View Full Version : I was a templar

I played a templar for a long time. I would like to believe I was pretty good at it. When plying her I always felt like I had the opportunity to change the outcome of any encounter to our favor. Be it a timely heal, a quick no death cast, or just plain healing my a** off.

I had accomplished pretty much everything available when I decided to start an alt. I selected a ranger. It was one of the most fun characters to play around. Until I began to raid with him, I just didn’t have that same feeling. So I started to look for a new alt…

I considered Sorcerers. Great group buffs, roots, and feeds. Pumping the tank a little juice at the right time or rooting a set of adds could really effect the outcome of an encounter.

I considered Illusionists. Great buffs and Mezzes. I know of no other class that is absolutely required to do some encounters. Or so under appriciated for so long.

I considered Summoners. Great Buffs, Pets and Utility. From rezzing the dead, to passing out mana items, to sacrificing pets these could really turn the tide.

I didn’t consider another Healer. All healers are great and healing can make or break a raid alone. Yet they also bring so many intangibles that they are amazing.

I considered Rogues. Debuffs. Anyone who has raided with Brigands and Swashies knows just how much their properly times abilities does for the whole raid.

I considered Bards. Buffs. Many bards use the saying “Making others look good since …” and it’s completely true. Utility to spare.

I considered Fighters. Tanking, Offtanking, Utility. A timely intercept, grabbing spawns/adds, FD can all swing an encounter to the positive.

I reconsidered Predators. Hate Xfer. Wow in a mana draining encounter that could really be useful but wait that’s only Assassins. Not a lot but at least its something. Rangers have to have something, right? That little something that during the course of an encounter can change the outcome through its sue, right?

That’s why I switched to my Zerker. That’s what I would like the dev’s to consider when looking at the class. That’s what it is missing the ability to swing an encounter. Everyone is DPS. In a raid you also need a purpose.

I was a Ranger, and i wish i could have happily stayed one.

Bellabutton 70 Templar (retired)

Erique 70 Ranger (retired)

Cruckin 70 Berserker

i've swung an encounter tons of times. be it from picking off an add before it killed the cleric or taking over when the tank went down. people downplay rangers all the time now but it's not that the class is lacking it's that people dont know what to do with the class.

We do have a hate transfer, accept its used in a diffrent method - and can be used outside of group but it can only be used 1/3 of the fight.. For every 30 seconds, we shoot a mob with our confounding arrow, the arrow hits the mob and lands a buff on the mob.. The mob hits the tank, the tank has 10 seconds of 30% extra hate while this is in use.

Confounding isn't a hate transfer at all. It is a temporary hate buff.

Hate transfer would mean actually transferring aggro like the assassin does, or amends does.

We debuff the mobs heat resistances and defense also on top of the hate buff. Plus have the hawk that siphons hate from all non fighter type classes in your group.

It looks like you are testing out just the right class for you. I can see that you've leveled both your Templar & Ranger to 70. No one can fault you for being unhappy, you've given each class a chance and found both lacking in some way. The only counterpoint I can think of is that if you ever really get as unhappy with your Berserker, you might want to hang in there and see if the class can get changed in someway you would consider making it fun again. The only reason I'd say this, is that it's generally agreed right now that the major issue with Rangers (for example) exists primarily in the high end raiding situation, and even then it's only a major problem for the top raiding guilds. I'm assuming this is where you ended up with your Ranger. Rangers solo and group just fine...but that's my opinion. None of this was intended as a flame...just my comments. :smileyhappy:Anyway, best of luck to ya in your chosen class. :smileyhappy:

the hate increases with whoever the mob has targeted when the CA goes off, whether it be a tank, dps, or healer

Confounding Arrow increases the hate gain of the target of the mob by 30% for a limited duration.

But it's not like swashie's don't get the same ability.

Yeah, confounding arrow causes the mob to gain more hate with his target. It doesnt matter who the target is.

The best use, err.. most fun use for confounding arrow is to keep the mob targeted, then when you see the mob aggro the wizzy right after the blue ice nova ball...

Ya just got to get it off before the tank taunts though. No one will know you did it.

And don't tell me I'm mean. I've died at the hands of a swashbuckler with a sense of humor many times. I hate it when he puts his aggro transfer on me, but it's still funny.

Although we have strayed off topic a bit, my whole point was I can't come up with a RAID encounter where a ranger will swing the encounter (to the positive lol) with something truely unique.

FiftyK wrote:

Although we have strayed off topic a bit, my whole point was I can't come up with a RAID encounter where a ranger will swing the encounter (to the positive lol) with something truely unique.

On that note, I can't come up with a raid encounter that absolutely requires any particular class for a win. There are some that require one or the other of a certain main class, like either a paladin or sk, but none come to mind that depend solely on one in particular. We have all but SK represented in our guild, and I don't think there's any single class being absent is ever gonna make us say "darn, we can't kill <raidmob> without <insertclass>, let's go home. Any mob currently in the game can be tanked by probably any fighter class, any 5 of the 6 healer classes can keep that tank up, any combination of dps classes will eventually kill any mob that can be killed, etc.( so long as you don't take 18 wizards to an elemental immune mob or something).I know that's not exactly the same topic, but pretty close. I guess more specific would be: I can't come up with a RAID encounter where an Assassin will swing the encounter (to the positive lol) with something truely unique. Anything an assassin can do someone else can do also, in just the same way it has been described about rangers.

Assassins (and Swashies) can very easily swing an encounter to the positive with the hate transfer. Fitzpizzle is a great example of this type encounter as is any other massive manadraining encounter. Yes there are two classes that have the ability so it is not unique only to one of them but it is unique in that they are the only classes that provide that functionality. You also cant tell me that an enchanter isn't required for other encounters. In my original post i group many classes together because any one of them would do the trick. I just can't find an ability Rangers have to add them to any of these.

Second Dawn is a high end guild so you have a wide base of knowledge, on any raid encounter have you ever truely provided anything that would make you feel "OMG I am so glad we had a ranger here?"

The ranger class has NEVER been teh "OMG ITS GOOD TO HAVE A RANGER" in a party.

It was "OMG YOU MAKE AWESOME DMG!" for a while thou.

Reason is that we simply dont have anything besides our DPS to contribute to the party... Oh and maybe the sheer happines of other player that they are allowed to group with such an elite class as us

I still love to play my ranger, after a long break its kinda fun to learn to play again...
Is the mob toughness increased btw, or do i just suck in melee? I feel i get dispatched quite quickly by eg. blue ^ solo mob if im not careful

++Xan
