View Full Version : Mail system city restrictions

<DIV>Could you please remove the restriction for sending item to people from another city. I know this doesn't matter much to people who live in qeynos but freeport is a major underdog when it comes to economy on almost all servers. This hurts crafters in freeport really bad in many ways. Our only way to compete with qeynosians crafters atm is to sell things 20% less so on the black market its the same cost.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I mean no real pvp or anything exists in the game to force this kinda seperation. </DIV>

It always been seperated. also with shared banks which are city based. And when it comes to which city overrules which. that's server based. Besides it adds a little roleplaying into it. No fun if all can just share. That would make freeport and geynos like allies which is completely against the lore

<P>Doesn't make them allies... They can send normal mail to each other</P> <P>Also if i wanted to roleplay i would play on a roleplay server. I wouldn't mind being an underdog if i could actually fight. I'm not a big pvper but i don't like being an underdog and feeling powerless about it. </P> <P> </P> <P>If you can have a black market then why couldn't you have a same type of system from qeynos freeport mail... maybe it should cost abit more (which is still abit unfair but its a step) </P> <P>Also it doesn't vary very much per server.... almost every server one city is an extreme underdog when it comes to economy</P>

<P>Do what I do, sneak into a friends apartment and sell.</P> <P>I do that with my provi alt because theirs alot more provi's in freeport than in q.</P>

It wouldn't be as bad if the game didn't almost support qeynos more then freeport.... No real reason to join either city and qeynos has abit more of an advantage when it comes to the quests they get and how much nicer the city looks.
They won't do it, because they want to protect the seperate market places. Removing this restriction would completely do away with these independant markets and make parts of the game like the black markets completely worthless. <div></div>

<P>Thats is pretty much the point.. the seperate market does not work.</P> <P>If they actually tested balance between the two cities then yeah it would have been great but they didn't balance the cities</P>

<P>This whole segragation this stinks for several reason.... My girlfriend and I both play.. Her character of choice is a good aligned character, and my character of choice is an evil aligned character.... Because of this segregation...</P> <P> it makes it extreamly hard to share a house, as which ever city the house is in, the other runs the risk of getting kicked out without even making it to the house..</P> <P>After hunting and it comes time to sell stuff, one of us has to go to Qeynos, and the other to Freeport, then requires additional time to get both characters back together...</P> <P>On my server, the Qeynos market is overflowing with stuff to buy, while the Freeport maket is nearly barren... not only does this hard to find item, but unless you want to spend tons of money paying the commision, you are then forced to traveling to the opposite city.. Once again, you run into the possibility of getting kicked out before you even reach your destination...</P> <P>Quests are either impossible or near impossible to get (in opposing cities), or require inside help from someone from that city..</P> <P>Quest rewards are not duplicated in each city.. IE can't find a quest in the opposite city resulting in the same type / stats item..</P> <P>I wanted to make alts of oposite alignment, but can't share bank with my other characters, so I am restricted to making all characters the same alignment...</P> <P>And the list goes on.... And the mail system is riddled with the same segregation....</P> <P>My girlfriend is in Qeynos shopping while I'm in Freeport shopping (because of the segregation), and she ask me... Honey, can you give me 5 gold so I can buy this piece of furniture for our house that you can't get to anyways??... So, now because of Segregation, not only would it take me 20 minutes or so to run all the way from Freeport to Qeynos (which the item she wants to buy might be sold by then), I can't even send her a email with a gift of 5 gold in it so she can buy the item...</P> <P>You are looking for some crafted items needed for your recipie... Can't find any on the market... you do a /who all LFW and there is a crafter, but thier in the opposite aligned city... Now if both character are low level, neither one can get to the other city to sell / trade items, and the markup from having to go to a fence to get the items, makes the item too expensive to buy... The mail system would work, one person sends the money and the other send the item.... But wait, Segregation once again prevents this, because you can't send items or money to the opposite aligned city...</P> <P>And so on....</P> <P> </P> <P>Segregation actually ruins the game... I bet if you put in a neutral city somewhere, both Qeynos and Freeport would be deserted, because no one likes the forced segregation....</P> <P> </P> <P>Gwern</P> <P> </P>
OMG! This is so silly! They've separated the cities for RPG purposes! It is an MMORPG, not just a full time FPS. And yes, some people actually PLAY the RPG side of the game....heaven forbid. If it's so important for you to go shopping in virtuality with "girlfriend" then roll a Qeynos toon. Or actually...go to the MALL! <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />

