Hi, I played a ranger for quite a long time (nearly 4 years) on EQ 1. And I tried EQ 2 at release and couldn't run it, well...now I'm back with stuffies that let me play (I hope) and I was wondering how the class plays in comparison to others. I don't mean class balance, but my friends will be a monk and a scout or necro of some sort, and I'm trying to decide if a Ranger will be beneficial to them at all. If not, bards are the other option I suppose or a druid, but really, I'm just asking you to talk about your class, sorry for the rambling, I'm rather shy about big group talking and things, so forgive I don't know if we will ever get to raids, as I imagine it will take along time, so for a casual group, that would like to raid but may never get there, Talk to me ^.^-Reise (hopefully) ^.^

A ranger is a boon to any group, but if your friends are playing a monk and a necro/scout, you may want to consider a healer, than you woun't have to worry about looking for one when you play together.

hum, well yes that would be in common with EQ 1, but I was still hoping for a little conversation about the class..I looked at the other posts and mosts were complaints that it was underpowered, or general gripes, but no one seems happy to talk about how they enjoy it or what they enjoy about it, So in a horribly formatted and completely ungramatically written way, I was asking people to boast and talk up why they enjoy it. I mean, even if you feel underpowered, you would have to love the class's basics or else you wouldn't put forth the effort to see them better. So talk to me! ^.^

A ranger would be fine as such a group member. There's no problem in terms of DPS and they have a good hate reducer to avoid peeling. However, if you look at the needs of your group, I think you need a healer more than anything else. Rangers only really bring DPS to the table, much like assassins, so I'm not sure how much you can really talk about it. You either want a damage class or not. If you do, then rangers are a good choice. For a small group with 3 people I don't think a bard or chanter would be a good option. You have to cover the basics (tank, healer, damage) before the utility classes become a good idea - if you want to be the most effective.

On the other hand, a group with a lot of damage but no healing is exciting in the sense that you either blow away encounters or you die.

Oh, well maybe I will do a ranger as an alt then, I was also a little worried about money as a ranger as a first char. I know in EQ 1 (old days) Rangers starting could have a heck of a time trying to afford gear while keeping bow skill up and things. Arrows weren't that expensive if you didn't really care about your damage, but fletching got pretty pricey toward the end of the game. I realize this is a ranger forum, but Rangers are telling me a healer is more in my interest, which would you suggest I look into?

Like the others mentioned if you plan to trio mostly someone in the group will need to play a healer class. You could go without one and still kill well but you'd have alot of down time regening HP between fights. That would get boring very fast in my opinion.

As far as my ranger goes I love playing him. I've been lucky enough to have gotten the top end items that really make rangers shine. And I've put in alot of effort to play my ranger to his full potential in raids. And since leaving my old raid guild turned that over into making him a great solo'er. I love going around solo'ing things most rangers would never consider even attempting. For me that's what makes it a challange and fun.

I have both a L70 conjuror and a L70 ranger and would say I have more fun playing my ranger. The reason being he takes alot more skill and is more challanging to play to his max potential. For the most part I see my conj as my easy mode toon. It does take skill to play him to his potential but not nearly as much from my point of view. Another class to look at if you like to play a class that can be challanging and fun is a Coercer. I have a mid 30's one now and he is simply a blast to play. Takes work but what he can do solo or bring to a group is amazing.

PS - If you want to go healer with DPS abilities you can always go Fury. They give you the best of both worlds and would work well in a three person group like you plan to play in.

Forgive my lack of knowledge, but isn't a coercer evil? They both want to be good, so I don't think that would work. Is an illusionist similar? or would those crowd control chars work well with the others even though we have no healer? Sorry if this continual posting is an annoyance to the ranger community for asking in your boards..but you brought it up! *points her fingers at you!!*

Coercer's are an evil based class but unless you're playing on a PvP server that means nothing really. Just means your home city is Freeport instead of Qeynos. At low levels you would have to travel to meet your friends but that doesn't take to much time. If you have the Kingdom of Sky expansion you can even use the teleporters to port up to KoS from the Common Lands to KoS and then port right back down to Antonica. And once you hit the 20's, which takes little time at all, you'll be fighting in Thundering Steppes or Nek Forest both of which you can buy boat tickets to very cheaply. So travel time to meet your friends is basically nil.

I haven't played and Illusionist yet but I think they would be fun also. The extra draw I had to the Coercer is they get to charm mobs and make them their slaves Nothing more fun the charming something and then making it kill for you as you watch lol.

The whole Qeynos vs Freeport is only on the PvP servers.

Talk one of your friends into playing a healer, then roll a ranger yourself!

lol Prand! that may just be the case...I think one is considering a priest now...so Is a ranger an okay starting char in this? plat farmers weren't as rampant when I started EQ, so I don't know how badly people hammer rangers on money..Edit - its actually decided, a monk, and a fury are what they will be. So does a ranger fit with that well?

Message Edited by Elunesglow on 11-07-2006 04:44 PM

Thanks so much to all of you for your help! I'll be named Reise on Antonyia Bayle if anyone wants to talk in game to the new one!

Congrats on your choice. I think a ranger will be a great fit in that trio. We're nice DPS in groups and generally more intelligent and attractive than other classes. This assumes, of course, that you choose a kerra. Just remember the golden rule: Kerra > All.

Enjoy

Monk/Fury/Ranger... perfect from a RP stance :smileyvery-happy: Rangers are expensive, need poison and arrows, but normal poisons aren't too expensive and you can summon arrows, just stockpile them :smileywink: Also, the DPS thing is a raid issue, so don't worry.

Poisons can add up, but you have some control over that, depending on the quality of poisons that you want (and your ability to cultivate good relationships with generous alchemists). But arrows weren't an issue for me til after 60, and even then my summoning kept up okay until I was raiding 2-3 times a week.

hehe I would have gone Kerran If I didnt have to be so tall! I'm only 5'2 in real life, so I don't really like being huge in games either, other than that I love the skills i have though at level 9 the monk in our group is killing my DPS, i think its because im trying to keep my bow skill up and it doesn't do any damage. Not sure why though, its 7-16 damage? i think? and it never even hits for 7 unless im using a skill. I read other topics saying other tier arrows but, the next tier is 10 so i dont see why It would be doing that

DPS in the loosest terms...being as we are still low! but still! things are dead before i get both of my CAs off even, but the bow question still stands!PS. I am Reise on Antonia if anyone wants to talk
Message Edited by Elunesglow on 11-09-2006 09:48 PM

Because monks buff their own STR, probably, and rangers do not. STR determines attack damage from your bow, melee, and combat arts. Try finding some gear to get some points in it and I think you'll find yourself hitting harder.

ohoo! strength he says! I was going for agi things when they dropped thank you And I wasn't so much worried about the DPS difference as..i knew i was doing something wrong Thank you Thank you!..and if it means anything I ended up picking rangers for the community. Even back in EQ 1 rangers were the best, and here they have come to keep their good reputation.

Just be aware that Rangering in dungeons takes a little care. It's easy to get adds if you aren't completely aware of what's around you. Imho the easiest DPS class to add to that group would have been a Wizzy/Warlock because of the much lower positional requirements - you can basically stand on top of each other (plat farmer style) in very tight spaces and not get adds

Having said that, Mirdo's been through every dungeon in the game and lived (mostly) to tell the tale.

Mirdo.

I actually considered a wizard, and made one, but it seemed EVERYONE i saw when i got to qeynos "Level 70 wizard" "Level 58 wizard" level better than you wizard" Just didn't want to be what i saw millions of others as I realize rangers are popular, they always are! but still *picks* that and robes looked kind of ugly
