Furthermore, I would also ask for the removal of snowmen if there's not going to be any snow on the ground. Thank you for your time and look forward to seeing what you bring us this holiday season on Test

So Ellistia gets to mount Blueberry LaFae every Frostfell but only when she's in stag form. Sounds like the start of an epic love tragedy. Or perhaps she just meant there is a stag graphic in game already .I admit that the snowpeople, candy canes, and the "Carebear/Skittles Extreme Rainbow" I encountered during the holiday quest didn't really fit into my vision of Frostfell in Freeport, and even felt too "unicorn hugging, lollipop licking, frolicking elf" for Qeynos. The Grump was of course a thinly veiled Grinch story, but I did actually like that quest reward. It is the only storybook I have with art in it, and it is campy and fun. Isn't this when we also got our music boxes? I was quite pleased to get one of each and enjoyed listening to the Fel'Withe Aria (sp?) in particular, at least until my music boxes all started to sound like grunting pigs and then finally gave no sound at all. I imagine that has more to do with a corrupted sound file on my end though. What else would you prefer to see instead this Frostell? Reindeer facsimilies we can find courtesy of Blueberry, and animals in Newb Isle, Archers Woods, the Steppes, and Everfrost at least. I think the holiday special food this year should be pickled fish and a clear drink of extremely high alcohol content. Instead of magical lights our trees will be lit traditionally, with candles. Of course alcohol, candles, and trees make a bad mix from time to time. The Frostfell trees will have a chance to catch on fire. When they do, any nearby snowmen and women will melt from the intense heat being generated. Getting drunk around the ol' tree will ensure one snow person free area.Missing candy canes, hmm how to justify that? The goblins ran off with them. The gigglegibbers apparently need massive amounts of sugar to maintain a state of gigglegibbing. As an easy source of sugar, the gobbos start a campaign to swipe all of those massive candy canes. New holiday quest: Athletic Diabetic. You have 10 minutes to run around an instance zone. You are armed with a pickled fish. Every goblin you smite with aforementioned pickled fish has a chance to drop a candy cane token. You can turn in the candy cane tokens at the end of the quest. The more tokens you have, the bigger your reward which of course is a candy cane house decoration. It would keep all offending candy canes in player homes only.I'd suggest adding some wandering carolers, but I doubt they would be welcome in laggy city zones. They probably be bugged anyway , and tend to gather around the broker to sing to the raid sized force of players that congregates there daily. How about a season of peace where Freeport and Qeynos are open to citizens of either city?Seriously, some of the holiday stuff we have is a bit over the top for me, but Frostfell doesn't last forever. I can live with the parts I like as well as the parts I don't. If anything, I would like to see some snow fall in the cities during the season. It would justify the snowballs I have and quite enjoy throwing at that brat Nathan Ironforge (who deserves to die a very painful and slow death).

How about someone stealing the racing pigs from the Isle of Mara and making ham from them? Then you have to 1. Find replacements for the pigs2. Catch the thieves and 3. Punish them by forcing them to eat lutefisk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lutefisk).Freeporters can do the quest for the Perfect Mustard (tm) for the thieves instead.

The candy canes are annoying, yes. But for the love of my sanity, please NO omnipresent xmas music in the cities. Some of us actually enjoy the game music, and a whole lot of people simply don't celebrate xmas. Having it shoved in our faces day in and day out in our real lives is bad enough; we don't need it done in our virtual world too.

I agree with Scigster This is the time of year all the grumps come out and get offended by such things as "suger red striped canes", and pine trees with lights in them. Personally, I think celebrations of any sort are fun and I like the change to the scenery. What decorations or anything are acceptable to all any time of year? Organic fruits and vegetables only?

There isn't a problem celebrating Frostfell. The problem is with the monolithic candycanes, snowmen in the middle of summer and omnipresent...Frostfell music. Colorful candles, NPCs saying "Happy Frostfell", confetti - those are good. Gifts are good. Making Qeynos and Freeport into a poor attempt at selling Xmas cards is not so good.

