I just bought EQ2, and am trying to figure out what to play. I'm curious about all the forms I keep seeing Illusionists in. What are all the forms you can take, what do they do, and how do you get them? Can Illusionists solo? I'm not talking about crazy big super boss soloing or anything, just doing their quests and hunting normal baddies at their level solo. Can Illusionists enchant stuff? And if so, what is a good trade skill for them? Thanks!

Lots of classes get illusion forms. Some illusion forms can be cast by any class if they have completed the appropriate quest. Illusionists can solo very well, but takes some strategizing and a cool head. Coercers are the evil version of Illusionist. Coercers "enchant" mobs to be used as their pet. Illusionists cast their own pet. Both can mesmerize or put mobs to sleep for a period of time. Illusionist is a very fun class, but probably helps to be an experienced game player that sorta knows how things work.

If you are talking *forms* like stances in vanguard or other games... no we don't. Our illusionst don't do anything except make us bald.. not even a faciton modifier. Other classes get cooler illusions than we do. You can get an item for every illusion we have too. It sucks.

If you are talking about enchant items like in EQ1 enchanting metals for crafting.. we don't do any of that stuff either.

Basically we buff and do damage and maybe once a week have to mez something.

We solo just fine.

No illusion in the game affects the game in any way. Other classes have illusions too, and some are quite striking. Ours are pretty bland. The only use they have is to make you smaller (to run around in dungeons easier) or larger (to see over your groupmembers). Illusionits can change into gnolls, dwarves, half-elves, humans, and barbarians. We can change our groupmates into all of those except barbarian and dwarf.

Can illusionists solo? Hehe, yes. We can solo very well. We can solo the crazy big super boss and also normal baddies for easy quests. We are probably the best soloers in the game in terms of killing hard thing.

There is no "enchant stuff" in this game like there was in EQ1. The closest we have is the transmuting tradeskill that anyone can do. Good trade skills would be; tailor - to make your own armor, sage - to make your own spells.

No illusion in the game affects the game in any way.

Not true,

Druid's cat/wolf and Shaman's black smoke/bear illusions are self buffs that have other bonuses. Necro's also get an illusion that is part of a buff. While the majority of illusions are simply fluff spells some of them do actually have an effect.

Those you refer to are buffs that come with a shape shift component, and obviously have an effect. None of those are illusions that can be cast on others, nor do they change the appearance of anyone else. Illusionists really should get illusions that do something, even if it is small. They should at least affect faction, and maybe even grant the target some of the racial trait bonuses of the illusion.

ooh illusion fae, with illusion wings, jump off that high place and wow you still go splat! now that would be fun...

I agree in eq1 the illusions did buffs for you and your group only some on group though, its pretty sad they dont do anything in eq2 thats just not right what so ever.
