<DIV>I need to be able to change my last name. Since I can't use all caps, like in the title "Everquest II", my lastname turned out as Ii instead of II like I intended. Can't get anyone to reasonably respond to my petitions and ingame feedback hasn't produced the results I want...so, the message is now posted here for others to post agreement or disagreement posts.</DIV><p>Message Edited by Draclif on <span class=date_text>02-25-2005</span> <span class=time_text>01:40 PM</span>

<DIV>Is there any kind of guide on how to set your last name and how it will look when you do. I have heard other stories like this so I don't want to set mine until I know I will get it right. </DIV>

<DIV><FONT face="Comic Sans MS" color=#cc00ff size=3>I would like to add myself to the list of folks that want to be able to change last names. I have a character I tried a surname on to see how it looked, not knowing I would be stuck with it (I know my bad read the manual), I just want to get rid of it don't even want a new one. I wonder if they could make it so you show/notshow last name like titles?</FONT></DIV>
<DIV>It's not poor programming. They have the tools to change it -- look, GMs delete and change first names and last names every day. It exists and they CAN do it. They just refuse to do it if you muck up. I don't call this poor programming, I call it poor customer service.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Moreover, ever notice your dark elf PC cannot have an apostrophe in his name -- SOE claims last names cannot support it. YET EVERY NPC DARK ELF SURNAME HAS ONE. Gee, do you smell that? Tastes like bile.</DIV>

<DIV>Heh my necro has a crappy last name. I had another one picked out, but then I found out that we can't have traditional teir'dal last names so I just made something dumb relating to my class (Deathcaller)... I'd love to be able to change it... and o ya, ENABLE the ' character and maybe even multiple capitals in the surname <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /></DIV>

<DIV>Even in EQ1 characters couldn't have apostrophes in their last names, the only way to get one was through a petition. If you want to change your name that bad, simply petition for it - its always been a common practice in EQ1.</DIV>

<DIV>yeah gms in eq2 dont do anything.... ever.... unless its to help the guild that their player character is in... see sig for my thoughts on GMs (direct in context quote)</DIV> <DIV>and I didn't play eq1, just eqoa where we didn't have surnames hehe</DIV><p>Message Edited by Miral on <span class=date_text>02-22-2005</span> <span class=time_text>04:34 PM</span>
<DIV>Agreed need to be able to change it or at the veryleast /lastname SHOW /lastname HIDE so that if like may of us you muck it up you can hide it and jsut go round without it being shown..</DIV>
<DIV>Hi!</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>In addition to having a number of friends who are unhappy with their last names, I would also like to have the option. The reality is that there is no game dependency upon having a unique last name. I know four people that share a Last Name...</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>There are many ways to prevent people from going overboard, i.e.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>a. Allow last name change once per period of time (day/week/month/...)</DIV> <DIV>b. As an earlier posted noted, charge for it</DIV> <DIV>c. Have a quest to enable one to change the last name, a much simpler version of a betrayal quest <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /></DIV> <DIV>d. Earn the right to do so by finding a drop from a chest</DIV> <DIV>...</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Anyway, if there is no in-game uniqueness requirement, and things like /who don't even show it... why not allow the many folks who wish to make such a change to do so?</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Thanks,</DIV> <DIV>Twilshar</DIV> <DIV>Explorers of Legend</DIV> <DIV>Najena</DIV>

<DIV>I like my last name, I put a TON of thought into it... I get complimented on it almost daily. The question is, why didn't you put that much thought into your's?</DIV>

Most people simply did not know they could not change it, or mentioned above a particular player did not know the formatting requirements of the name - for instance the guy that did not know it only capped the first character. </P> <P>Your post here is irrelevant to what everyone is sayin. Basically your sayin I am better than you "Tough ****" live with your mistake. I am one of those few who was misinformed about the restrictions on choosing a last name and happen to want to change mine also. If nothing more, I would be very happy with simply removing my last name altogether.</P> <P>In regards to other people's posts, I agree - I would be willing to pay with in-game currency to change it. And whoever said SOE has the capability to change names is absolutely RIGHT! They do change names every day - in fact they have the capability to do so within a matter of seconds. Most of the CS Reps have that ability right from their management console in their lil cubicles! </P> <P>I dont know what their deal is. A lot of times you can blame poor programming, but in this case the option is there - they are just choosing not to implement it.</P>

I think they should a) add a dialog confirmation that shows your name as it will appear (case, etc intact) and b) give everyone a chance to reset their name once, like you can do with traits and such which are much, much more involved and potentially imbalancing than a last name.

<DIV>I'm going to have to lean in the [Removed for Content] poor programming direction. So many of the non-game breaking things eq2 players ask for, we are told..."just can't be reasonably programmed" but these exact same things, eq1 is implementing every new patch. so if it can be programmed into their code, and not eq2's code, i say fire all the dumb [Removed for Content] SOE hired for eq2, or get someone from eq1 to give them the training they need. Surname change shouldn't be a big deal to offer, especially as its often SOE's fault it doesn't look the way you expect, and it could be made a money sink as well.</DIV>
<DIV> How constructive is it to just say fire everyone that doesn't do what I want. I wish there was another term for this other than whining. First of all, you dont know the reason behind their stance on this. You dont sit in the developing room and make any decisions at all. From where im sitting, it appears you made a mistake and are frustrated with that mistake. And most of all, this mistake has no impact what so ever on the game, which would be my guess why it's not on their priority list. This is only an issue of personal preference. I was wary myself of picking a good last name and to this day still havent chosen one even though ive been level 50 for awhile.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> Now to the contructive posts, it seems there are concerns on this issue and making an option to view your last name before you choose it is a viable one. Like the option to view your title in EQ1. Until I am discriminated by not having a last name or having a really dumb one. I am just not going to worry about it.</DIV>

I tried to petition to have proper case envoked in one of my character's last names (from Mcknight to McKnight) but the customer service response stated flatly that this is not a service that GMs provide and that there was no way, currently, to change last names.

I don't believe staff should be tasked with assisting players with choosing a new name, which is the primary reason for the current policy. I believe there should be a command one can use once and only once, to fix/change your last name. One grace opportunity, nothing more. This serves to both assist players who find they chose a poor last name and wish to fix it, and also to provide a "fix" for those who chose a last name in error before suggested dialog confirmation box was implemented.Do I think this is a pressing issue? Absolutely not. Do I think we need to give people a second chance on every decision? No way. But I do think this is *probably* something that can be done with relative ease that offers players a chance to undo a bad decision with no effect on game balance.
