Hi All,

Ive read the Faqs and guides for rangers but I am still a little lost.

As a newbie range from 1-20 - how should I be killing mobs? Use a bow or melee them? half and half maybe?.

I would also like to know if maintaining rangers is expensive i.e the use of arrows per hunt.

It would be great to get some insight into the ranger class from the experienced players.

Thank you

about lvl 3 or 4 you get backshot and double. grab some decent armor ( player crafter will do ) and a bow and arrows,

Backshot or double attack ( dont forget to use poison ) from max range. when mob is close you can use cheap shot , step one step forward so your in back of em and then hit you backstab attack ( forget name ) if he not dead yet do it again til he is. Most mobs you prob will get to yellow before they even touch you.

Welcome to ranger-rama!

How to kill mobs from 1-20. Initially your melee attacks will be more powerful then your bow shots. This will change as you level upthru your 20's and get more bow attacks. Poisons! use em. I'm not sure which ones are avaliable at your level, but player made ones are generally better then store bought. If there is a slow poison or debuffs I'd recommend those, as well.

Get the best gear you can quest or afford. Our primary stat is agility, affecting our power pool. But I would recommend working on strength first, since it directly affects our damage. Look on the broker and see what weapons and gear are for sale, then look them up on ogames.com Many times a simple quest is needed for some nice gear, and that site will tell you about them.

Soloing, you need to practice and practice the Dirty Tricks - stealth shot - backstab move. It'll be your bread and butter for a while to come. Its pretty easy once you get it down. Stun, move over or thru, and hit and hit again. You can also kite if you have enough room and there arent any aggressive mobs around. Run backwards while shooting arrows at the mob, occasionaly stopping to melee him. Good solo spots are the newbie zonbes like the peat bog, oakmyst forest, etc. Also Antonica has some good spots right outside the gates. Watch out for the gnolls just on the other side of the bridge from the lighthouse! They killed me so mush as a newb that now I kill them whenever I pass by, just out of spite.

When grouping its a good idea to mix up ranged and melee. Always fight from behind the mob, so you can get your back attacks in. Hitting Evade every now and then helps keep your aggro down, and makes the tanks job easier. It also can keep you alive if the mob turns on you. If it does, hit evade and run to the tank! Occasionaly drop back to ranged distance and pop a few arrows into the mob. This will help elevate your ranged skill for when you need it at later levels. Good places to group are also in Antonica. The groups of gnolls east of the griffon tower offer great exp for a group, as do the rotstuffed scarecrows near the TS gate when you are 15+

costs... No much at your level. You'll get an arrow summoning art later on, but for now just use the 1cp tin arrows from the vendor. Poisons can be expensive, depending on your finances. It might be a good idea to tradeskill to get some speding plat for later.

enjoy your ranger, and I;m sure wiser heads can offer more insight!

Where is Kaeros? I thought he was supposed to greet new Rangers...Well more on that later. :smileyhappy: Some good suggestions in this thread. The only thing I can add, is that by level 30 you will have far more bow attacks available, and will begin to rely on the bow much more. For now, you can get a decent quested bow in the Eldar Grove from the NPC named Gregor. Up to level 20 you will be focusing mostly on melee though. This is actually a good thing to practice for those times you will need to melee later on. Antonica definitely has plenty of good places and quests for you to practice your skills Explore the zone and see what you can find. You'll notice a few posters on the Ranger boards who post more frequently. Kaeros (Jay42) and Catareina (Zholain) are the two I enjoy reading the most, there are plenty of others. Usually they have good insights into how to play your Ranger.Best of luck. :smileyhappy:

Message Edited by KnightOfTheWord on 08-24-2006 05:19 PM

Greetings! Welcome to one of the more challenging but ultimately very fun classes in the game I think some good advice has been given in this thread, especially about the Gregor's bow quest. I used that bow for quite a while in my younger days. To correct a previous poster, one tactic you want to master is the Cheap Shot - stealth shot - backstab attack, not Dirty Tricks. Dirty Tricks is something entirely different. Cheap Shot, if you're a solo ranger like me, is going to be your bread and button. This gives you a 4 second stun against any mob that doesn't have arrows. You can do quite a bit in 4 seconds (although not as much as the 6 seconds it used to be). We also have a melee attack line with a 4 second root and you can use this to great effect either to get behind for melee backstab attacks or to back up and use a ranged CA. Also, don't forget that you always have ranged auto-attack at your disposal and you should try to keep this handy to use when you're waiting for CAs to refresh. All I can really suggest is to take a look at all your skills and try them out so you can get a feel for what everything does. Try it on mobs that are fairly easy to kill, if not grey, so you can get the tactics for your skills down pat. Then you'll be ready for tougher guys.

Welcome.

Rangers are great fun imho.

With that said, Prandtl had some good advice there for you concerning strategy....except he called Cheap Shot (our stun move) Dirty Tricks (our debuff).

But just substitute Cheap Shot for Dirty Tricks and you are good.

Another sequence for that is to use your stealthing rear attack to set you up for your stealthed rear attack....sometimes getting a ranged stealthed attack off can be difficult due to location and adds in the area.

Poisons are a great addition to our damage and can give you a much needed advantage in a fight.

Use your stances wisely, upgrade them when you are able to. Offensive is a great solo'ing stance.

Defensive is a good fall back option...if you just need to squeeze out a little more damage but are almost dead.

Keep your skills maxed! Ranged maxed, piercing maxed, slashing maxed....otherwise you will see a tremendous drop in damage. Need to get that ranged skill up? Go shoot some fish in a pond from land....you will go up in no time.

One last bit of advice, always try to start at max ranged with your heavy hitter, and unleashing whatever volley you are able.

Good Luck, Happy hunting, and I hope you enjoy your experiences in Norrath no matter what you play.
