I thought I would put this little list together while at work, it seems a lot of people are lacking knowledge of the basics of PvP, so I thought it would be a good idea to list some of the basic things that I could think of.

Sorry if it seems a little fragmented, I am jotting down ideas as I think of them.

Of course, I am bound to miss out on lots, so I'm sure you'll point out what I have missed!

If I have made any errors, I'm sure you'll point that out too.

Ok, first things first. You do not become PvP enabled until you hit level 10. Up until this point, the only death you'll take is if you get killed by a mob or NPC.

PvP enabled players will have a red "aggro" line around their name if they are of the opposite alignment. Exile players will have "the Exiled" tag after their name, these guys can be attacked by anybody of any level. Players that you can attack (and can attack you!) will con to you, just like a mob, so white would be even con to you (same level), blue would be a level or 2 below you, yellow, a level or 2 above you etc.

You will be informed of the level range for PvP whenever you zone / log-in.

A death in PvP will result in loss of a percentage of coin that you have on you. As I understand it, the coin loss is between 50 -75%, although I could be wrong here.

Rule 1... Don't forget to bank. This is also rule 2 and 3!

You can also lose an item, but you will not lose legendary/fabled items. I looted a Lore item yesterday, so I know they can be looted!

You can also lose infamy/fame if you get killed by another player.

If you get killed by the same person within 30 minutes, you will lose no coin, items or fame / infamy.

/pvp - shows the amount of kills and deaths you have achieved in PvP

/recent - shows who you have killed in the last 30 minutes.

/who - shows the list of people in the zone of your alignment. Handy for scouts so you can sift out who is on your side.

Go to Options / Controls / Targeting keys and assign a key to the "Select Next Hostile PVP". Very useful, kinda speaks for itself. I have assigned a button on my mouse to this, and also the Q key

If you attack somebody and then try to fly, you will discover that you cannot. However, if you are attacked and do not attack back, you will be able to use the griffon tower.

You will die. A lot. Get over that, and get on with having some fun. There is a steep learning curve if you have never played this game before, even more so on the PvP servers.

Killing others will result in you gaining faction with The Lucanic Knights if you are from Freeport or The Royal Antonican Guard if you are from Qeynos. Raising this faction will eventually enable you to purchase PvP equipment from merchants in North Freeport. I am pure evil; somebody will have to tell you where to purchase this gear if you are a servant of Queen Antonia.

I can't think of anything else right now, I'll maybe add some more later.

Oh, don't forget to have some fun.

And don't forget to bank

Don't forget /target name thats very big seeing how that rendering seems to be an issue on servers. If you have track or have ever used it anyone that shows up as a con color means there in range for you to use /target name. Even if you cant target them because your rendering slow you can use that and still target them before they show up. This also works good if there to far away on your screen or behind something.

As soon as you make your character, go Anonymous so people can't know what class or level you are when they search unless you're looking for a group. Roleplaying also works. To go Anonymous just type /anon

You can also use the following command to find out who can hit you in the zone. /pvp_range

Have your scout keep his/her Tracking window up at all times and keep it on "PC Only" because the people that will come close to you on a PvP server are the ones that want to kill you and think they can. If you're new and geared out in mostly Treasured gear, they're right.

Make sure your scout uses totems. See Invisibility is helpful, but he needs to keep See Stealth totems up at all times.

If you want to do PvE content, look for instanced zones. If you must PvE out in a normal zone, at least ask a scout nearby to mention to you when he sees a Q/FP'er ... you might get lucky and he'll tell you.

Always monitor the /shout and /yell channels because people announce pvp'ers there quite often.

If you decide to join Nagafen, just give up on solo'ing until you're comfortable with the PvP environment. As the OP said, the learning curve is steep, and solo'ers will be ganked by everyone in the zone.

Don't take it personally ... we all die, and this isn't the only character you'll ever play, so just accept the deaths and treat it like golf ... only remember the good shots. At the same time, try to learn as much as you can with your first character as you level up. Inevitably you'll roll an alt and he's the one that will benefit greatly from what you've learned with your first character.

Only harvest on a character you don't care much about, or in instances. Harvesting is a big flourescent flag saying "Please Gank Me Now!" ... and people will.

When you decide that everything is too expensive, which may be quite soon, concentrate on leveling up one tradeskiller, or having one harvester to make money ... a harvester is gonna die a lot tho, so realize that.

