I suggested this back on the EQLive boards and got some very positive feedback from the community and even a mod. Despite the fact it never really happened, i still believe it would be a great benefit to implement:

Create a new forum for Post-Patch Feedback (only mods can create new posts, but all users can reply to posts). After major patches, create a new thread in the forum (for example, after tuesday's patch you'd have made a post: "March 8th, 2005 Update #4 Feedback"). This will be the central point for all users to go and tell you what bugs/breaks/etc happened with the patch. Now here's why i say this is a good idea:

First, this thread will be a crucial point of information for the devs/mods in terms of what the community perceives that the latest update has affected. This type of thread would not only serve the mods in passing on information to developers, but it would also appease the community with the knowledge that if they post to this thread, their plights over bugs created by patched will be heard. This could be a major communication tool between the community and developers.

Secondly, this thread could possibly negate some of the post patch spam in all the other forums. There are 150 Coercer threads in the Spell/Abilities/Etc Forum since the patch. This cannot be doing the mods any good in filtering out useful information from that forum, or even on that issue. Centralize the point of information as to what went wrong and you'll get your answers, as well as cleaning out the other forums and leaving only non patch issues/discussion.

Now the bad of the idea is that the thread does, of course, have the potential to turn into a flamefest and/or a board for everyone to post all their issues regardless of it being a patch issue or not. Despite this fact, tho, the value of the information you'd get in feedback could and would likely well outweigh any flaming/other suggestions that went on.

It's really just a suggestion, as it's something that i've utilized as an IT Manager to get feedback for the end users i program for after major updates. Implement or not, it's really just my opinion that this could potentially be very useful for everyone.

Thanks all for taking the time to read!

-Aeg

Fine idea, makes perfect sense. I know of at least one other MMORPG where this happens and it seems to help considerably.

We generally post that in Requests from the Devs each time we put one of the major updates on the Test server. Members of the Test community have the important role of helping us refine elements of an update before it gets pushed to Live servers.

Also, according to the big red letters in the top of that forum, only testers should post there. Once again, you limit yourself to only a sample size of the community... as sample which may not accurately reflect the opinions and concerns of every possible class/tradeskiller. Also, i would imagine that once a patch goes live your test community may (and i stress may) not pay as close attention to those test requests, and simply accept the patch since it is in good enough shape to have gone live. I won't argue your patching methods/etc., but i will say extended testing and feedback, beyond the test server is needed.

However, i do see your point. I wont argue this to death just trying to give some constructive feedback on methods that work for me.

-Aeg

Message Edited by Aegorian on 03-10-2005 04:51 PM

I believe that misleads them into thinking we all like the things that the folks that play on test like.

I think what you POSTED is a GREAT idea, However I think the way that SOE is doing it right now is the only way they could do it. I don't think you realize exactly how many people we are talking about here. Thousands of people are going to POST on that forum and not for the reason the forum is meant for. I can see it now... POST-PATCH FEEDBACK.... "I THINK WIZARDS SHOULD BE TEH MORE POWERFULL!!1!" I know you mentioned "flaming and other suggestions" in your POST I just wanted to bring up the fact that it is going to be A LOT more than you think. I think that having the test servers and having "testing people" log onto those servers to try it out is the only way around that. Could be wrong though :

Perhaps this should go in the "Forum Help and Suggestions" forum? Otherwise devs, like Blackguard, might think you are talking about test updates
