View Full Version : So EoF set gear - why not molds?

For all the whining about labs relic trash runs, the armor mold system seems a tested and successful one. It means guilds are faced with comparatively few drops that are wasted, and it's faster to gear up a new recruit.

EoF seems a step back, in that we've got armor that's suited to 1/24 classes, in zones with a 3-4 day lockout, that drop 2 pieces at most, and only from named.

It doesn't seem a massive problem at the moment, because guilds have only just started clearing these zones and getting drops, so odds are all the pieces are needed. But we've transmuted two drops already.

I can only imagine 6 months down the line, when 90% of people have the drops, and a few poor unlucky souls simply have to watch the wrong drops get transmuted over and over again. That's assuming they can still find enough people motivated to grind these zones, when most of them already have the drop they need.

And then there's the penalty for guilds with more than 1 member of each class. Particularly since most guilds that can do this content operate a DKP system; if you're the only Templar, for example, each piece will cost you 1 DKP. If there are two Templars in the guild, then expect a few hundred points bidding war, and to ultimately take 12 months instead of 6 to get a set. Thus the folks who already have an advantage in not having to share their class drops also gain a massive DKP edge which they can use to buy up all the other drops.

I think what I probably hate most is the dumb luck with this system. With relic, you could save DKP, and know it would typically only take a few weeks for the right piece to drop. Now, with a 1/24 chance, it's taken away from the guilds distribution system to decide who gets class armor, and put down to the random number generator. It's a virtual certainty with those odds some people will have to clear raid zones over 100 times to get their drop. This just seems wrong.

Maybe they didnt want it to be super easy to gear up, the faster people get geared out, the faster people get bored and want to quit, they have to make something difficult to keep the hardcore players around.

holypaladin(random number) you are idiot... you didnt noticed that he is speaking about FABLED profession set not LEGENDARY set???And returning to OP yes its step back to us... but not for soe they just increased time sink and (boredom aspect)... still there are some other raid worthy equipment that is easier to get

Message Edited by Arleonenis on 01-22-2007 05:56 AM

I agree that they should have used molds because I am getting sick of seeing the fabled class armor get transmuted because we don't have that class in raid. We have only gotten 2 pieces so far that anybody could use....go go RNG.

Either put molds in or put some code in that will not let anything drop that the raid doesnt have in it.

Message Edited by Kizee on 01-22-2007 07:33 AM
I think the reason why they chose not molds is because of the way they were setting it up. Certain named would drop certain classes drops. However the problem comes in the fact that due to random nameds in EH you don't always get the right amount which causes is lull of certain class armor entering the world, while other classes have loads of gear dropping for them.

We now have everyone park alt's outside the doors because we get the same drops each time. Pretty soon we will run out of alts and switch to transmuting...

Would be nice if their tables were a bit bigger.

I'm talking about the fabled sets as others have pointed out.

I'm not in any way suggesting they make it easier in terms of what you have to kill - in fact I agree some of the drops are off mobs that are too easy (i.e. MMIS first named).

What I am suggesting, is that every time your 24-person raid kills this named (on a 4 day lockout), it shouldn't go completely to the roll of a dice to determine who gets their set piece, or if we just get another bit of fabled transmuted.

It's not even so much that it's a grind; I'd prefer it if the same named only had a % chance of dropping a mold rather than a 100% chance of set gear. It's that aquiring the best items in the game takes between one week and a year, depending entirely on luck. And to me, that's simply not right.

I agree with you, the armor molds are 100X's better simply b/c of the rot rate of the new type being class specific.

So let me see if I have this straight, you do want molds for fabled set gear but not for legendary set gear?

Planes of Power handled this issue perfectly; molds of different slots dropped in different zones off of different named, reserving the better pieces (Legs, Breastplate, Shoulders) for far ahead in progression (or very rare off of the earlier progression, ie: Legs, Shoulders). The cost for each was actually significant also, depending upon your server. But then again, that expansion alone for EQL had what, 30 raids?

Just because its "set gear" and not just any gear, all of a sudden theres a problem with it. Might as well make cheldrak drop a weapon mold instead of randomly dropping a mage dagger or one of 2 1h swords, so those never get wasted either.

Seriously, [expletive haxx0red by Raijinn].

Typically half the raid can use something. It's very rare, even though we've killed him countless times, that something rots. Okay, so you might not get exactly what you want from him, but at the very least someone gets a piece of resist gear or backup.

Yes, it is because it's "set gear". Not because of the name or the shiny graphic, but because such "set gear":

Is usable by only 1 out of 24 classes

Drops only from named in raid instances with a 4 day lockout and that require a full raid force

Requires you collect multiple pieces to gain any real benefit over your existing armor

Because of the class limitation, there's no offloading a bit of unwanted chain armor with a damage proc to a tank for when he's DPSing, or some leather to a shaman who could use it for resists. It's a lucky coincidence they introduced transmuting or we'd be sorely tempted to auction the pieces off in a trade channel to the highest bidder and load the guild bank with plat. We've transmuted a server first of the best gear in the game. Where's the logic in that?

I agree that EQ1's Planes of Power got the armor mold implementation pretty much spot on. It's strange that after EQ1 realised what a good idea a mold system is, and implemented it over several expansions (with EQ2 subsequently adopting it for KoS), that we're now back to square one. Actually, further back than square one, because EQ1 didn't have 24 classes all having to rely on the random number generator.

The rot rate on this stuff is pretty annoying. Half the legs and BP of wuoshi/mayong go to alts...Someone explain this to me:Why do some poeple get their forearms off an extremely easy named (the second in freethinkers - a tier2 eof zone), while some poeple get their forearms off the 3rd floor of Emerald Halls with a longer lockout?Seriously, if anyone can make sense of that, go right ahead.
