I respeced to shield ally just for something different.

Question:

1.) Do I need a shield for this to work? (assuming I don't because it doesnt say it needs one in description.)

2.) How do I tell this is working? I don't see anything in chat boxes saying its doing anything.

Yes you need a shield for it to work you also need to be within 25 meters and also to face the target you are protecting.

You see it working in logs by the text xxx but YOU blocks.

I just have reset this ability. I had a 60% chance and a 30% avoidance after doing some parsing it seem like this gives a 2,5-3,5% chance against epics (ex labs lycs etc) and a 4-8% chance in places as Crypts OOB MMC HOF etc.

I feel that those 8 points wasn't really worth spending for that 2-3% chance witch is sad I really like the idea behind shield alley.

/Tash

That kinda sucks. I don't use a shield.

Oh well I guess I will spec back to intel line again. I miss my faster cast times.

If you are in the MT group on a raid I would look to picking up a decent buckler. I usually get between 3-5 blocks in on an epic fight accounting for anything between 6-12k worth of damage saved. The additional heal crits only account for around 4k and there is no gaurantee that the crits dont go off while the MT is at or near 100% making them worthless (I dropped the heal crits and kept the casting speed). In addition the blocks are calculated before any heals so you are saving cleric and shaman heal procs. Note these are guestimate values based on parses from Labs.

There used to be a few threads discussing this quite extensively (not sure if they have been uploaded with the forum changes). If they are still here its worth a look, there is some interesting discussion between the heal crit bonus and the shield ally option for a MT templar.

Lose my crits? I don't think so.

01:41:47 Kizee | Healed 2425615 | HPS 369.53 // HCrits 2900 / Dmg Taken 185501 (zonewide parse from when we were learning the 3rd and 4th named in FTH)

Thanks for the replies. I will probally do alittle bit more testing but I will probally go back to the intell line again tho.

Aye, every time I say that every Templar looks at me as if Im mad . You dont actually lose your crits though, just get fewer. Every time I have checked this on the parser I guestimate that the shield ally is equal or superior to the crits. The main problem is that it is guestimates - you dont really know what the mob is going to hit for on each attack (though you can take an average) and you dont really know what the equivalent number of effective heal crits you would have had in that same time period. I guess it is really a judgement call by each Templar as to what they think works better.

I just know I won't see many other players with the "Protector" title out there, so I'm amused by that alone.

I am surprised at the amount of blocks you seem to be able to do. In labs against namedsI be happy if I even got out one even more if I managed to get of 2. As I said In labs I have a average for about 2,5 -3,5%. Very curious about stats and equipment to manage to get 3-5. Actually I don't have castline speed either but have maxed healcrits, dps and melee crits. (This helps me a lot while solo duo or in groups) In raids I seem to do very good anyway.

/Tash

Couple of examples from labs, Ive had to write them as I dont know how to copy and paste from ACT (great prog btw Ad).

Uncaged Alzid

1:22:45 PM: Jedia : Strike of the Massive: slashing: YOU block - saving @750 damage

1:22:48 PM: Jedia: slash: slashing: YOU block - saving @2000 damage

1:24:05 PM: Jedia: slash: slashing: YOU block - saving @2000 damage

1:24:03 PM: Jedia: freeze: cold: YOU block (Mutagenic Discordant) - saving @500 damage

Total damage saved = @5k

33/228 heal crits, 12 of which were on supplicants prayer giving around 1500 worth of extra heals, the remainder were on mark of nobility (or similar) giving a negligible heal increase (call it 500). Total healed via crits was around 2k at 15% crit chance. If I had the additional 10% from the AA line I would guestimate it would be nearer 4k, still well below the damage saved by blocking.

Zatrack

3:05:17 PM: Jedia: slash: slashing: YOU block (Doomsworn adept) - saving @1500 damage

3:05:24 PM: Jedia: slash: slashing: YOU block (Doomsworn adept) - saving @1500 damage

3:06:36 PM Jedia: slash: slashing: YOU block (Doomsworn adept) - saving @1500 damage

Total damage saved = @4k

22/204 heal crits, 5 of which were on supplicants prayer giving around 700 additional healing. Again, the remainder were on things like Mark of nobility or blessing of anashanti sul adding only 30 or so per crit (call it an additional 700). So the total from crits was around 1.5k, again if we doubled that assuming I had the additional 10% heal crit it would only be 3k. Well below the blocks.

All damage estimates are averages (+/-30%). I know this is pseudo stats but its the best I can do without sitting doing maths on SigmaStat or something.

Im kind of rushing to get this finished before I head to work, but these are fairly average parses for me. Im sure I could pull out plenty more. In addition Im only carrying the Wardens Aegis, I believe a better shield will give a better proc rate so you could argue the shield block figures could be much higher. Comments welcome - if Im wrong I would love to know!

If you have invol cure crit for 300 on a mob AOE and it hits 24 people you are already way ahead of the low block rates from this AA.

"If you have invol cure crit for 300 on a mob AOE and it hits 24 people you are already way ahead of the low block rates from this AA."

Ack, yes you are correct, I hadnt thought of that. I will have a think about that, though my first thought is that the actual pseudo-stats above are still accurate for the main tank, just innacurate for the raid as a whole. I would rather be removing damage from the main tank in excess of the crit heals than be worrying too much about the crits on procs that heal the entire raid.

PS - anyone know where the quote function has got to?

If you don't commit to Shield Ally, you won't really get results. By committing, I mean using the best protection shield you can get your hands on, ignoring all other stats... and maybe if you have the resources getting the 3 +block adornments. A 655 protection shield gets me 8.6% blocking. I haven't spent the money yet, but in beta the +block adornments added 1.0-1.2% blocking each. So at maximum you'll get almost 12% blocking... 60% you can give to your target. With just the shield, you should block ~5% for your target verses L70 epics... but good luck finding those... so less than that verses say 72 epics. Get all the adornments, and you might get ~7% verses L70. As a poster said above... any time I do the math, the theoretical results are that I block much more damage than crit-healing gives.
