View Full Version : Is chest disarm broken?

I've duo'd with my wifes ranger from 0-30 and something which has become a real annoyance to us both is her complete inability to disarm chests.  She has attempted to disarm every chest we've ever dropped and never seemed to have a problem until level 20 or so.  Since then she's failed literally every single time (which must number around 75-100 sequential failures) for the last 10 levels.  We mentioned it to another ranger we grouped with and he said he had the same problem, hadn't been able to disarm anything for weeks and his (and her) disarm skill was stuck at around 80 or so.At first I dismissed it as bad RNG luck, but now it seems more like it's an actual bug.  Is this a known issue? Thanks in advance.<div></div>

<DIV>I've never had issues with it, sounds like a streak of unlucky disarms. My disarm went up 4 point last night while I was in clefts. Granted mine is now 250, but I don't remember too many issues with it before either.</DIV>

I seem to remember chest blowing up at the lower levels in the tier.  Though that could just be a coincidence.

<DIV>At lower levels you can take some serious damage from disarming traps.  Best advice is to get your group to let you try to disarm every trap, even on the wooden chests that don't have traps, disarm them for the practice.  It's just something that you deal with at lower levels and then once you get a higher skill, like over 100 or so it doesn't ever seem to be an issue anymore.</DIV>

i haven't noticed this at all but my disarm is maxed for my level. if you have been leveling fast your skill might be falling behind.

I think this may actually be bugged.... I went out with a level 22 brigand guildmate for powerleveling and every time she tried to disarm she got the message "failed to disarm, but the trap did not go off" or something to that effect.

What chests was she trying to disarm?  Remember, not all chests are trapped now.  The small wooden chests do not have traps on them, but you can still attempt to disarm them.

I haven't noticed a problem, but my Disarm is at 300 now. At lower levels I failed to disarm more often and the trap went off (wooden chests used to be trapped, too) but I would still get skill ups.

<P>Im going to have to agree with Bongo here. Its prolly just an issue with leveling faster then your toon is getting Disarm dings. This was a common problem at EQ2s launch as there just wasnt enough chest drops. Small wood chests dont have a trap, so those would be the ones to safely ding disarm, but any chest will work. My assassin, currently 41, has fallen behind on disarm, has blown up a few ppl, but is still getting disarm dings. You just have to be careful with those master chests. Which reminds me.</P> <P>Anyoen else remember the days when "chests" were ranked in the top 10 for most kills by an NPC? Right up there with the forge!! Ahhh the good ole days.</P>

I started up a dirge the other day and am now at 20. My disarm is pretty low (I think 30?), and it sets every chest off. But I get a skill upgrade about every 2-3 chest. If I could just get the stupid casters to stop opening chest and let me build up my skills... :smileymad:

About disarming wooden chests, she actually has been.  I know it sounds strange but she's really good at remembering to disarm (much better than I used to be) and she has attempted literally every chest (wooden, treasured, legendary etc) I've seen drop.  The levelling too quickly for your skills argument makes sense but I would have thought that at some point during say 30 disarms, even with a skill of 80/120, she should have disarmed a fair amount and dinged the skill too.  If for some reason that IS the case and her skill is going to end up only being sufficient to ding off chests from mobs so low they're grey, wouldn't that pose a problem since they don't drop?I honestly think there is a good chance there's a bug here that possibly only affects new level 20-30 toons.  That's not to be taken as a slight against the game, bugs happen, I just feel bad knowing she's doing her best to disarm but is going to have to put up with all her groups turning on her because she gets them killed on traps. <img src="/smilies/9d71f0541cff0a302a0309c5079e8dee.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /><div></div>

<DIV>I am a lvl 28 Ranger and I haven't been having to much of an issue.  I was able to disarm last night, but I was also in Antonica, possible zone related?</DIV>

We have one 50ish Ranger in our guild that has the exact same issue. I'm honestly not sure what the problem is. I've been disarming every chest that drops either for me, in a group, and often in raids and even in my lowbe teen and twenty days never had an issue. Until I hit 30 I could probably count on both hands the total number of chests that went off after I disarmed. Post 30 I can count on one had the number of chest that went off after I disarmed them. Perhaps it's the EQ gods granting me luck in that area while totally hosing me in the area of getting good loot rolls /shrugs.So far as not all chests being trapped now, I realize this may be an "official" thing from SOE but personally have seen only about a twenty or so percent decrease in the number of trapped chests. And YES that includes the dink little wooden chests that my tadpole of an Illusionist sees when I'm out exploring with him.

I didn't start Gwyn till May of 2005 when I finished the froggie quest, but my first character (who I still have) was a high elf troubadour and I don't think there's a single wooden chest I didn't horribly disfigure someone in my groups attempting to disarm it. My skill went up, though! <img src="/smilies/283a16da79f3aa23fe1025c96295f04f.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /></div>

<DIV>I sorta kinda in a sick twisted way... miss those days... Yeah those lovely OOPS days when you managed to kill a member of your group cause you failed a disarm and everyone got mad cause of the shard debt! I dont so much mind that they took away the danger of dying from a wood chest, but I kinda wish they would bring back the deadly traps, even if it was only on master drops.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>A bit off topic: Deadly master chests would certainly be entertaining to watch. The servers favorite farming wizards would almost always die... /evil grin</DIV>

ooh those were the days... better yet, some [Removed for Content] opened the chests before you even got the chance of disarming, usually wiping the whole group or atleast half of em (tank etc who were still a tad low on HP <img src="/smilies/69934afc394145350659cd7add244ca9.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />)aaahh... *sigh*++Xan<div></div>

Heck I died just last weekend to a chest because some nimrod decided to open the chest while we were still low on health after killing Lord Androus.  For the love of god, let us heal before trying to disarm or open a chest, lol!  The loot will still be there in a minute, sheesh.

Well if I'm grouped with people I don't know I'll usually give them a couple times before chiming in that there is at least one person in the group who can disarm the chest so none of us have to take the HP. If it keeps happening I just leave, if people can't be bothered to wait five seconds for me to get to and disarm the chest then they A: deserve to take the HP and possibly die and B: are either to stupid or to self righteous to group with. In all likely hood they are also the kind that will try and take on an epic when they have no power and then complain because they keep getting wiped out.