Make friends ... everyone is stronger with friends both on the battle field, in the tradeskill instances when you need gear/spells, and on Ventrilo/TeamSpeak, so enjoy it.

It is possible to loot fabled items, I've seen people lose Masters. Currently I believe you can drop anything that is not attuned, notrade items are droppable, a guild mate of mine drop a Wrap of Fay Preservation [NO-TRADE] Quest item. You only lose infamy / fame from someone that is your PvP title, one below, and one above you. PvP titles are: Hunter Slayer Destroyer Champion Dreadnaught General Master Overseer Oh yeah, DON'T FORGET TO BANK!

Tips for Trackers:

Make hotkeys with what ever suits you, but alerts your group to an opponent, or something on track. I have mine by Con, or unknown. By the time you type you have something on track, its con, and ask them to follow you, well, a lot can happen in thoes few moments. Plus, its just easier to click a button.

Light blue name on track, and dont know its origin or con yet?

/ name is the same as /who name. And in addition, you dont need the entire name. Example: You have the name Garfield on track. Simply type / gar (notice there is a space between / and gar) and you will get a report back of all names with "gar" in it. So if you get a list like this: Mangare or Domgare but the name Garfield does not show up, its an enemy.

Find the con before your track does. Ever notice thoes Colored orbs at the top of your track bar. Well not only can you filter what con's you track (exclude greys or reds etc) but you can also use thoes to find the con of a target before your track even does. Click the con colors at the top of your screen off and on to see if the name in your track window disapears. If you click Yellow off, and the name disapears, you just found out the con.

Always leave your track on before you engage. Too many people use the track feature to track down their victim and then engage without turning track back on. Once engaged, you cannot track, so turn it on before you engage/or fly on griffs.

Use your map to find your target, the "path" isnt always right. Open your map and you will see an X. That is a more accurate location of your target.

Refresh your track often, it can be buggy while tracking.

If you see something and then its gone, dont assume its gone for good.

Totems are great, but see items are more cost effective. Also you can loose totems to your opponents if your killed and you need lots of inventory space to hold them. See stealth and invis items are worth their weight in plat and then some. Get some and get em early (useable by lvl 12).

With the addition of the new macro system, I would recommend that if you duo with the same person a lot (or if you team with the same people a lot), make some macros just for them. For example, I team a lot with *player a*, so I have a macro that targets them, heals them and then goes to previous target. Just one example, but the new macro system makes it a lot easier to have some good macros. Well worth playing around with. edit for typo

I got a lucanic knight thing from a level 30, I cant use it but when he died it dropped I have it in my bank. I didn't think it was possible to loose one of those things. I guess he should have used it. So if you get a badge thinging use it or bank it.Greenion wrote:

as far as i understand only non attuned treasured quality items (and below) are droppable as pvp loot. I never lost it, nor have I heard of a story where a master was lost to a pk. Hmmm, here's another hint I just thought of... When in a team, decide on who will be in charge.... and then OBEY them. If the leader makes a bad decision, throw popcorn at them and then move on to the next bit of fun. I try not to join pick-up groups any more if I can help it, but when necessary, it is VITAL that a leader is established. If you have played this game for a while, it is probably a good idea to become the leader. You'll soon find that if you take contol, people will listen and then you will have more fun. Leading or being led is the key. Doing your own thing in a group = you are a tool and shold be made to clean goblins boots.

This can only be emphasised! I have 2 pvp toons right now, a healer and an assassin. The healer pretty much always follows, it allows me to concentrate on his role properly. He will lead if the others are noobs tho and I expect people to go with it. The assassin is 99% paired with a brigand wherever they go and the brigand has better track etc so the brigand leads. I follow and worry about if it was right afterwards.

I actually counted once and of failed groups (break up within 30 minutes or so due to constant deaths and arguments) almost all were caused by two players thinking they were the leader.

If you are not /anon or /role, the old lfg window will show your level and current zone. If you are one of those with a higher title, showing up on serverwide searches makes everyone go for you, prolly whole groups of them. How to tell what class someone is no matter if their solo, grouped, or anon/rpLook for self buffs. If you dont know which classes have what self-buffs, roll a couple different classes and play them for about 10-15 lvls or go to alakazam and look up each classes spell lists. Remember to look for buffs with yellow backgrounds first, yellow is the background that most self buff icons are given. The really hard ones to tell are when they're exiled and if their relitively low lvl or if they're a druid. Basically in these cases you gotta take your best guess and hope you're right.
