First of all, is this the wrong character to start with? I hear it can be harder, but I wanted a challenge.

I am soloing now, but will be with a group later. I am only a lever 17 and doing ok. Several people have told me that for soloing, the necro and other pet characters are much easier to use.

I do like my Coercer and want to continue him, but should I start with an "easier" class first? Will it get easier with my Coercer over time?

Any tips or help you could give me would be great. I am sure this gets asked a lot, but I want any help people are willing to share.

If you are having fun with the Coercer does it matter that another class can do something better?

Very very true statement. I was only concerned that it may be "too hard" for a beginner like me.

But, I am not going to quit. Most characters don't "shine" until later levels (I bet).

And, he is fun to play. And different. That is what really matters.

The coercer can be a very difficult class to play until you develop rhythms and patterns that work for you and get a feel for the large variety of spells we need to juggle. Situational awareness and quick reaction times are critical. You will sometimes have problems finding groups because inexperienced players don't understand what a coercer is and what a difference we can make. If you are enjoying playing a coercer, run with it and don't worry about what anyone else says.

I started this game with a coercer because I read it was not played much and is hard to play. I like a challenge and I like to be a class which is uncommon to see. The first 23 levels where indeed quite hard and I died a lot. Maybe because I was new at the game, but probably because i died fast to simple things and also because I'm on a pvp server. Then at lvl 23 I got the first reactive and things got easier.

Now at 48, I've learned a lot about the coercer by just playing it. It's the only way, trying and dying. Now I rarely die, I am quite good at pvp and I'm having a [Removed for Content] of fun with master dominate! I kill yellow and orange in matter of seconds and blue ^^^ heroics are no problem with the right pet. (if non coecers read this, it's not true, don't roll coercers we suck and we don't need any more coercers)

My point, stick with it and you will be rewarded!

Also when you get master charm, i'm pretty sure that coercer is the best solo class in the game, although i must say i never played a necro.

This is actually my first post and can't say it enough: COERCER FTW!!

Anyone new to the game should roll a dwarf/barbarian paladin as thier first character. Then join a family guild, mooch mastercrafted armor, but don't ever upgrade your taunts. I don't know why you should do this, it just seems like that is in fact what most new players do.

As for coercers, if you didn't buy your character off ebay and you play it from 1-70 without powerleveling, you should be ok. It isn't difficult, it just takes a little more practice than some other characters.

Personally for your first toon I would recommend playing a basic toon to learn the dynamics of the game and interface first. I generally do this with a melee type and once you have the basics down then move to the harder class. Sure you can do it starting with coercer but are the problems your having related to your being new to the game or new to the class. You wont be able to pick that out as easy starting on a coercer. I should say I find melee to be a bore and is easy for me so learning from them is a no brainer for me. If your new you can get by with just swinging the sword and testing stuff out but you cant with a caster you must be more hands on and that can interfere with basics learning. By level 20 you should have a good grasp of the dynamics of the game and then move to what you really want to play.

I cannot agree with Melodar post more. Learning to play a Coercer well can be complex and challaging. I spent 2 years playing melee classes (70 Zerker/Assassin and 57 Bruiser) and then rolled a Coercer on pvp. At first I wasn't sure about this class and struggled solo'ing pve and pvp. But now at 55.. omg.. there is no question my Coercer would own my fighers and scout. I'll say this one thing quick and hide it in my post so it doesn't get amplified and well known.... there is no better solo pve or pvp'er then a coercer... period. You can beat any class within 10 lvls the majority of the time.. few resists and your in trouble, but master up and it's all over. Back to the post at hand.... The fact that I know well what other classes can, can't and will do is a major skill to have as a coercer. There are two types of coercers... One that kind of knows the class and just considers himself cc and power battery.... and One that knows his and other classes inside and out and owns all! Here is a funny and common situation... exp group rolling... group all wipe but one. Coercer says, "You forgot to cast rez item.. get back when you can, I'll just keep pulling." haha.. love it!

Enjoy,

Exur
