I've just started playing EQ2 again, after the new update.So i wonder if i should start with a new character, was thinking a ranger, heard much good about the class.Some questions:How is the Ranger at sololing?If you compare the dmg with other classes how is the ranger doing?Is the ranger any good/use in groups?And what do you like and dislike about the class?Thanks in advance =)

Thanks for the answere so quick =)If there is something i hate about mmorpgs, its the choosing of what i want to play as, it can take so long before i decide Anyway feel free to come with more opinions =)

Yah, i usually hate that too. I however always have to play some melee agressive class. So, i made a ranger and rolled a berserker alt later on... hehe.

I cant play any support classes like illusionists or healers... Just not for me

++Xan

Yes i don't like to be healer kind of types either, i usally choose characters who can deal some dmg or is tanking.So atm the classes i'am considering the most is Shadowknight(have got any feedback yet on that class forum so i'am a little unsure), Necromacner and Ranger.

Well, SK:s are basically evil paladins. I think they also have wards and "heals" (lifetaps or sumthing like that iirc).

Necros also have a heal so they can keep the pet alive, they also make quite good DPS. So, not a bad class to play i would say. It has maybe more flexibility in solo play than ranger, but if you'd gonna group most of the time, i'd maybe suggest the ranger... shrug.

You'll have to test em out yourselves. Re-rolling after, say 25 lvls, isnt that bad, since it doesnt take that much time to play chars to lvl 25.(and you will get some feeling of your class by then i assume, althou eg. ranger is a quite late blooming class, i'd say you'd have to play one closer to 30, maybe 35 until ya get the "most" of it)

++Xan

Yea i understand, and thanks a lot for your replys they are really helping making my choice a little bit easier.I'll try out what you said, taking the classes into a bit higher lvls so i get the feeling and see =)And again don't stop with the replys, the more the better

Yea i've asked in a lot of the class forums, the classes that i found most enjoying have i asked in Anyway now i've pinned it down to, Ranger, Monk and Necromancer.I'am playing a Monk atm and its very cool class, its just something with using your fists in combat that i think is really cool, like that kind of combat style

The monk/bruisers are very nice. I like that they can hold on their own, yet they are DPS fighters.++Xan

I've soloed pretty much my ranger's lifetime. I'm a slow leveler, preferring to explore and quest, but I can hold my own in a fight even with a 3 up green heroic now with CAs I've attained at this level. I think it's a great class. I love having to plot my points of attack to avoid aggro from adds and to position myself in just the right spot to fire off my ranged CAs to the best effect. I do fine when I do group, bringing DPS as I should, although it's really easy to steal aggro if you aren't careful Oh, one thing I love is jumping off things and taking no damage while my berserker guildmate goes into the orange or red doing the same. Never follow the ranger, just like you never followed the monk back in EQ1.

Message Edited by TaleraRis on 02-06-200610:29 PM

Ranger's and Monk's both get Safefall while Necro's don't. You have no idea how many times I've killed my poor little Conjuror recklessly jumping off stuff lol. Bruiser's also get Safefall and are the evil counterpart to Monks. All are fun classes in my opinion.

If you haven't run into dust devils in sinking sands and get thrown a zillion feet into the air to land unharmed, I highly recommend it. Thats a hoot!

Compared to the monk, how is the solo ability to the ranger?And DPS, between a Monk and a Ranger which can take down a mobs fastest?

ToxicMan wrote:Compared to the monk, how is the solo ability to the ranger?And DPS, between a Monk and a Ranger which can take down a mobs fastest?

For me (43 Monk & 32 Ranger) right now, the ranger blows away the monk for soloability. With good luck on poison proc/stance proc, I 99% of all mobs are low orange/red to me before they even close into melee range. At 32, I'm in Zek doing the 33^ or 34^ orcs.

My monk still solo's very well, and you can't beat Feign Death when things go bad. On a normal fight (just by memory of course) I would say that:

Ranger fight normally lasts from 1 sec to say 30 sec depending on if you get lucky on the poison/proc damage or not. If you don't get lucky or get an add or whatever reason, when a MOB starts hitting you, things can get touch and go pretty quickly

Monk is more consistant with fights normall lasting about 20-25 sec. I can use all my CA's (30 sec recast on most) and I'm done with the fight before the first one is ready again most of the time.

Without a doubt, Monks do take damage MUCH better, even in the leather armor. I normally tank in a trio of Monk, Mystic, Conj. and we can rock things pretty good. But that same group is wanting me to level my Ranger up so he can go out with them, too.

Truthfully, I don't know if you could go wrong with either choice for soloing or grouping.

My best response I can give to how soloable the ranger is is very solable and mediochre soloability. If you study these boards and learn about poisons and procs with good strategy you can do amazing feats. Right out of the gate not knowing these strategies we are avererage.

Dps is also simular to the above paragraph. This one is directly related to how big your virtual wallet is as good poisons and bows will cost $$.

I think we solo just fine, although when there are multiples it gets edgy. I'm in Feerrott now and when I get those surprise groups of like 6 lizards, it's an unpleasant situation. They're 2 arrows down and blue to me, and I can kill the first right away, but having that many beating on me at once in melee sends me down pretty quickly.

Against a single mob we rock. I can beat on 3 arrow up greens all day. Managed to finish Ian's quest with mighty griffons myself when they were still exp giving greens.

Granted, higher level rangers can handle a lot more. Plus I'm in the process of upgrading gear and spells since I'm hitting 40 very soon. But I have no problem soloing. Zek has been excellent for me, with nothing but the rare Epicx2 or the sirens anymore than ^ and most are single mobs with no arrows or groups with 2 or 3 down arrows.

We also lack in close quarters. I don't do Splitpaw very well because I can't back up or move around to use CAs. Out in the open, we excel.
