View Full Version : Inconsistent rollback after server downtime

It has always been my understanding that the server takes snapshots of the game state on a regular basis, and that after normal server downtime or a crash, the game basically restarts from the most recent snapshot.A perfect example of this happens if you have been travelling across a zone when the server went down. When you log back into the game, you will probably find yourself some distance back along your path of travel.Whilst that is a minor annoyance, what is a major annoyance is what happens if you are out harvesting and have the bad luck to harvest a rare just before the server goes down. Even though the rare may have been visible in your inventory, and even though the harvest event may be recorded in your log file: after the server comes back up, and you log in again, you will not have that rare! You also get a strange thing happening if you are crafting (making first pristines) when the server goes down. In that case, when you log back into the server you will have in your inventory everything you made, but your recipie book may think that the last couple of items have not yet been made by you. When that happens, you can make them again, and get the first pristine bonus again.

I'm sure other odd things may occur as well, but I have not spotted any

I understand your concern and empathize. However... there's non stop spam before server goes down for regular updates. It'd seem like common sense to me to not wait till the server boots you. The message itself asks you to camp/logout at a safe location. If you're out harvesting or tradeskilling when you are fully aware that the server will be restarted I'd think one should make every attempt possible to limit any such issue you mentioned by camping out early.

Since you ignore the server messages, I doubt there's much anyone at SOE can do to appease you.

I've been playing EQ2 since 2004, so I'm well aware of the way this game plays. I did not even consider the idea of sending a /petition to sony about the rare I lost out on as I knew it was extremely unlikely that it would be reimbursed

It's always been my understanding that some of the "snapshots" are taken in batches. Obviously when you camp, your current state gets fully saved.

But, yes, the best policy is to avoid the whole hassle and /camp the second you see that 1st warning .. or if not .. to at least not do anything you will regret later

Indeed. One thing I never do is craft rares just before downtime as I don't want to risk an accident that results in the loss of the rare I was working on. But ordinary grinding, I do that right up until the server goes down. After all, downtime announcements are not always accurate. There have been times when the server was still up for 20 minutes after the announced downtime, so if I had logged out before then, that would have been 20 minutes of crafting or harvesting time I would have missed out on
