Ranged Weapon questions

I currently use cheapish throwing daggers for kiting and pulling and what not.  I was wondering what the benifit of more expensive daggers would be.  Also does it matter if it is a dagger or not?  Do all the different kind of weapons basically do the same thing? <div></div>
