I recently returned to the game after a year and a half hiatus with EoF. I still have my former main ranger on that account, and was thinking of picking her back up again. Are ranger pets still a complete waste of time? Any suggestions on how to update her gear, since I'm sure it's all laughably outdated by now. Here is her profile on EQ2 Players

http://eq2players.station.sony.com/characters/character_profile.vm?characterId=341395104

Thanks for any help in advance.

Alot has changed in the last year and a half, might be easyer to reroll your toon and start fresh, that way u can relearn the class and u will be able to collect AA from lvl 10

Well, after levelling two scouts, I can say that unless they've made changes to safe fall, I'd rather smash my thumb with a hammer than do all that cliff jumping over again. Repeatedly.

Yeah, your gear is really bad. Rerolling I think would be the best idea for you. It doesn't take long to get back to lvl 27, and not long to get your safefall up.

Clear all your hotbars, sort your Combat arts by type so you can refill your hotbars with the proper arts.Buy a quiver and fill it with tier appropriate arrows. Wince at the cost if your arrow summoning ability fails to keep up with your useage. Or use tin ones on easy fights.Make sure to use three poisons of differing colours, Caustic, fettering and gracelessness are my personal choice.Take note that one of our DoTs got changed into a root, use it to back off and get more ranged attacks in.Backshot line is the only (I think...) ability we can still cast on the run other than ranged auto attack, the same does not hold true for melee arts, some of which have a very decent range and will allow you to snare/root a mob at some distance.Take a good long look at your AA trees. The predator tree has a nice agility line which is a boon to us, opinions vary greatly on if strength or intelligence is better after.Spend 5 points in your Ranger AA pathfinding upgrade for the simple pleasure of annoying almost anybody on horseback. (that's a semi serious recommendation, I love that ability myself)I really wouldn't bother re-rolling as you'll get AA's quite fast enough and really shouldn't have too much difficulty picking up again so long as you remember the simple fact that we are truely ranged now as opposed to the old initial ranged attack followed by a melee slugfest, most mobs should only be in melee range for very short periods and that should only be while you're rooting, stuning or snaring them.

There is no need to reroll your toon. You'll probably regret it if you do. Right now if you even replace your carbonite with dexterous carbonite (not sure if its called dexeterous, I'm a tailor and thats what the leather line is called, just ask for the one that boosts STR and AGI and an armorer will help you out) you will improve your stats leaps and bounds. You can also pick up some velium jewelry. I'm not suggesting the mastercrafted stuff because you are probably broke.I went away for awhile so I was behind in AA. What happened was any little thing I did gave me a crap load of AA until I was pretty balanced with others my level. So don't worry about rerolling for AA points, you'll get half a bar just for discovering Thundermist Village again. And they changed falling so its now harder to level safe fall. Falling small distances like from a griffon tower don't even count as a fall anymore, falling from any higher causes you incredible amount of damage and you die. So if you thought leveling safe fall was hard before...

Thanks for the input. I've decided not to reroll her, and just spent the last two nights running around exploring and collecting glowies to sell and upgrade my gear. Now I am almost 28 and have 7 AAs and am not sure where to spend them. Also, I have a lot of quests left over from when I was playing before, some of which I suspect are access quests to zones that no longer require quests to access. Should I just delete all my old quests and re-get them?

Best AA tree to start is the agility for ranged crit chance, its a nice upgrade, 22% i think for a crit chance, second line i went down was int although im thinkin of respec'n for strength

lol! welcome back!I have a suggestion for you:
                            BETRAY NOW!!
Regardless, read back at least a few months in the Ranger forums and the combat discussion forums to get a feel for what has been changed. It might save you from some w. t. 1>e moments.-Smoothie Le'Clot - 70 RangerShadows & DustMistmoore

Message Edited by FluffyDestroyerofWorlds on 01-23-2007 10:31 AM

Well, I tend to favor unusual class/race combinations. I'd rather be one of the dozen or so active iksar rangers on the server than one of the 200 some odd iksar assassins.

Besides, I did the betrayal the old way, and I'm not going to have all those hours grinding out killing 500 gnolls be in vain.

So I think I'll stay ranger. EQ2i.com has a decent list of soloable quests if you want to go that route. Pretty easy to get APs by blowing through a bunch of quests.Personally, I spent my first 10 points in removing the penalty for defensive stance, then bumped pathfinding to 46%. With Jboots (which becomes pretty easy to do at 46% run speed) I run at 56% now. Some might say it is a waste of points, but I disagree. If a fight goes bad, I yell to break the encounter and am gone like a shot. It doesn't take much to get out of melee range for mobs. If they stop to cast, they are so far back they only get one spell off. That and you can outrun people on their 14 plat horses.

Thanks for the AA suggestions. I'm going down the agility line at the moment, but as soon as I hit max crit, I'll switch to working towards pathfinding. After run3 and 30+ levels with SoW on my beastlord in EQ, I feel waaaay too slow.

just to give you an idea of how easy it is to get aa points. my ranger was level 24 with 1 point on dec 17th after I quit playing him for 6 months.Today, he is lvl 50 with 51 aa points. You should be able to get aa pretty fast.
