I have just moved over the EQ2, and have little knowledge of the classes. I can often only play at non-peak times, or only for short busrts at a time, so expect that a lot of the time I will have to solo. I was wanting some advice about which classes are better at this. I am not realy wanting a mage or healer type, and so far was thinking of either monk, swashbuckler or ranger, but would appreciate advice and suggestions, as I am pretty confused

Thanks

Of the 3 you mentioned, Monks and Swashies will have an easier time soloing then a Ranger. Rangers are expensive to play as a first character - arrows and poisons will cost you.

Conjuror is the best solo class in the game.

Paladins can also make good solo characters. Heavy armor + large choice of weapons + healing makes for good solo play. In addition the Int line for Achievements boosts damage dealing ability for crusaders, making soloing even better. Honestly, a good case could be made for roughly 3/4 of the classes that they can solo well. The healers tend not to solo well, except perhaps Fury, because they don't generate enough damage. Guardians can solo (it did it for many levels) but it is slow. Bards suffer from low dps as well (despite recent attempts to boost it) and don't solo well either.

Zerkers are good solo from what I've started. As well as SKs... solo'd most of the way to about 55-60 til I really started grouping.

Thanks for the fast replies everyone. I think I will make a monk and swashie and play them both to 10 or so before deciding which one.

Just try a few different ones. Take them to the point where you're done with the noob quests; if you haven't come to like that char by then, then dump it. I'm pretty new, about 4 days, and this is what I've been doing. So far, Wizard wins by a country mile.

Conjurers are cool but in my experience they kill somewhat slowly. Also the pet controls and combat interaction can get down right annoying. If you dropped a Monk and Conj of the same level into an area and started a clock, after an hour the Monk would have a crapload more kills. Overall grind XP rate on a Monk (or scout class) is much higher.

The only thing really great about Conjurers and Necros is their ability to off much higher levels mobs. That can be great for completing a lot of quests.

Monk all the way for solo play though.

High base DPS. You don't need to click all over that place to kill something.

Feign Death (Best in the game) is on a couple of other classes but the Monks have the best success chance. Although say a Shadowknight is only 2% below a Monk in T7. Nothing will save you more time in game than Feign Death. Lets say you need a quest mob but they're only in large groups. If you can kill one single mob in the group before dying, you can feign death. You can wear down large groups that no other class could touch. The big time saver is that you never have to run away though. I'd bet money by the time you hit max level a Monk or other Feign Death class will outlevel any other class by about 5 levels because of the massive amount of time Feign Death saves.

You can have a pretty decent DPS, and you can also offhand tank or small group tank.

You get a built in INVIS that will save you a lot of time. INVIS + Feign Death can get you though nasty places when you're just trying to run in and pick something up (like a Legends and Lore book).

You look cool... spells are nice but for the shear coolness of spin kicking mobs to death, no one looks cooler than a monk (and no other weapon animation looks as good as a staff).

Safe Fall - Monks are one of the few classes that get safe fall. You can jump from 10 story building level highests w/o taking damage

Large Carry Capacity - My Wizard friend is always annoyed with my Monk. I cheaply bought all rosewood boxes (32 slot) for 6g each while he spent a plat and a half each on all Rare T7 bags (22 slot). He can only carry about 500 weight, while my Monk has something like 2500 weight capaciy. Long story short: You want to spend a few hours grinding mobs out in the feild without being forced to go home 'cause you've run out of bag room? Play a monk, not a weak [Removed for Content] scrawny Conjurer.

Like others have said ALL classes CAN solo all the way to 70, however certain classes are better at it then others, and "Better" is subjective. For exsample do you want to take down a creature that noramly requires a group of 6 to take down? Then your best bet is one of the Mage classes with Summoner(Conj/Necro) and Chanter(Illus/Coor) toping that list. However, if you want to not die or FD alot then you want to go Priest(all healers). As far as kill rate goes the Faster you kill the less safe it generally is to Kill something, for exsample a Monk/Bruiser is the highest DPSer of the Tank classes, however in order to Maximize there DPS not only do they cripple there ablity to take a hit, but they(atleast monks) accually damage themselfs(a small amount every few sec.) in order to increase there Haste(sugnificantly).

Also as far as Poisons go Niami Denmother has a great listing of both poisions and Potioins and how they stack over at eqtrader

Easy mobs, full off stance with dps gear. Blast them away 8 at a time. Hard mobs, defensive stance, survival gear. Blast them away 8 mobs at a time. Heroic mobs: Easy mobs, off stance, dps gear, blast away at one at a time, or, def stance, survival gear, blast away at 3-4 at a time. blue/white, def stance, [Removed for Content] good gear and stay alive until the mob is dead. Yellow, better be group mobs or you are in for a treat.
