<DIV>26 Coercer mentoring a 19 Summoner.  Killing yellow and orange hawks in Thundering Steppes.  </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>XP reduction on Coercer is indicated at 85% (which seems really steep for that situation).  19 Summoner earns 2 - 2.5% per kill.  26 Coercer earns barely enough to make the blue move a pixel (really, really hard to tell any gain at all).</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Provides no real incentive for the 26 to mentor the 19.  Is that correct?  Seems off to me.</DIV>

The incentive to mentor should be 99% in helping your friend. Also, different exp rules are put in effect when the apprentice is less than 10, 10-20, and over 20.  I mentor all the time in my guild an, if anything, I am always pleasantly surprised by the exp that I get, as I am not expecting any.  Seeing 5-10% of level 41 just for helping a newbie guildmate seems generous. I've been consistently impressed with SOE's implementation here.  I really think they got the exp bonuses and penalties just right.  And they certain made a significant improvement over the version of this system used but CoH. <div></div>

<DIV>My point on this one is that, one or two levels ago, 24 or 25, a 19 is able to group without mentoring and receive experience. </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>An orange mob to a 19 is around level 21/22 which isn't that far off from the level of mobs a 26 (caster anyway) would casually solo.  To me the XP penalty seemed steep, for such a small adjustment.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>From your description, it sounds like the 19 is on the bubble and would have a different adjustment if they were 20, but IMO the scale should be sliding instead of bracketed, if that's the case.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Don't get me wrong, I like the mentoring system, and I like helping, but I've seen mentoring cases where you can get some noticable experience mentoring, and then cases like this, where it seems you really can't.  I'd just like the system to be a little more consistent.</DIV>

Ah I understand your point now.  Thank you for clarifying. =) I guess what it boils down to is that they just needed to draw an arbitrary line someplace.  Many people were worried that the Mentor system would be easily exploitable.  So far, it has proven not to be.  So I'd rather it be artibitrary and harsh at times, but that is just my opinion.  As I said, I never really mentor expecting to get exp, so for me anything I get is just a bonus. <div></div>

<P>Try fighting blue/white mobs and see if that makes a difference.  My impression is that there is a penality on experience related to mobs too much above your level.  Why?  It's a way to discourage any possible over-twinking by making it the marginal benefit smaller.</P> <P>Other than that, I feel the same as Sebastian.  Last night I dinged 43 5% ahead of my husband.  As usual, I mentored him to allow him to catch up a bit, even though I know part of the experience gain goes to the la-la land.  And I was surprised to see 6% of experience gain for me with him catching up a mere 3%.   He is still 2% behind me.</P>