Message Edited by Vicious on 10-18-2006 05:56 PM

Personally I just wish they would put it someplace that doesnt already have a huge lag issue. My computer isnt the best out there but it runs very well, until I get to Qeynos Harbor, at which point I tend to lag out more then anyplace else and all those trees/candy canes/snow people (must be PC)/boxes and stuff just made me want to go down to Sony and stick someone in the eye with said candy canes. Other then that even though I am not a fan of Christmans IRL (come on people, Christmas decorations being put up the first week of October is way to friggen early), I am by no means a grinch or grump! Well most of the time... Ok sometimes... Well maybe the 3 thursday of April on a leap year... :smileymad:

Message Edited by nighthunter on 10-18-2006 07:44 PM

Snowballs? Fine. Winter weather? Fine. That's all thematic. "Frostfell"-themed quest lines? Eh, whatever, nobody's forcing me to do them. But please don't insult everyone's intelligence by pretending that filling Qeynos and Freeport with candy canes and oddly familiar-sounding music is anything other than a transparent repackaging of Christmas. Put whatever fantasy label you want on it, it's still just blatant, out-of-character pandering that's as stupid and irritating as that Star Wars "holiday special" with Life Day.Look, I get that some of you have this holiday that you care quite a bit about. That's totally okay. But you need to understand that there are quite a lot of people that don't celebrate it. We get it shoved in our face day in and day out for the better part of two months a year by people who unthinkingly assume that everyone else celebrates the same thing they do. It gets old fast--heck, for plenty of people who /do/ celebrate it, it gets old fast.It does not strike me as too much to ask that we not be force-fed this holiday in a fantasy world in which it has no place. At the very least, can we have an option in the control panel to turn off "seasonal" themes so that we don't have to load and deal with all the graphics and music that doesn't affect gameplay and which we don't care about?

I think it should be like Futurama's vision of Christmas in the future. Santa has gone wild and goes on a killing spree. There should be quests to free the enslaved elves forced to make christmas presents. Some city zones should become dangerous, we need to cleanse them of stampeding reindeer and evil grinches on a crime spree. The christmas decorations should be like gang tags from roaming gangs of evil santa's helpers. Christmas Carolers are sirens that capture you with thier music, the cookies have been poisoned and make you grow hair in strange places. That certainly would be more keeping with the world's dangerous theme and feel.

Organic fruits and vegetables only?

Silk

I'm one of those horrible grumps. The point that all of us grumps try to make is that Christmas is NOT the only holiday celebrated in December, and taking a Christian-centric view of the winter holidays in a massive environment where you have people from all over the world is not only thoughtless, but offensive.

Coming up with unique lore, decorations, stories, etc., for Frostfell that don't necessarily have to do directly with the Christian holiday of Christmas not only prevents people from being offended (well, some people will be offended about stuff no matter WHAT you do), but also adds to the immersion of the game. Why would they celebrate Christmas in Norrath? I don't see any bells, carpets, or other portals that go straight to Earth...and right into a home where a family is gathered around the Christmas tree. Where would Norrathians learn about Christmas?

The answer is: they wouldn't. They would have their OWN ways of celebrating the onset of winter. If SOE really wanted to give Norrath an authentic feel, each ethnic burrow of Qeynos and Freeport would have its own decorations and celebrations. Halflings wouldn't necessarily celebrate in the same way that High Elves would, for example.

All the "grumps" are trying to do is to point out that there's more going on in the world aside from Christmas, and rather than taking the view that "if you get offended, that's YOUR problem", we try to be proactive by coming up with ways to celebrate and decorate that are more SEASONAL rather than RELIGIOUS.

Uh they use decorated trees, snowmen, candy canes, snowballs and oddly familar jingles, sure... but they dont actually mention christ once, or god. These are all loose christmas symbols, but none of them actually have anything to do with the real religious story behind christmas. Basically SoE do what pretty much every MMO does at this time of year, put on a commercial non-offensive festive theme. I could see how it could be irritating, im not christian and i am not overly fond of christmas tunes myself, but i did enjoy last years quests and items.

Noone is forcing you to hang around in the frostfall affected zones, theres plenty of other places to go while the events are taking place.

I would have to agree with EvilAstroboy. If they were in fact putting up nativity scenes and had angels flying around singing about the arrival of the King, then i could see the religious reference. However all they are doing is taking part in a very widely celebrated holiday season. It is impossible to please ever single group of people. SOE is doing the intelligent thing and pleasing a large part of the community. There are always going to be people left out in any situation, but perhaps if more people practiced tolerance there would be less of an issue. Think of it this way, what if a Christian got on here and complained that SOE was bringing back more than one God and it insulted them. Most would tell them it's only a game, and to get over it or play something else. It holds true for this as well. I hope they make a fun and unique environment for frostfell. I hope it is over the top and even happens to put a few people in better moods. Thank you SOE for taking the time to make holidays like these present in the game at all. There are a lot of people who really enjoy it, and as such don't find the time to come in to forums and make a big deal about it.
