Hello all,

I have just created a new ranger alt and have been weighing my options for a crafting class for her.

Do I go woodworker so I can make my own bows and arrows?

Do I go alchemist to make my own poisons?

Or do I go Jeweller to make my own jewelry and Adept III scrolls?

Also, my little ranger is only level 11 atm and I'm having difficulty soloing with her. I've already realised that melee is my friend this low level and I won't shine with my bow until later but I find myself regularly dying to blues, especially if there are 2 or more (for example, ending parts of Oakmyst and Forest Ruins quests with 2 or 3 grouped mobs). Any suggestions to make my combat go more smoothly?

Finally. I know we get dual wield at level 1. Is it best to start off dual wielding straight away? Or is it better to switch out between slashing and piercing, keeping both skills high until better dual wield weapons become available?

Thanks in advance for any replies and advise. :smileyhappy:

Aldariel - young but eager ranger!

I can't speak to the tradeskill choice, but others here can address that quite well.

I would recommend dual wielding now, and try and equip both a piercing and a slashing weapon at the same time. That way both should progress nicely as you level. Also, find a decent bow so you can keep your ranged ability maxed out as well. The Gregors Old Bow quest in Eldar Grove is a good option at your level.

Soloing techniqes... Its been so long since I was 11, but i remember that grouped mobs were tough. Use dirty tricks as much as possible to keep mobs stunned, and equip a poison or 3!!

good luck and happy hunting

Do like i did, make an alt to do each! My ranger is a provisioner, I could not tell you why I did that. If you do a tradeskill on your ranger I would have to suggest the scholar route (alchemist or sage). It is generally easier to level up there and as a wood worker you can make yourself about 6 bows that would work. And there are dropped bows that are better than those. arrow making even with the changes are not worthwhile. I have a 50 woodworker too so I knows of what I speak!

At least as a provisioner I dont havbe to pay the outrageous prices most provs are asking for decent food/drink. Plus I use all that I make so I am not losing money.

Dual wield from day one. Some people say we get a defensive stance but all I can ever find is my offensive stance /grin .

Message Edited by USAFJeeper on 07-05-2006 06:17 PM

Thank you for the advice. :smileyhappy:

As for the dual wield. I have been trying to find a dual wield pair of piercing and slashing but haven't had any lucky on the broker on my server. :smileysad:

Any suggestion on low level dual wield weapons that will suit for a few levels? I'll probably need to find a weaponsmith to make them but should be able to provide raws. :smileyhappy:

Prandtl - Thank you for the advice on the bow quest. :smileyhappy: I will look into that one!

Madigan - My druid is already a provisioner so have that covered. :smileyhappy: I had heard the same thing elsewhere about woodworker not really being worth the trouble. :smileysad: That's a shame really.. I remember how much fun it was to fletch my own bows and arrows in EQLive. Thought Jeweller may be good, but wasn't sure if it would be more beneficial to make my own Adept III's or my own poisons as an alchemist. Thank you for your input! :smileyhappy:

Thank you both for the help and I hope I can get the hang of things because I really think this will be a truly enjoyable class to play! :smileyhappy:

Message Edited by Dawnmeadow on 07-05-2006 05:36 PM

What server? If you're on unrest, I'll hook you up with a couple. When I was a noob ranger I went into the blacksmith shop in Willow Wood and bought regular daggers from the NPC merchant there. They were ok until I could afford something else. only cost me a few silver each, too.

Oops! Didn't even think to mention that! LOL I'm on Antonia Bayle :smileyhappy:

Might have to have a look at blacksmith if I can't find anyone to make something better.

:smileyhappy:

Yeah, I used those two daggers until I could replace them with quest items. Actually, I think I bought a dagger and a short sword from the same guy so I could raise both piercing and slashing. They're not great weapons, but they're a good start.

Jewelry is probably your best option. I would have said poisons in the old day but there are plenty of cheap crafted poisons now.

You can woodwork your own bows, but the problem is arrows are not any cheaper when you craft them than the vendor ones. It does make it easier to level up your woodworker because you'll actually use those arrows.

You'll have a lot more fun in a group as a ranger, try a duo or a trio, too. Duoing with a tank or another scout should be fairly productive. The best xp is from very good groups 4+ members.

around level 10 there are pristined imbued iron weapons i recommend getting atleast one of these they are not hard to make at all(like 15 weaponsmith required to make all the different weapons) they have 2-7 peircing damage, 1agi and str(?) and a 5% proc of 31-57 ish. around level 15+ many people go to FMG or firemyst gully go there and do the quest for a good undead procing weapon.
