View Full Version : Shall I cancel Splitpaw preorder as an Illusionist or wait for Combat Changes?

Hello all, I am currently thinking about cancelling my splitpaw preorder because the preorder zone is just not doable as a solo illusionist (my main char) and I was really looking forward to having a good solo adventure story line to follow here. So if the preorder zone is a teaser for the adv pack I will not be able to play it. Moreover I feel quite frustrated because other classes can whooosh through the zone in no time (at least I can do with my alt, a lvl28 mystic). So my question is: Will I be able to better solo the zone as soon as the combat changes go live (esp. the noticable effects of high int)? Since they are already on test maybe you folks can shed some light on this.

I wouldn't cancel the pre-order.

I have a crap time soloing myself (I'm at a particularly thorny level, where all my skills are green or blue, but all the mobs are yellow) and I've been dying a ton, and the Splitpaw zones are STILL the most fun I've had in ages. There's a solo way and a group way for just about everything, and with patience and timing it should be good (and one major thing we've been helping test in the last three days is add radius/aggro range, to prevent people wiping out all the time. I went BOOM a bunch in a solo zone, hehe... aggroed through a wall. They fixed that I think). There's also a lot of creative thinking going on. Really, I think the zones are well worth it, even if you need to wait for a partner to play it due, or three buddies to take the heroic route. Combat changes or not I wouldn't cancel it. I can't solo most of it but it's still a better-spent $8 than even the rest of the $15 monthly, I would almost say. Give it a chance.

As for what SOE's up to, no idea. But that's my Splitpaw endoresment, hehe.

I'd cancel and wait to be honest. I ran through on 3 toons. On my 28 illusionist was by far the hardest. My 23 Warder found it trivial. 37 swash died a few times, I was rusty and too scared to evac in case I got booted outside and lost my progress. My Illusionist however, was just more hassle than it was worth. Killed a few groups, died once, then found the next group was yellow, with 3 casters and a healer. Cheque please!

Thanks for your answers. I think I will stick to splitpaw, but play it with my mystic. It's really fun with this toon! As you said, doing it with an illu is just not worth the hassle.

My Illusionist is Lvl34, by the way. This seems to be a particularly tricky level because I only have one functioning mezz at my disposal (the other is greyed out and will not work on the gnolls) and the AE mezz mezzes me as well (this is different to coercers who "only" get rooted). So I may give it another try at lvl37 when I receive another mezz or when the combat changes go live (whichever comes first...)

Maybe I should stop looking for meduim armor and find good light armor that has good wisdom caster stats?
Message Edited by Jalwyn on 06-20-2005 01:11 PM

Just my 2cp on this issue… I just hit 50 with my illusionist, and most of level 49 was spent soloing / duoing the splitpaw zone. I know duoing isn’t the topic at hand so I’ll skip that. While I don’t remember exactly what spells I had a 34, I can tell you the basic strategy that I used.

--Open with a AoE spell to get maximum damage.

--Use AoE mezz. This may seem a little counter intuitive, but chances are one of the mobs is going to be out of range or is going to resist etc. If one of the mobs doesn’t get mezzed, he’s going to come hit you once, hence breaking the mezz on you. When this happens, you’re sitting with the situation of 3 mezzed mobs, and one mob to kill at a time.

--By using a combination of DoTs, and keeping the others mezzed I was able to take them down one at a time with no problem.

There were times that I had to run and start over, but that’s part of the challenge. There was actually only once that I gave up on a mob and left the zone. This was a level 50 (so 1 level higher than me) shadowknight. Between the high HPs of a fighter class and the Harm Touch etc, I just couldn’t kill him (and believe me I tried).

Other classes definitely can get through this zone easier, but it is challenging for most classes. Like other people have said, I’ll stick it out and keep trying. You really get better with your character in tough situations. :smileyhappy:

Better to wait...

Although eevrything appears very discouraging and things are getting nerfed all over the place I have faith.

I know that somehow something will click at SOE and everything will finally make sense and work well.

Most importantly the game will be fun and no matter what class you pick you will be happy.

Wait for Split Paw and wait for Expansion.

Once both of those come out and if everything is a disaster then cancel. This is what many people are doing.

I"m not happy with the preorder either. I thought it was supposed to be a 20+ zone, but my 25 monk can't solo there which is pretty bad considering monks are supposed to be a good solo class. I'm thinking I may cancel too.