<DIV>Then make more Roleplaying servers... if that is your thing. I am all for roleplaying too but not in favor of being unbalanced. <DIV>Gawd I am getting tired of the whole argument, we shouldn't be able to share bank slots/mail across factions because it ruins the roleplay aspect! Most people don't roleplay when thay play! What the person is mostly asking for is to be able to share across factions. How would this screw up the fence? If people still want to buy stuff and the person isn't online you still have to use the fence or foot it across several zones to risk being booted out! If someone finds something cheaper on one faction market over the other, you still would have to have help (like you do now) to buy the item or pay the premium fence charge. SOE needs to change this as it doesn't impact ANY aspect of the two cities fighting one another. All this does it make it inconvenient for friends/spouses/alts to exchange items. I know my guildies are probably getting tired of helping with transfers, but I want to experience both sides of opposing cities/quests so I continue to waste time doing this!! But what I don't appreciate is having to go thru the pain of handing some simple items from one alt to another alt. After all I'm going to do it, so why can't SOE help me out here??</DIV>
Sony not only won't, I don't think they *can* force "balance" between the cities. It's a function of how many people make chars of the respective alignments, and how they choose to play those chars. There's more on the market in Qeynos because more people made Qeynosian chars and/or more of those chars are crafters/take the trouble to go into merchant mode. Qeynos and Freeport are in a cold war. Their philosophies of life are completely different and they aren't gonna be in regular communication with each other. SOE could, without damaging the roleplaying aspect, implement a black market mail system the same way they've done with the black market broker. I admit I would love to help out my one evil char (so far) with some of the cash I've made on my good chars. But then again, why would a Dwarf Templar even know, much less give money to, an Erudite Necromancer? The black market broker is a money sink. SOE doesn't get rid of money sinks. To make it worthwhile in SOE's mind as a money sink, the black market mail system would have to be hella expensive. Only thing you're able to do is roll a char of the opposite alignment. If you respond to the argument "it would ruin the roleplay aspect" with "I don't care -- I don't roleplay" then what difference does it make what alignment your character is? <div></div>

<DIV>Personally I hope they dont lift the restrictions. with one of the 2 additional slots i created a to-become-shadowknight and I enjoyed the IoR once again.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I am looking forward to do all the FP quests with him but if i could send him all the gear he needs from my qeynos main it would make that completely pointless.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Since I know I WOULD twink him if I could I am glad SOE doesnt allow me so I can play EQ2 kind of a second time until my SK hits 30.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV>

I too feel the mail restrictions should be lifted. Maybe charge more for mail sent to different factions. Ya see it cost more for the mail guy to travel to the other citys outside there own, due to a more dangerous run etc. (if your an RP guy) I can send a piece of mail to IRAQ, why can't my Iksar send a package to my dwarf buddy in Qeynos.
add a blackmarket mailing system....sending mail to the opposing city will cost some sp (20 sp mebbe). There, problem solved and you can RP it as well.

