View Full Version : rangers are the worst scout class
I have a level 29 ranger and I cannot handle multiple mobs even with using my ONE aoe. For whatever reason SOE has made rangers useless and tell everyone they are fine. Sure they are fine in epic gear and only in groups but solo they are not fine.

Rangers have their problems but honestly at level 29 you really have no idea what you are talking about. Levels 25 - 40 (IMO) are tough on rangers. After level 40 things pick up again. I have both a ranger and a swashbuckler and at level 60+ they are about the same solo-wise. I cannot speak for other scout classes since I have not played them.Have a good bow, decent poison, and distance the first mob in group will be dead before it reaches you. You can then snare and "run and gun" the rest. Most of the problems with Rangers have to do with bringing something unique to a Raid, which at this time, they do not.

If you can't handle mutiple mobs at one time as a ranger, you are doing something wrong..period. To prove my point, to try playing an inquisitor then come back and complain. Rangers are an easy button, I have a lvl 26 ranger so I am not that far behind you.

Unless of course you're doing group mobs with an arrow up, but I believe most of those would be heroic anyways. Arrow up mobs used to be a rangers bane, but then they gave us a few stuns, and life became a bit easier.

Give it a few lvls more and it'll brighten up.Try to get those AA up too. Pick the point blank shot so you'll get another stun. That will help alot in solo.++Xan

Things get easier solo at 50ish when you get your trap - and bigger AE.

Oh and get the casters 1st when fighting groups. If you dont know which mobs are those, youll learn soon enough Yes and like Lorelady said, it gets MUCH easier to deal with groups in lvl 50 when ya get the Storm of Arrows and even moreso lvl 52 with the thorny trap.++Xan

You'd be more productive if you shut up and went back to buffing the DPS group. There's a reason why inquisitors are always grouped with the scouts and it's not because of your uber healing skills.:smileytongue:

Message Edited by Gareorn on 10-04-2006 05:46 AM

Wow, you mean I wasn't supposed to be able to solo to 59? Coulda fooled me.

Pre-Thorny Trap, which is pre-52, you can do the snipe and break method of taking down groups, if there's room. I did this often as a baby ranger in Antonica to finish quests needing sabretooth warlocks or runecasters. You always want to take the caster mob out first, and you should spend some time watching spells that are cast to figure out which one that is. Then you want to target the healer.

The snipe and break method is basically snipe one mob, break, run like hell until they give up, then go back, rinse and repeat. It doesn't work very well in Splitpaw, but dungeons are not our forte, at least ones that have zero room to room like SP and without Thorny Trap to keep things rooted while we plink them with arrows.

But I find our solo abilities work just fine. I can get a mob nearly dead before it's even to me, or dying at my feet. Solo mobs, mind you, but then that's why I'm a soloer, to kill solo mobs.

Hehe, I remember level 29. Sure things seem bleak and like there is no relief in sight...but thats just the MAN trying to keep you down! Make you quit on your ranger....so you dont ever realize how great we really are!

Seriously, at 29 things are still a bit rough....at around level 35 pick up the Bloodlines ca called Honed Reflexes...that helps a little giving you a nice haste buff. But until then, you just have to find your limits.

Warlocks can handle groups....do you think wizards handle them without problems? I think they have their share of problems like rangers.

Every class has its weakness' which early in the char.'s life are much more apparent than later on.

After picking up thorny trap my life solo'ing groups got much easier...but even before that...I always felt as though it were easier and easier the higher I got in level. And for those that don't know me...I don't really raid...I dont do much more than the occassional groups and my gear is only uber if you compare it to when I got off the island.

I have adept III's but...with how rare the loams seem to be...I havent had them long. Its all about perseverence and trying new tactics compared to the old ones that don't seem to work.

Good Luck and hope you find the right class for you if rangers just dont work out.

this might be news to some but not all classes are equally able to kill mobs or groups of mobs. some classes are better at solo mobs and some are better at groups of mobs. some are better at neither. if every class were equally able to solo both single and groups of mobs they we would only have 1 class. no class is the best at everything.
I'm going to be patient and play by way through the ranger class. This class was my first love in EQ1 and now in EQ2 I will play it out and play smarter not harder. Thank you all for those who had taken the time to politely inform on how to play the class better.

As a 31 ranger I have been soloing groups for a while, and in general find blue heroic encounters more fun than yellow solo encounters. With the blue heroic encounters if I make a mistake I die (or evac), with yellow solo encounters it often comes down to how many misses/parries/interrupts the RNG throws my way.

Buy a good round shield. Buy a lambent imbued chain tunic. Buy stamina imbued rings. Buy healing potions and put them on your hot bar. Use defensive stance. Push avoidance as high as possible. Open with your big nuke, not your AoE: group encounters become much easier as you reduce their numbers, so try to drop one on your opening volley (I try to open with Hidden Shot then Wounding Arrow). Make sure evac is up and ready. Kill the healers first if possible. Practice your cheapshot/backstab to steal/backstab routine (I like Shadowflame because you can also be flanking if the MOB is starting to turn). Practice your thrust to root/jump back/archery CA routine (If there are interrupts I use the fast casting CA's like Double Shot and Trick Shot, if not I use Triple Shot and Wounding arrow). Stick to groups out in the open to minimize adds.

Where there is room to dance, Death (still) reigns on fletched wing.

That is boul... Rangers are the 2nd bested DPS class scout.Ya and apperantly you are doing somthing wrong. Either that or you have S***** armor and everthing. When you get like Storm Of Arrows or Rain Of Arrows you can almost take every enemy down to half health.

A assassin will maintain 20-30% more dps than a ranger till the ranger gets two of the rarest bows in the game, and a rouge can do the same to more dps with more debuffs.. And I am not rating bards on damage - there util, so right now we are indeed in last place out of 4.

Firstly I state the obvious by saying bards solo far worse than rangers.

Also, while rangers are quite weak in some situations, I remind you that we still retain some ability to kite, and while that is of course situational, it is our greatest strength when it applies.

My dirge can farm blues non stop and the ranger has to stop every few mobs. It just a bit longer to kill as a dirge. Don't get me started on raid DPS though I don't think any scout class should be 1/5 the dps of a fighter class. Rangers in general have huge issues. Class balance isn't about having to max out your aa's and have two of the most rare bows in the game. And I have another ranger that is level 37 on a PvP server so I feel PvP pain too. Why do I keep playing rangers? Because I'm hoping that one day someone at sony might accidently fix them for an expansion or two before we get another nerf bat.
