View Full Version : How do rangers fare in pvp?

I recently started playing on a PVP server, and I really always enjoyed playing the Ranger. I enjoy the swashbuckler also, but to me they weren't that exciting. Just melee and never do anything else always seemed a little repetitive. So I enjoyed the aspects of the ranger, melee and bow skills plus having "fun" pets and what not. But I heard that rangers suck in pvp. Is this true? What exactly should I expect if I played a ranger on a pvp server. I don't want a ranger/swashie comparison, because I heard swashies are awesome in pvp, I just want to know how is the ranger altogether. I don't want to play a gimped class. Any info that you can give me will be greatly appreciated, thanks

Probably have better luck with an answer if you asked this in the pvp forums to be honest. I believe there are a lot of rangers on the pvp servers so they can't be that bad but I don't know for sure.

how do we fare in PvP...I can give you some observations

solo: at low levels we are semi-overpowered, especially if you can get the Stormfire bow as soon as you can use it and adept 3 spells...the problem now at low levels on the Nagafen PvP server is that 80% of lvl 25-46 players are "twinks". You are going to have a very hard time leveling up as you are constantly evading groups of twinked-out brigands. Being sneaky is a requirement. You need to be able to go undetected and strike first. I'd say roughly 90% of the time I get the first strike I can kill most players. Watch for "out of combat" healing as it's almost impossible to take down the fabled healers. Use all of your poisons, stack three. You'll want to use the one that slows, and the damage posion for sure. Sometimes, depending on who we're fighting, I use the one that sucks mana and stay on the healers. It's a ton of fun to ambush a full group, kill the cloths and evac away...you'll love that. What's horrible is how fast you're going to die in melee range with almost every class....beware of Brigs and SKs!

group: you hook up with some guys who know their roles in PvP and you're almost unstopable. Get a tank who actually taunts and a few healers to keep him up. You'll be able to stand at range and bomb away. Use your de-aggro skills to clear target often (when someone gets up in your face) and move around alot. If you have a tank that doesn't taunt then you'll be killed very fast in most group situations. Best to just stay undetected and ambush the stragglers.

all in all, it's a fun class...you'll need to have decent gear and use your temp offensive buffs to really hit hard...be sneaky and strike first