Do not get me wrong, I see your problems, and I see your frustration and I symphatize with you and your GF on having this daily problem that subtracts from your enjoyment. Nevertheless .. The seggretation system is not a bug. It's a feature. Why? .. Because it keeps the game dynamic and diverse. How? By making gameplay between citys and characters different. I don't know if you have played the original EverQuest, If you do, you may already be aware why this has to be in EQ2 what was not in EQ1. Let me brush up ... In EQ1 you were born into the world as a "citizen" of a particular city somewhere on the continent of Antonica. You would live out your lowlevel life within and around these cities, adventuring outside your safe haven was both dangerous and time consuming. Often you would find - if you made the journey anyway - that the citizens of that other city you came to visit didn't like you at all and would attack you at sight - unless you did some hardcore (as in very hardcore) questing to improve your faction with them. Cities were populated, content was explored and people would play the game (as I see it) the way it was supposed to be played. EQ1 expanded, new continents were added and the pure geography of it all made travelling from one end of the world to the other quite a project. Not only would you have to cross dangerous zones of significant size, you would also find yourself waiting for a boat to arrive to let you travel to the other contitnents (islands) of Norrath. This of course if you couldn't find either a druid or a wizard that would make it their pride (and profession) to transport people around for a fee. Many many players liked this world due to the fact that nothing came easy, and progress was earned by knowledge, persistanse and planning ahead. What came - and (IMO) ruined the game (for the original players) was two expansions, one more than the other. The Shadows of Luclin expansion was a big expension, adding not only a new graphcis engine, but also a completely new world, or moon rather to the EQ universe. So how do you travel to the moon in a preindustrial reality? .. By magic of course, again druids and wizards was given transportation spells, but the world was presented with the four spires that would let anyone travel to and from the Nexus from the four major continents of Norrath. Spires would become active only once every 30 minutes, so planning was still required allthough not as nescessary or time consuming than before. The SOL expansion also brought the Bazaar - the centralized marketplace for all Norrathians, good or evil. Allthough the SOL expansion brought a lot of good and needed features to the world, it also took away something unique. The markets of the citys dissapeared overnight. The Easts Commonlands tunnels (where people would travel from afar to trade off their goods, person to person / player to player) was left empty and a lot of player interaction vanished, never to return. Lost was also the social interaction between players crossing the seas, or waiting for their boat to arrive, Now - as much as I'd like to see boats arrive, and mariner-bells to dissapear in EQ2 - this was not a complete disaster on all accounts. The market was broken though. And platselling companies moved in to ruin the Economy in a scale not seen before. The catastrophe came with the next expansion - the Planes of Power, and the arcade-teenageeasy-whiner-bohoo-plane of knowledge zone, linking almost every single zone together in one gigantic transit zone. Lost was the idea of exploring and travelling. You could literaly move to all four "corners" of the world, by using the Plane of Knowledge, in a fragment of the time it would have taken before. Even with the SOL expansion. You could easily find yourself spending more time loading beetween zones, than actualy travelling. What happened was of course that the cities of Norrath emptied out completely. Most new players would do nothing but head for the portal to POK book (the portal), straight to the bazaar and get twinked up, then back to the newbie zones for a short time, powerleveling content in hours, that would have taken players weeks or even months to complete in the early days, only to progress to the (fabled) end-game... Now, back to EQ2 and your situation. Yes it's unfortunate that you both live in separate cities, have trouble sharing house and economy but seriously - you have noone to blame but yourselves. You both knew that citiziens of either city would have no way of interacting by means of the game itself. You would have to do this on your own. You could both have chosen to betray your city and move your belongings and trade to the other city before your toons had matured completely. The way of solving your problem is for you to fix it yourselves, NOT by bending the world around your situation. If you both have passed level 17 well there's really only one option left - and that is rerolling. Otherwise grabbing a betrayal quest might be the best way to proceed - or simply live with, and accept the difficulties you are having becaus you chose to go against the basic pillars of the entire game. </span><div></div>

<P>5 Stars beetle. I could not have said it better myself in fact I tried and failed in my other post.</P> <P>On a side note I was never a big fan of the commonlands and liked the bazaar but eveyrthing else you mentioned did kill EQ in many ways from its original design. In fact this is why EQ2 is the way it is. To fix the mistakes made in the original while keeping many of the aspects which made EQ great. Personally I am hovering aroudn 80 to 90% happy with EQ2. I have enjoyed my time in EQ2 more then I ever did in EQ1.</P>

