I apologize if this topic/question has been done to death, but I can't seem to find an answer in any of the forums. I just installed Windows Vista and re-installed EQ2, but for some reason the updater will not initialize. I don't get any warning from Windows saying it's been blocked, and I've already tried disabling the firewall altogether. The error tells me to retry initializing and I just get the same error every time.

Run it as Adminstrator!

Can't take credit for this but it worked for me:

anyway, on to the *fix*. keep in mind that this helps the MAJORITY of the people, but it may not help everyone with vista. first, locate the following files. LP_plugin.exe EQ2.exe EverQuest2.exe then for each one, right click them and then choose properties. from there you should see a button to "run as administrator" or something similar, i am not at my vista machine, so i cant remember exactly. in that window, look down it, and a little ways down, you will see a checkbox that does the same thing, but when checked, it runs each time the app is run and does not require you to do it each time it is run. also, there is a checkbox for the compatibility options. check that checkbox, and then make sure it is set to windows xp SP2 in the drop down just underneath it. it defaults to xp SP2, but i am just covering all the bases. then, if there is a button at the bottom of the window that says "apply" click it, then click ok. if there is no "apply" button, then just click ok. now, when you run from the shortcut on the desktop, you do not need to set it to run as admin every time you start it, and you should not have the LP_plugin error any longer either. also, it is a good idea to right click the station and EQ2 folders under sony in Program Files, and make sure the folder permissions for read-only is not checked. this will allow the patcher and the launcher to write patches to the folders if patches need to be done.

I have almost the same problem. Bought a new computer with Vista and now the patcher wont download the updates. I have tried everything Windrider sugggested, still wont work. I was on the phone with tech support for half hour. They couldn't help me. Is anyone having any luck with Vista?? I'm stuck with a $1000 computer that I cant even play my favorite game on. Question is, do I take the computer back or wait it out? Very frustrating! reformat and install xp, vista is crap. unless you like other people to control your computer. if you really want to keep vista, though it offers no advantages, you can always go to the sony folder properties, add the user everyone to it and give them full rights to the folder, essentially making it completely open to an changes by anyone logged in to your computer. security hole but worked for me (i dual boot vista to learn it for tech support job). have fun

Thanks for your responses. I can play now! I cant say which change made the difference but I can narrow it down to 2. I went into my system and disabled the stupid system administration option. Couldn't stand those stupid pop-ups asking my permission to do everything! Next I noticed that I still had windows malware thingy still turned on. So I disabled that. Went to bed, the next morning the patcher downloaded just fine. So one of those 2 steps worked (or else a computer nerd broke into my house in the middle of the night and fixed everything) either way I'm thrilled!

I was having this same problem with my new laptop. The solution in short easy terms was this:

Go to the control Panel ----> User Accounts -------> Then there is the option Turn User Account Control on or off

Turn that off and you can patch just fine.

Thanks to all who posted suggestions that got me headed this way.
