Hi all, I am currently playing since 2 years on a non PVP EQ2 server and after a few reading of the PVP forum I feel like it could be a new adventure to start a toon on a PVP server. But ... yes there is a but ... I am considering myself as a very casual player, I am playing a few hours a week. So my question is; is that possible to have a casual playing style, having a social life AND also having fun on a PVP server ??? In advance, thank for your answers. Cataclypsa

as long as you dont take it too seriously, dont mind dying a lot and are willing to accept that you will be beaten by people with superior gear until you get some yourself it is fun.
ya I guess so. It would probably take u a bit to level up and I guess u could lock somewhere like 14 18 or around 24. Then its just basically looking for fights.

I am going to have to say Ssslick is right on this one. If you expect to play some PvE when you want to, and then play some PvP when you want to, then no. Because on a PvP server 100% of the PvE is either in an instance or preyed upon by PvP'ers. So, if you want to go out into Antonica or the Commonlands and do quests, just realize that you'll be killed over and over again by heavily twinked out groups of orange cons that will destroy you. So, PvE'ing happens behind the closed doors of instanced zones.

The other thing to realize is that 99% of the players on a PvP server aren't casual players, even if they don't play very often, they're very serious about the PvP aspect of it. Very few of the people you meet at any level will be in Treasured gear. Most start with a full set of Mastercrafted armor, then replace that with Legendary and Fabled when they can. Whenever someone see's a green con or blue con on track, they'll look to attack you, and about 90% of all PvP'ers are either Scouts with Tracking or in a group with a Scout that has Tracking. So, they will find the mismatch where you're the weaker party. Then if you engage a mob, they're certain to attack you. So, unless you're prepared to put forth the effort to make money and buy good gear (by harvesting or tradeskilling or using a higher level toon to farm loot), be prepared to die a LOT ... probably 75% of the time or more.

I don't say this to discourage you, quite the contrary. I'm saying this so that you know before you come that it will require laying the groundwork to twink out your PvP toon, otherwise you need to come with the attitude Ssslick mentioned, and just not care when you die over and over again. I look at it like golf ... just remember the good shots, not the frustratingly bad ones.

*Edited to change Eluzay to Ssslick.

I play socialy. By my self no guild, no raiding, taking everything at my own pase. Im sure you level even faster then me but I can say pvp is a great server for casual players...even more so then pve imo. Not only that but because pvp has its own rewards im extremely well equiped, equivalent to raid equiped on pve and only playing a few hours a day. About 2-4 hours a day and under 20 hours a week.

I've taken time off the game over and over again, its not that addictive. I rarely play more then 4 hours tops in one session and I easily take out more of the hard core players and sense any gear I have ive gotten completly solo without raiding and take on players who constantly raid and win you can easily hold your own in the end. As for maxing your character and skills that does take some time, I only have 39 AA heh...well I did get KoS when I was 50 so I suppose I missed out on alot.

And there arn't twinks at 70 simply because you don't level any more and you build armor in the end. Plus itemization in T7 is really easy.

I started playing as soon as the pvp server came live. And played alot more when it came live like anyone would play with something new and fun but ive taken entire months intervals without playing and weeks where i've logged on maybe once. And even then not doing much but talking to people. I havn't logged on today or checked my play time in awhile, so when did you start playing, your level and play time? Its easy to be a casual player, even easier once you reach T7.

Cataclypsa

Yes it's possible, provided you come into it with the appropriate expectations.

First define what your expectations are for PvP. If you've been reading the PvP forums, then you hopefully have a good grasp on what PvP in EQ2 is like and aren't looking at it through rose-colored glasses. There used to be a good post around here called the "Laws of the Jungle" (or something like that). It pretty bluntly laid out the basics of PvP, and if you can find it I recommend giving it a glance or two.

Choose your server carefully. I'll be honest, I chose Vox - the Exchange server - because I am a casual player with disposable income and I wanted to be able to play the game and PvP without having to work in it. That's the server that ultimately worked best for me and it's the only one I play on now. Venekor is the RP/PvP server. Nagafen is the PvP server and is also the most populated one. Pick the one that works best for you.

Decide if you want to play solo or if you would prefer being part of a group. Also decide what your progression in the game is going to be like. You've had two years to experience the PvE game, and now you want to experience PvP - do you want to spend your time in-game grinding, questing, etc., or do you want to PvP? If it's the latter, then I recommend disabling your combat experience in early levels so you can maximize your pvp abilities (referred to erroneously as "level-locking".) Slowing your XP progression will enable you to build your character at a pace you are comfortable with as a casual player. You'll be able to acquire gear, status, faction, skill upgrades, etc. without feeling the overwhelming "rush" to get to the next level.

Expect to die - a lot. Expect to get ganked, griefed, camped, taunted. Expect to get frustrated to the point of shutting off the computer and walking away. And when it happens, take a break, count to 10, take a few deep breaths and remind yourself that it's just a game. And then when you're ready, jump back in. And pick the class you want to play - not the one you heard was "best" for PvP. You will ultimately have more fun in the long run.

All of the servers are looking for new players to recruit from the PvE servers so I'll make my pitch for Vox. If you wanted to try out PvP there and are willing to roll a Freeport toon, I'd be happy to help you get started. There are plenty of players in the lower levels for you to group up with and PvE or PvP with, and lots of people willing to give a new PvP'er a helping hand. You can look for me there as Tari.
