I started a swashie awhile back but gave up pretty quick. I couldn't understand how so many of our combat abilities were tied to where we were standing in relation to the mob. We had to be behind it or next to it. When in combat everytime i tried to get onto its side, it just turned towards me. Are those type of skills rellying on being able to knock the mob down? or is it a one time use when you first hit the mob or only really usable in a group?

How do you all pull this off?

soloing in the early levels can be hard but normally i just use the frontal attack that lowers parry, then my other attacks that dont need to be in back then cheap shot and try to get them off.

My swashie is 56 and has only 4 positional attacks: the master strike which I think is behind only, 1 from behind, 1 from behind or flanking, 1 from in front or flanking. Some other scouts have more. So three atttack that need some thought to use solo, but they can be used. Against any mob that can not see through stealth your second attack should be one of these. Our stealth attack includes a stun so if you position youself behind the mob you can get at least one, often more rear attacks off before the mobs turns around to let you make your frontal attack. Many solo mobs will be nearly dead by then. Another way to use them is to use Cheapshot to stun the mob run through them and use the rear attack. Don't waste time by trying to go around or turning to face them, that will be done automatically. Thirdly there is an ability you can get from an achievement that forces the mob to turn around long enough to make one or two attacks. I have it because it is fun, and I solo a lot.

Assassin and Brigand require position the most.

The best combo to start out with a swashy is to use the stealth attack, then the rear-only, then the rear/flank, then start the HO, Cheapshot to stun the mob even more, then finish up your HO with a normal attack. Between our Mez, walk the plank and the "into-stealth" attack we can get back into this sequence any time we want, as long as the recast timers have expired.

Give Swashy a try again, once you know how to play them they are an extremely well rounded class.

yeah we only have 4 positional attacks that are semi-hard to hit while soloing, try combinations of cheapshot, swathe aoe, or the mez and sneak and open up with the flanking stun and hit other CAs

Sneak attack is a useful way to get behind your enemy.

But then, I have my sneak focus maxed...helps a lot.