A</p> <p>Twinking issue... thats your own issue... why should someone be punished for a lack of self control on your part. </p> <div></div><hr></blockquote> First of all, If you read my post again, you'll probably see that I actualy try to make a point, that I'd like to see mariner-bells replaced by boats. Boats on a schedule, boatrides that takes time. I know this was in the original designplans for EQ2 but it got scrubbed before release. So I actualy do believe that travelling in EQ2 is to easy. This, however, does not - by any means - bring EQ2 travel within comparison of EQ1 travel, post POK. My reply was to the poster that argued that travel and mail-restrictions should be lifted from the game, and even that a neutral city should be formed, simply because he and his GF chose to, by intent or by ignorance (doesn't really matter) to place themselves in their situation. I myself (a Qeynosian) have joined up with a Freeport based guild. I do find it troublesome to run back and forth whenever I have to help a guildie do stuff in the commonlands or Nek forest, but that's part of the game I chose to play. I could have chosen to betray my city - for the mans of comfort - but my halfling couldn't live outside his beloved Qeynos. As for my arguments regarding EQ1 on the trade and twinking issuses. Yes, you had a centralized point of trade before SOL, in the EC tunnels, but you also had markets in your home city, hence you would actualy have business going there, even after having outleveled your immediate surrounding zones. Not only to buy spells from the vendors, but also to interact with players of your kind. As for twinking, well surely that's a personal issue. You can dedice not to twink, as well as you can decide to sit on the beach, alone, imagining that there's 50 other players next to you - waiting for the boat. You can also imagine that you - by doing quests from your hometown, and by killing mobs in the vicinity, can actualy progress your character and get him/her equipped with decent armor, without having the 1000pp's it would really take you to get started in the bazaar. But let's all just stop imagining, and realizing this was simply not the way EQ1 came to work. Not matter what race or class you chose, your "life in Norrath" would basicly be all the same. You would log in to POK and log out of POK. you would buy your spells from the POK vendors (save a few annoying ones, you would have to go get from the cities), and you would buy or push your KEI from the main bank in POK. The only diversity would be the mental setting of the guild you chose to join - if any, and what that guild was set on doing. The game itself pretty much had nothing to offer on that part anymore. Making a neutral city in EQ2 would be exactly the same. /B </span><div></div>

<P>the boats are fun the first 3 or 4 times you do it.... but unless sitting around waiting for 5-10 minutes multiable times just to get to a group is your idea of fun in the long run... they shouldn't be added to the game. </P> <P> </P> <P>I admit the first time i went on the boat to fv i was amazed at the boat... it was a thrill.... 4 boat rides later i was pulling my hair out. Ok..... The restrictions on the Mailing system is that you can send mail to freeport <---> qeynos, but you can't send money/items to freeport <---> qeynos. if they lifted the restrictions, and have it to where you can send mail W/ items/money... how exactly does that hender the Black market or whatever it is that the ones that want to keep the restrictions are complaining, saying that lifting it will do damage to various things... I totally disagree, because I have a lvl 28 Conj..... yes i know there are currently problems with them, I am on the forfront with the arguements that they need to be fixed.... anyways i tried to send money attached to a Mail to one of my Freeport ALTs so he could buy a higher version of Sneak.... but i was unable to send money to him, but i could send just a plain ordinary letter to him w/ nothing attached. I actually hoped that i would have been able to send him some money so he can get the higher spell.... but i can't They need to lift the restrictions on the Mail System... P.S. ok, now i will get back to the front lines on the Issuses with the Summoner's Lineage. <div></div>

I think the OP's argument is weak. Kind of stupid for him and his girl friend to start in different cities. Most people check with friends/family to determine where to start so they can play together.

Well, I can understand why SOE doesn't want money and items to be sent from Freeport<--->Qeynos, because there are items that sell in one city significantly cheaper than in the other city. People (most likely professional game players who sell money on Ebay) will corner markets by taking advantage of the transfer from city to city for free idea. The 40% fence cost makes it so that if my Qeynos character buys items from Freeport then I can resell them for only a lsight profit higher if any at all (a perfect example of this is Weathered Orc Bone Fragments). Simply put, without having to pay the 40% commission, I think too many markets would get cornered and prices would skyrocket. I too wish I could transfer money and items from my good characters to my evil one, but I understand why SOE doesn't let me. That being said... I recently started a new character that is playing in Freeport - my first Freeport character. I have to say - it is very difficult to sell anything in Freeport. Less than 25% of the server population is in Freeport (if I were to venture a guess). Although after playing in Freeport, I really enjoy it (the NPCs make me laugh, the quests are humorous, etc.), I can understand why nobody would want to be a Freeport character. It is difficult to sell anything on the market, less quests, the "Ugly" character that only appeal to a fraction of players (c'mon - you all know most people wanna play that dashingly handsome Elf, or the adorably sweet Wood Elf). Freeport does need something tangible to make it an appealing city in order to boost population there. Therein lies the problem - the low population of Freeport. Increase the population, and many of the problems people address on threads such as these will subside. Well, that's what I think at least. Don't ask me how to increase the populaton in Freeport - I'll leave that up to game designers who are far more creative than I am. <div></div>

The mail system was never intended to be a backdoor way to get around the FP vs Q city restrictions. Accept it and move on. <div></div>
