6.1 billion

but...SoE doesn't like to brag :smileytongue:

j/k

Actually doesn't really matter to me...besides WoW is boring :smileyindifferent:

Wow, I knew it was low, but I didn't think it was THAT low. 2 million chars - I would think that means less than 500K players. EQ at its best had much more than that. I blame it on the system requirements, the depressing graphics and the general choppiness (slow loading, heavy UI, etc.). A pity, because the game had potential. But seriously... I just spent $3k on my new desktop, got a nice machine, yet EQ2 still runs like crap on it. I swear, if EQ2 had the WoW graphical engine, this game woud have 10m players, not 500k.

Just adjust a few settings, like cloth animation and shadows, should help alot I play at very high quality and just tweak a few settings down to help with the choppy thing.

There seem to be plenty of players on when I'm on /shrug. I've never had trouble getting a group if I wanted one. I don't really care what the 'census' says.

I'm not sure what kind of machine you got for 3k but if you can't run EQ2 on it at extreme graphics or very close to it and do it well then you got totally ripped off.

And at least I don't crash few minutes like I did when I tried WoW and every single time I turned in a quest.

Message Edited by Calendri on 10-13-2006 02:34 AM

Well things are certainly slower on Runnyeye than they used to be.

You can still get groups but it does tend to be the same people all the time.

Nice to see a small pickup in numbers for EQ2 recently on that chart - which is in line with my experience as my guild has started to ick up a couple of new members recently.

One big problem with those subscriber numbers is that there is no way of showing how many ACTIVE players there are compared to actual subscribers.

Ignoring that for the moment lets take subscribers at 175,000

divide this by number of servers

ie 175,000 / 23 = 7,600 per server on average

say each person plays 3 hours per day so

7,600 divided by 3/24 = 950 players on line at any one time on average !

Divide 950 by the number of zones/instances there are........ and you get a pretty small number /sigh

And thats assuming EVERY subscriber plays 3 hours per day.

In reality of course many currently dont play or only log in for very short periods.

I really really wish SOE would advertise this game more - in the UK/Europe advertising has been pretty much non existant.

Gametimecards are non existant btw........i dont live in namibia btw.... im from switzerland.

The sad thing in my mind is that EQ2 is a hell of a lot of fun right now. The changes that have been made have turned this into by far the best MMO around right now. I have also had trouble finding the game in game shops - and think that is part of the problem. If folks tried the game for the 14 day trial they would be hooked. The other issue is sure WoW has some 6m people - but 3/4 are under the age of 15 and another huge group are Korean botters (much worse than in EQ2). Right now I would say you have 2 vastly different populations:1. WoW - casual, [Removed for Content] faced, first mmo folks2. EQ2 - older, experienced mmo players etc.Obviously there are going to be a lot more [Removed for Content] faced kids then there are experienced mmo players. BUT - which would you rather play with? For my money I would rather play with 20-40 year old folks who know what they are doing than a bunch of solo minded WoW players who think a zergfest is a raid.

Would SOE ever consider merging or clustering servers somehow for EQ2 to increase world population levels? Not sure how they would go about that but when I was playing DAOC they did a similar thing by clustering servers and having many zones becoming shared. Home cities remained isolated to the specific server but you could visit other servers home cities by porting to that server. It worked quite well in my opinion and it was good to see outdoor and dungeon zones a lot more populated again.

SOE has already merged several servers to increase population numbers. The last official number given to use from SOE was 500,000+ subcribers. That wa a bit ago. Not too sure what the numbers are now but they're certainly not that high anymore. When the expansion hits there will be more people on but probably not as many as when DoF was released.

Well, they had about 350,000 at peak population and lost half that in a years time. They ran off half their customer base by the way things were done (or not done). I know a LOT of people that left because of the mess DOF was and all that happened. KoS wasn't any better really. Each day we loose more and more people in the guild and other guilds on our server having same problems.Nothing ever seems to get any better, just a continued downward spiral They had almost twice the number of servers they do now and they all got merged. If you think the average population per server is low now, you should have seen it before they merged all those servers.

Devolux wrote:..........Right now I would say you have 2 vastly different populations:1. EQ2 - older, experienced mmo players etc.

That's been a false perception for a LONG time.If you have a HUGE player base like WoW, you are going to run into MORE kids on average than say EQ2 BUT, the ratio is still nearly the same I bet.A LOT of people play WoW just because it doesn't require a 2nd mortgage on your house (or a lot fo money on upgrades) to get a system to run the game at decent speeds with good looks, on top of it still being entertaining as most any other games out there.
Message Edited by Scortch on 10-19-2006 06:20 PM

I'm a little suspicious of any site that won't post how it arrives at it's totals that's why I don't trust the data in EQ2 Census. The same goes for the other MMORPG census site, although they will at least admit they are guessing. SOE is the only one who knows for sure.

The entire issue revolves around the people who don't play very frequently. These are the ones that the census takers miss. How many are there?
