So I leveled last night (52) and I noticied my maximum damage on Ice Comet went down.

Now, my intelligence has remained the same. Sooo, this brings some questions:

Is there a cap on a spells damage? Is this cap a percentage of your overall maximum intelligence? If so - why?

Basically, it appears that when anyone levels, they have to raise their intelligence 7 points to keep their overall spell damage the same. Is this intended?

I had thought that as your intelligence cap went up, your maximum damage went up.

From reading some posts in the Wizard forum, it seems the way it works is that when you hit the level cap, the spell damage is maxed. If you are below the cap, your damage is not maxed.

http://eqiiforums.station.sony.com/eq2/board/message?board.id=23&message.id=16447&query.id=95421#M16447

Since spell damage does not grow with level anymore, It looks like it will indeed go down. I can't beleive that this is the way it was intended to work. Between lvl 50 and 60, we have to come up with a way to gain *70* int, just to keep the same damage on our Ice Comet.

edit: added link to discusion of the numbers

Message Edited by bcbroom on 10-05-2005 06:31 AM

Message Edited by bcbroom on 10-05-2005 06:32 AM

Some time ago I noticed something similar with tradeskilling. My failure rate went up after I reached a mini-ding, and back down again when I (once again) maxed whatever skill I was using. (This was during a period in which the tradeskill system was being very generous about handing out failure ticks.) My hypothesis was (and is) that the failure calculation compared your current skill with the max possible skill instead of with the skill that matches the level of the recipe. That doesn't seem right, but it is how the game appears to behave. As applied to the wizard spell, the analagous thing would be for the game to be comparing your current int to the max int at your level instead of (more reasonably, perhaps) the max int for the level of the spell (five times the level).

Edowen, in a nerdly mood

I remember exactly what you were talking about with tradeskills, and totally agree with you. There was a noticable difference in failure ticks between maxed skill and non maxed (even if my max just went up).

Unfortunately, unless there is a real bug here (ie the numbers aren't working right) to do anything different at this point is going to be a big design issue. My vote would be that the cap works on absolute numbers, instead of some type of ratio thing that seems to be going on. That way, when your cap goes up 7pts, your damage stays the same, and if you are able to reach the new cap, you get a (extremely small, maybe) extra little bit out of it.

I've seen posts on spell damage going down as you level as well and just experienced it myself. It doesn't make since and is going to really annoy people to no end. Maybe you can add a percent damage bonus from 51 to 60 to make up for the drop. Spells don't have to increase in power as you level but they sure shouldn't go down in power.

ah. . i was wondering why my 'strike of storms' fell from 1022 max damage to 1018 after i leveled. .. . not a huge difference, but certianly annoying when i like to see that number go up as i add int items.

Ok, we did a test last night with me reporting this to Ronobi. Subject was ball of flames adept 3:

Bluehair
Level 44 wizard
222 disruption skill, 165 Intelligence
BOF 1294 max damage

Jaly
Level 52 wizard
260 disruption skill, 165 Intelligence
BOF 1256 max damage

So, we are losing damage as we level.

Another thing we noticied last night. When i went from 259-260 in disruption and subjugation, my max spell damages stayed teh same. So it appears that the disruption/subjugation skills are not adding to the damage.

Jaly, 52 wizard test

Disruption is how good you are at interrupts, and subjugation is how good you are at controlling pets/enemies isn't it?

For a mage, disruption is the skill for most of my damage spells. Subjugation is the skill for spells such as paralyze - which does have a damage component.

Ya, Disruption is a spell school, like subjugation or any of the many others. Not everyone has all the various spell schools. Focus is the only thing that effects casting through interrupts now and everyone has it.
