View Full Version : Nek Forest Mob scarcity

I've been doing a lot of quests in Nek Forest with a bunch of my characters. Some problems I've noticed with Mob existance or scarcity:1) Mist Grinnins. These used to be common. I know of one spawn point for a single Mist grinnin on the side of the river. Since several quests use these, to me, more should be added. There are plenty of Guardian Mist Grinnins or Mist Grinnin Savages, but like I said, after an hour, I've gotten 3 single Mist Grinnins to pop, and 2 of them didnt update my quest.2) Nerius Vandals. Out of the 3 nerius camps, there is a chance that one will spawn in each camp by itself initially. Its not always there. The only other way to get them to spawn is by hoping the ring event pops the Nerius Scallywag after you kill the Nerius Scoundrel ring event. Again, its fairly rare to get the Scallywag to pop. With the Scallywag are 4 vandals, and its a pretty tough fight, especially for the level that AQ5 is designed for, as well as the SOLO writ that has you get vandals.3) Sullian Fairies. Wow, these used to be plentiful around bone lake. Now I've counted 2 different Sullian Partisans - those are the only "Sullian" mobs in the whole zone. Again, why should it be so tough to just find a single solo mob?Maybe these were all moved elsewhere, but I've been scouting most of the areas all day and certainly haven't come across any of these.agressiv³

Message Edited by agressiv3 on 12-17-2006 07:44 PM

Do you use the EQ2Map add-on?I think it is most helpful for finding rare spawns.

I find I'm kinda in the same boat as you - I came from spending 2 years playing WoW, and the idea of camping for a mob seems odd to me, but I deal with it by looking for the mob then moving on if its not there - the good thing about this game (as opposed to WoW) is that there are so many quests to do.

Yep, been using eq2map for a while. Unfortunately with zones such as Nek Forest it can get messy just because of the sheer amount of quests. Things tend to not get cleaned up, but we can only blame ourselves. In any case though, I literally scoured the whole zone, so unless somehow I missed something, i dont know where any of these mobs are hiding agressiv³

The mist grinins share spawn with the ghostly bubbles (can't remember their names) along the river.

The faires by the lake share spawn with the ghostly bubbles (can't remember their names) around the lake.

I believe the vandals share spawn with the other Nerius stuff in all three camps, keep clearing the camps (all three) and you should get the vandals

Jardon, Level 70 Guardian, Antonia Bayle

OK, I finally did these two quests last night, surprusingly without much difficulty.

The mist grinnins *don't* spawn where EQ2map says they spawn - rather they spawn on *both* sides of the river, with only one or two on the Eastern bank where EQ2map says they are. There are a lot of them intermingled with the River Stone Golems on the *Western* Bank, near that short-cut tunnel that takes you to the Gulthex Citadel area.

As for the Fairies, your best bet is to do a few circuits of Bone Lake at night, concentrating on the Eastern, Southeastern and Southern banks of the lake, and following the river south a little but until you come to the edge of the Forgotten Woods. There are normally around 4/5 fairies per circuit, with an additional number of corrupters, which I think are placeholders.

The best trick I've found to getting them is to spam your Tab key whilst running through an area, and it will pick up mobs that aren't in visual range yet.

I did the Frostfell quest last night to hunt mist grinnin. Found 3 solo on the east side of the riverbank and then 1 on the west side, north of the heroic spawns. Had to loop around and kill one more on the east side to finish the quest. I saw some fairies around Bone Lake, don't remember how many there were, not many, 5ish or so? Both mobs definitely require you to wait for a respawn after wiping them out.

Camping - A stupid, frustrating, boring, and time consuming quest design. This shows complete lack of imagination to me. Quests don't have to be designed with camping involved. WoW is proof of that. I never camped a mob more than 60 seconds in WoW. There are other ways to make a quest 'challenging' and/or time consuming. I recently re-upped my EQ2 acct and I got to do my AQ 5 where I had to kill 5-10 'Deathbloom Treants'. Turns out there were only 2 of them in the whole of Nektulos Forest. I almost unsubbed again that night. It took us many hours of camping to get the rest of them to spawn. Then we too, had to get Nerius Vandals. Not fun.

2. Copying characters to the test server(s) - What is up with this? If you want to get your new stuff tested, you've got to have people to test it. Again, a completely indefensible position. WoW allows character copies to the test server and there doesn't seem to be any problem with it.

Other than that, I agree. I think about getting to the next level a lot less in EQ2 than I did in WoW. There wasn't enough group content in WoW to level through. Myself and my 4 friends would level by solo grinding and then agree to meet up at such-and-such a level to run an instance. Then, it was back to another week of solo grinding. I find there's much more compelling group content in this game such that you don't really have to solo grind if you don't want to (but you can).

Which was a right royal pain the [Removed for Content], frankly.
