View Full Version : Light vs. Medium Armor?

I was wondering what was the best wey to go. Currently I have Pristine Imbued Fulginate BP/Tae Ew Legs... everything is medium armor. I have read some posts about light armor working out better. Whats the deal. I notice that my mitigation is low compared to any heavy armor wearing players but at the same time my avoidance is not much better than theirs. It seems unbalanced. I guess what I am wondering is this:

Does the gain in your avoidance by wearing Light Armor outweigh the loss of Mitigation? Should I be looking at Imbued Augmented BP?

Any help is much appreciated!

Message Edited by Driggs on 06-07-2005 01:25 PM

When I hit 27 I switched from light armor to med. imbued chainmail and I personally will never go back. I can solo much better, I found it makes quite a noticeable difference on how much damage you can take, for me anyhow.

"When I hit 27..." Hit 50 and we'll talk again :smileyindifferent: The light rare armor has mor str on it and its much cheaper then a ebon bp, thats the difference. Because of the fact, that u won't tank anyways mitigation is totaly worthless.

I do solo quite a bit though. I wouldn't want to spend the money on the light armor and find out it was a waste of cash. I am almost lvl 47 btw. Any other opinions?

-Driggs

I am 50. I use medium armor. I do solo a bit. When you can surprise (hide and hide attack first) your oponent you can still kill it (double arrow low green mob non caster). And you can solo any solo mob easily too. I never used any light armor. Why should i use a lesser armor when i can get more than 100 in str and more than 200 in agility with my current set ? can i get 200 in str with light armor ? Whatever, i think assassin primary skill is Agility so i use everything that gives me agility. I just keep my str above 100 and that's enough.

My only concern is about armor look. I don't like the fulginate look so i use a set of brigandine coming from Melanie Everling and some Lava Brigandine. I would like some more different set of medium armor but this one is quite good for me.

So, unless they change the system to make out agility useless and kill any solo ability of the assassin, i will still use my medium armor.

I think currently there it has no real benefits to stick with medium armor if you can wear light armor instead that gives you more str, since str makes you deal more dmg while agi does not, the mitigation is not an issue here, what you can solo in melee, you can solo in very ligth armor too

at high levels any scout can keep agi over 200 and that even doesnt require the dolls or the imbued rings, so if you consider your job as damage dealer (what assassins tend to think of themselves for unknown reasosn) you better get as much str as you can, ignoring what kind of armor it is you are wearing

have to add though that this might be only valid until the combat changes in testing go live

well, i use a mix if med and light(yea i don care about looks) im going for max str since i don solo, and in raids i get more agi then i can shake a stick at, unbuffed my str is 247 and agi is 176 and in raid party str usually around 400 agi around 350 so i think go with the gear that gives max str for max dmg and get ur agi from buffs, but yes u dont have to stick to one type of armor ;p

You wouldn't be one of those assassins who get outdamaged by berserkers and bruisers huh?

I use a mix of light and medium atm (well only 2 light pieces).. it really depends on stats. I won't use a helm that gives WIS and INT over one that gives STR, just because it gives 20 more mitigation lol =). SOE says agility is your primary stat so you'll take that as a law and sod all other stats cause clearly only AGI matters, even though you get no benefit from it other than more avoidance? . Self buffed I'm at 185 str and 214 agi (too high for my taste, I overreacted with traits at lower levels ).. that's without a prismatic or fabled fat-stats armor.

Oh just to answer the OP, light armor is not better than medium. Nobody said that. You gain no additional avoidance by using light. We're just saying that light and medium aren't that far apart as far as mitigation goes (augmented light has higher than fulginate medium) which makes it viable to use when you cant afford ebon, or if it has nice stats that usually can't be gotten on a medium piece (str & sta on helm for example).

I would imagine that I should just stay with my current armor then. It wasn't cheap and it wouldn't be cheap to try to swap all my medium out for light. I will wait a while. Seems like something SOE will have to adjust eventually. It would have been nice to see a MOD post here. Thanks for all your help. I will keep my coin in my pocket!

-Driggs

Just to answer to the question why is my high damage at 2086 only : Because i never updated my skill to adept III. Plus i tend to use that skill only when it's really necessary to finish a mob (and even more carefull on Assassinate still at apprentice II). I do not try to get the highest damage ever at any time. I just prefer to do steady damage all along the fight than one big damage that could get the mob very angry at me, kill me and then let the rest of the group to kill it without my damage output.

It is just a way of play. As far i know too there are cap in str. 100 or 199 in str gives same results. You need to pass 200 to get a new bonus in damage. With groups i can easily get to 200+ in str and 300+ in agility. In solo i am around 140 in str buffed. Well unless proved otherwise, i don't see any need of changing armor.

Second answer to the one that tell me that it is not because SOE say that agility is my primary stats that i should bow to the law. It is not my fault if even if SOE said that my primary stats will be agility and that in fact i need more str to do my job correctly. I just hope they will, one day, gives us back our primary stats to what it should be.

No offense taken anyhow. I understand that there are many differents styles of play. I just wanted my troll assassin to have some high agility despite her race. I prefer the fun and the look to the raw efficacity but i also try to make a good job as an assassin. True i am sometimes owned by some berserkers (those with all their skills at adept III), never had much trouble with monks though. True too i would like better timer on our skills so i could use them without have to care of the next fight or the unwanted aggro which trigger the need of using any means to get rid of the mobs as fast as possible.

Maybe now i will try to get a set of light armor just to see if it changes things.

Message Edited by IsmeldaLasombra on 06-09-2005 07:57 AM

Do you plan to solo a lot? If not, i recommend you get a mixture of both light and medium. You should look for gear with both AGI and STR if possible. As most stated, light armor provide more STR than medium. I normally go for STR items because i'm a STR [Removed for Content] ;p

Mixture of both is a good combination. For example, cryptic pants is light armor has +11AGI +20STR, and i've yet to see any pants that are medium that are better than those.

Another example, Crown of Tarnix, light armor again with +11STR, and again i haven't found any medium helmet with that much STR. Also, Ancient Combine Glove +20AGI +12STR is by far the best medium gloves in the game.

i might be wrong, and there might be better items with more str and agi, if so please feel free to inform me ;p

At 38 I just switched from Medium Feyiron/D',orte/Ravenring (with chest and legs imbued) and Dwarven work boots over to Thicket Light armor. The stat bonuses on the thicket is great and I have to admit I love the fact that it is all black with green highlights. Makes me feel more assassin like . I admit I lost a bit of healing from the imbued but my STR jumped up 40 or 50 points off of the change and my dex increased as well...

But the look is what sold me...was only going to do 1 or 2 pieces until I saw the black....assassins need black armor...if only it was blood red highlights instead but hey, what can ya do???

Some games have armor appearance changing based on race or class. I'd really love to see medium armor look black and red on assassins, green or something on rangers etc. Possibly with differing textures as well, but just the color would do. :smileytongue:

I agree. even minor hue differences would be nice and another way to make each character unique. Maybe some type of a configure armor page that opens up with the piece in a window and various controls (like char generation) to let you change stuff around. Give you somehting to do while camping.
