<DIV>Over the past few weeks EverQuest 2 has been getting slower and slower <FONT size=1>and slower and slowerand slower and slowerand slower and slowerand slower and slowerand slower and slowerand slower and slowerand slower and slowerand slower and slowerand slower and slowerand slower and slowerand slower and slowerand slower and slowerand slower and slowerand slower and slowerand slower and slowerand slower and slowerand slower and slowerand slower and slowerand slower and slowerand slower and slowerand slower and slowerand slower and slowerand slower and slower</FONT><FONT size=4> <FONT size=1>(ok you get the point)</FONT> </FONT><FONT size=3>to the point where I can barely move around a zone without any lag. But then I decided to check why. So I did a defrag. This is what my system looked like before it finished.</FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT size=3></FONT> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV><IMG src="http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b391/Amerant/untitled.jpg"></DIV> <DIV><A href="http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b391/Amerant/untitled.jpg" target=_blank>http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b391/Amerant/untitled.jpg</A></DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>It was so fragged that it was slow. Now I am not an expert in computers, but I am sure this slows down the computer tremendously.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV>

Defragging does help yes, i wont deny that. But its not the end all, fix all people make it out to be. Defragging *usually* doesnt make that big of a difference, and fragmentation under 10% is nothing. The catch is that, the entire drive may be fragmented, but not necessarily the portion of it that has your eq files. Fragmentation is caused by moving and deleting and creating lots of files, such as tons of downloading. If your gonna be hardcore about the fragmentation thing, put eq on its on drive (or partition if you know how to do that). Thats what I have going, I have around 20gb that has nothing but games on it. I dont download or anything, so its never fragmented. The last time I defragged any of my computers was probably around a year ago, and they all run fine. Just a little tip for those who get tired of defragging. <div></div>

If EQ2 files are fragmented much at all (even if the drive itself is low fragmentation overall) EQ2 performance drops like a rock. I defrag frequently to prevent this and can REALLY tell when I forgot to do so.. <div></div>

It definately does help.  I generally defrag every few weeks, and after live updates (it seems my disk is a bit fragmented after that for some reason..could just be coincidental though). As a side anecdote, I've had some servers at work that were behaving very badly...backups failing, evers in the logs, users complaining of slowness...checked out the disk fragmentation (our defrag software's scheduled task was borked for some reason), and the disk report looked like an old 8-bit Atari video game.  Seriously.  Defragged them and haven't had any issues since. =) <div></div>

i find the most annoying part when i defragment is when i have used 36 Gigabytes...:smileywink:
