I know people who don't play rangers think we whine and moan (I myself think all of it is fully justified) So I thought I would contriibute with a negative aspect of the ranger class that I havent seen brought up before (and no I didnt search the forums)Range issues on Huge/enourmous mobs
It's not something you do every day but every so often u fight a mob that is so big that it can be hard to find out where to position in order to be in our classes "Sweetspot" and still be in range of cures, heals etc...My usual MO on raids is go stand where the casters are (usually max range or most possible) then work out whether u can pump back and forth to do some close range stuff or if short AEs are to hot to handle and stay back. What I have experienced with this as a major nuisance is that when you fight the REALLY big (size) raid mobs like Tarinax or even good ol' Darrathar or other slightly smaller dragons (Gorenaire etc) as a ranger I have to move EXTREMELY far back for the "Too Close" warning to go away. When i stand where the wizzys are they have no problems at all finger-wiggling away happy as can be, while i must do a poor assassin impersonation (May the gods have mercy on my soul...)In other words all i can do is the up-close stuff that leaves me with a dps rating lower than the Paladin.....:smileymad: (No offense Lup if you read this hehe)This makes for an extreeemely boring and frustrating fight where i feel much less than useful....It was actually after an experience like this (Tarinax) that I first really realised why some raid guilds fire their rangers and hire some brigs to do the job right. It [Removed for Content] me off completely and spoiled my whole night in DTbtw: main reason casters/me had to stay close was fear of mob turns on mem-whipes/aggro instabillity - I have experienced this problem in a lesser degree in situations where the Zone infrastructure was simply too small for me to find a good spot and not be "Too CLose" to the dragons big [expletive haxx0red by Raijinn]

Message Edited by schlamo on 07-13-2006 12:58 PM

Yes, I also find this annoying/broken/frustrating. You can stand 35m away from the mob but it still thinks you're in melee range. I think it's so melee can hit it just about anywhere but it screws up those of us who have many minimum distance arts, like Rangers.

Some of the very large mobs, I have to stand halfway across the zone it seems.

I'll give an easy non-raid example. The named Enmity of Norr'Yara in POA is large. I have to stand about 50m away to be at *minimum* ranged distance. That is just BS.

Message Edited by Xney on 07-13-2006 03:02 PM

I have to agree. We did Drathar a few weeks ago, and I had to stand so far away that only my and another rangers damage were even showing up on our parses! We were maybe 10m past his tail. My view of the fight was confined to lots of shadowed flashes and explosions and a view of a dragons butt.

weeeeeeee thats why i spent all that money on that graphics card!

Ultimately, I agree, but just to note, Tarinax is not that hard to use ranged CAs on. But, for whatever reason, alot of people (presumably) don't. I did Tarinax just last Sunday for my first time, having switched to second shift, my hours do not usually coincide with my guilds, so it was a new experience for me. One of the first things a fellow guild Ranger told me was that I cannot use ranged CAs on him (and I must admit, he is huge), but after very minimal effort, I found that I could, and that it was more annoying when people pulled aggro than slightly moving to remain in ranged/melee range. Granted, I won't complain if they make it even less of a hassle. On the other hand, Venekor I am not so sure about. I was told he has an ability that knocks back, and there are a fair number of giant statue things, I have not tried using Ranged on him yet, as Venekor is not that hard, but non the less, I did not want to risk adds on one of the few raids I could attend. Same thing with that Essence of Fear thing in Lyceum, it seems to have an awfully large 2m distance to range it.The absolutely worst mob I can think of right now is a heroic.. in PoA there is this white ghost mob that looks like the Spirit of the Stag from Everfrost. I simply cannot believe how far I have to be from that critter to shoot an arrow at it. Simply astounding.Merkades, 70th Ranger.Siege, Najena.

I had the same problem the other night with the Enmity.

Since our group was roaming round that area for Claymore updates we kept popping up to kill him whenever he appeared on track. As we didn't want to lose our camp spot down below, we didn't bother clearing round - I was able to pull him from miles away with SoA (it does have a use after all) then use Surveillance. He'd go straight for the Paladin and we were away. Yay. But could I get a range on the guy? No matter where I stood, all I could get was melee. Over the other side of the room... Nothing. Gave up in the end and just poked him to death with a stick.

Emnity in PoA !! Perfect example! Forgot about that one thxBy the way want to add that I'm not writing this because I want mobs smaller....I just want to be able to hit them with ranged without travelling halfway across the realm. And i harbor no illusions that any1 from the DEV team is reading this heheAnd another thing ..I'm aware that u can back up and get shot in on Tarinax easily enuff. But my raid leader would break my bow in half if i turned the big guy on the rest of the raid on a memwhipe, and had to run miles back towards MT :smileyindifferent:

I don't know if it has to do with the size of the mob. Because that drakota in trembling lagoon (feerott) is not big at all, and I have to be a country mile away from it to hit it with ranged, just like that Stag in PoA. I can't remember the drakota's name but it's one of the three needed for the prismatic quest.

Yeah! That's Dythra, the Gloombringer. I just recently helped on a F&I raid with my main, and I was highly obnoxed by how far away I had to stand for a little peon of a drakota. I'm used to it (don't like it, but I'm used to it) on the large mobs like real dragons, but this was just ridiculous.

Hey, paying for DPS (ammo), dealing with min range, sacrificing all utility...these are all prices we pay for our l33t DPS!

Merkades,

I think the main reason some guilds don't like ranged on Tarinax is agro control on memwipes. If he agroes you and turns, it can expose the raid to his frontal.

Mirdo.

@Mirdo,You are, of course, right. However, if it is dealing with memwipes, then your chance to be the one he aggros next is just as likely if you are not ranging him, the only real issue is to be close enough that you do not have him move out of the tanks taunt area. So long as that happens, it is the same as if you were with the rest of the DPS, except now you are not doing sub par DPS (in so much as I can use that term lol).Sans aggro wipe... it is really hard for me to pull aggro usually. I have a master Primal Agility which decreases the hate gain by 41%, coupled with T1.5/T2 (depending on who you count as T2...) DPS, I rarely pull aggro it seems. And lastly, but most importantly, my guild trusts me.Merkades, 70th Ranger.Siege, Najena.
