<DIV>Ok guys I have just betrayed my 28 assassin to a ranger because playing an assassin was boring to me.  </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>The first thing I noticed is there isn't really any thing that I can use to get far enough away to actually use my range skills in combat.  I use something called impale i think and it roots them for like 4 seconds.  This gives me enough time back off and get like one range attack in then they come running up.  I then use whatever the ensnare is called for that level and it slows them down a bit so I back off and never get far enough to use a range attack.  If i try to do it while moving it gets disrupted...   I tried the crippling or wounding shot or whatever it's called but that was misleading because it didn't cripple them one bit.  In the end it was like a one on one upfront slap fest.  :smileysad:</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Can anyone give some solo tactics I should be using?  Also, on a different topic, I have all my AA in my STR line... should it be changed to the AGI line?</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Thanks.</DIV>

(Sorry, I can't remember what those attacks are called at your level.  It's the melee attack that puts you in stealth, and the high damage backstab)</font></div><p>Message Edited by Zholain on <span class=date_text>12-07-2006</span> <span class=time_text>01:09 PM</span>

Well, if you are doing PvE, this is how I do it for soloing: (And I forget the names of the abilities at your level, so just look them up if you don't know what I am talking about) Lead off with ranged attack, usually a snaring shot which will allow you to use Precise Shot and Confounding Arrow (both have quick cast times and you should be able to get them both off before the mob reaches you if you are at max distance) Next, I start my HO and usually lead off with the CA that drops mitigation, then choose any melee CA, do another HO, use the snare / slow CA, and any other melee CA, then the stun, and any other melee CA.  By this point, usually the mob is at half life (at 68 vs an even con, non-heroic anyway), and if all your CA's are down, you can hit the haste / dps buffs until they come back up and start your HO's again.  OR, if you are quick enough, after the mob is stunned you can quick step behind it, and hit your combat stealth and any backstab, but this doesn't always work and will depend on how long the mob is stunned. If you are in PvP, then follow these steps: Sneak up to the "lone" enemy at max distance, begin casting sniper shot, get interrupted by AE / Brigand / Bruiser / NPC hailing you / God, freak out as you realize the "lone" enemy is actually in a raid, evade, hide futilely behind something, run away, avoid detection, scream in frustration as the raid force bears down on you anyway, throw computer out the window and drink a beer to calm your nerves, rinse and repeat. Hope that helps! <span>:smileyvery-happy:</span> <div></div>

I solo a little differently... everytime I root/stun/PB I step back and range shot. You have to figure out which you can use in the time allotted, but I rarely miss getting off a shot. Stun is the shortest, and root is the longest. I am decked out for raids and range is my highest damage. You also don't have to step back far to get in bow range. I have even gotten to where I can do this on my carpet, by stun/root/PB on the move behind (forward for me) the mob and firing while I turn around.<div></div>

<DIV>One of the most important things as Ranger is the pull. You can do some big damage to a mob before it even reaches you. Best starters are Back Shot line or Hidden shot. If you pulled at max distance, you can get in at least 2 other bow shots. Check out what your CAs do, how much damage they do and how fast they cast. I tend to order them by casting speed.</DIV> <DIV>You may want to use your Aim buff for the pull; although short term, it gives you a great boost to damage, which will bugger up those mobs real good before they get to you. :smileyvery-happy:</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>As for when the mob is at you: Cheap Shot and Lunging line are your friend. Some prefer the backstab combos with cheap shot, some prefer backup and shoot. At your level it may be best to use the backstab combos with Cheap Shot, cause you won't have many bow shots yet. You will only be able to use bow shots with the Lunge line and you won't have enough bow shots for both Cheap Shot and Lunge.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>As Zolain said, go agi line. It's the Ranger line. I too like the end skill (Poise). Helps a lot in soloing, and is useful in combination with the Aim line; you can get off more bow shots in those 10 seconds.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Btw, Wounding Arrow reduces the mobs defense, not their movement. :smileywink: Good to use this after your initial pull shot.</DIV>

<DIV>I had a ranger up to level 28, heard all this hooplah about assassins, so I rolled one up.  I loathed it - it's darn hard to tell what's going on when you have to be in the crush of the fight all the time, and tanks are too silly to position the mob for my attacks to hit.  So, now I am betraying my assassin to be a ranger.  (Dark Elf ranger 4tw)</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>With my ranger, I was killing groups of mobs like this:</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Stealth</DIV> <DIV>Pounce</DIV> <DIV>Triple Shot</DIV> <DIV>Snare</DIV> <DIV>Zoom backward in a little circle shooting, doing CA's as they came up.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>This was at level 28, mind, so it's doable even as a baby ranger.  Mind you, always clear the little ghetto mobs first and have the bestest poisons/bow/ammo you can get.  It isn't cheap but every group I've ever joined has been in awe of my dps, so you get what you pay for.  The assassin does cost less, but goodness it's annoying in a group setting.</DIV>

<DIV>Ok thanks for all the info I respec'd to the AGI line and that gave me an additional root to use.  I can definitely say the dps difference when he was an assassin compared to when he is a ranger is sadly very dramatic, but however, playing a ranger is much more fun.  </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>One last question... is it better to use a short bow or a long bow?  Can't really see the difference except for the attribute stats.</DIV>

<P>I personally prefer a long bow which has a 35 meter range as opposed to the short bow with only a 25 meter range. The extra 10 meters range may allow you an extra bowshot when soloing  as the mob closes on you. This can mean the difference between a close fight and a multiple gold repair bill. When grouping or raiding the extra 10 meters will place you beyond most area of effect abilities, allowing you to continue raining death down upon the mob's head while you remain (relatively) unscathed. Your mileage may vary.</P><p>Message Edited by Dirty Jack Rackham on <span class=date_text>12-13-2006</span> <span class=time_text>04:52 PM</span>

Yeah, I haven't noticed if there's a difference in price for long vs short bow.  And the only difference in range is usually max range, not minimum.  So, for the money, the longbow should always be the choice imo. <div></div>
