View Full Version : Losing interest?

Hey compadres,

So I logged in last night for the first time in about two weeks, and I logged out about an hour later. I did some harvesting, finished a writ, chatted with friends and guildmates, tried to get in to two different Poet's groups, then just got bored and logged out.

There are a number of factors at work here - my sweetheart isn't playing for another week b/c her PC died, I've had a nasty sinus infection for a week so I have zero energy, I was travelling for New Year's, the guild isn't as active right now while ppl are away for the holidays, etc - but overall I'm just finding myself getting easily bored in EQ2. I still love my class and my character, but I just can't seem to get fired up about doing much lately. I expected this to set in once I hit 60 or so (I'm 59.5 but close enough), but I guess I'm looking for ideas about getting re-engaged. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be much to do besides raiding, and the guild is stuck in a rut as far as raids are concerned. We've been working on Prismatics, but we seem to be languishing on Deception and waiting for everyone to get down to Naggy again so we can go after the drakes.

So, any suggestions? I have a number of alts, but they're all tied to other friends' characters. I'm primarily a group player - I can solo, but I don't find it very engaging and tend to lose interest quickly if I'm not playing with someone. Lately it just seems like an uphill battle to form groups and get something moving...like the stars have to align to get the right people on at the same time, otherwise there's just no chance of getting anything done. I'm finding myself spending my gaming time on other games where I don't have to rely on others being around and interested to do anything. I'm a pretty social guy, too - I have no problem making friends and have a lot of contacts outside the guild, but I'm just not motivated to send the tells and try to coordinate an endeavor whenever I'm logged in.

Anyway, sorry for the whining, but I'm hoping y'all might have some ideas about rekindling interest in the game once you hit 60. Thanks for any and all feedback, take care.

Hey Jay!

It is so funny that you just wrote that post becuase about 3 seconds before I went to the ranger board I asked myself "I wonder where Jay is?". I guess all us Rangers are telepathically tied to each other through our love of the wild :smileyvery-happy: I hear ya on the getting bored part. I went through a rut like that about a month back and did not play for awhile (2 weeks). Sometimes a break is just in order. I came back refreshed and ready to play again. Change is good and refreshes the mind and spirit. I would not press and just let your mind wander where it wants to go. Eventually, it will come back to EQ2 and you will be re-cahrged and ready.

Good luck with everything and glad to see you posting and letting us know what you have been up to.

Elbryan

58 Ranger

Blind Guardians

Everfrost

I've hit the same spot I think. For me, it seems like if I want to get anything done I have to solo it. Can't get groups to save my life. One thing I've started doing is that last night I started the Peacock club quest series, and I finished all of the Court quests for the medallions for the Ring of Fate (excluding the medallion from Blades because I can't solo that instance). I'm just working on things like that to try and keep myself busy and not get bored. The other thing I tried, was that 5 minutes ago I entered myself into the process to hopefully be picked for beta testing KoS. If I get in that, I figure I should have a lot more fun testing that out and seeing all the new things there.

I guess my advice is to try new quests like the peacock club line or the Amulet of ro (FT1 necklace), maybe look into KoS more, try to talk Demlar into switching servers, little things like that. lol

Hope you start enjoying the game more soon bud.

Naturally, Jay, I'm going to do whatever I can to keep you here :womanwink:I actually experienced the same thing. I began looking around for things to do during our off-raiding nights and there just didn't seem to be that much. I went back to crafting to mix things up a bit, and it has helped a LOT. It makes me enjoy the adventuring/raiding even that much more. But I think as you begin to recover from being sick, things will seem better. Apparently you and I had similar experiences over the holidays because I was under the weather, and had to go out of town as well. It forced me to take about a 2 week break with only a couple hours playtime during that period. So yes, a break may help....and I would suggest doing anything to get out of the same old routine. Spice things up a bit. Get your guild to try some different raid encounters...fire a couple arrows at Terrorantula then run like hell (I had a ranger guildie do this....it was hilarious)... anything at all.

I know what you mean. I am 50/50 with the new expansion KoS coming out. Kind of upset that the level max is going to 70 and the fact that I havent done 100% of DoF but on the other hand I am excited for the new content. I can't even count the number of times I have done all the T6 instaces (Poets, Scornfeather, Cazel's, Ancients Table, etc.) but if you are gonna do the instances try doing them solo if your bored. Or if you like grouping, try a small grp instead of 6 lvl 60's where you can walk through Poets in your sleep. Doing the instances in a 3-man grp is a lot tougher and IMO a lot more fun. :smileyhappy:

Create challanges to keep yourself interested.

Trying to Solo instances like Scornfeather or grabbing a friend and Duo'ing PP are great challanges. Hell one of these days I may get bored and try to solo PP but for right now I have fun duo'ing it with my monk friend. All but the Keeper and Creature of Beauty go down against his kung fu and my flurry of arrows. We have got Keeper down around 50% a few time but haven't worked out a tactic to kill him yet.

Other fun challanges are to take 5-6 people down to the Silent City raid zone. Play around with the x2 ring events and if your up for more of a challange take out the x4 Capt groups. If you can get 8-10 you can play around with the x4 ring events. Silent City is alot more fun when you go with limited people over a full raid force. Doing that place with 3-4 groups is just boring things die so fast. Doing it with 2 groups or less makes you work for the kills and makes for a real fun challange.

I'm just 41 / 51 Woodworker so I have just found new content, but I was going to suggest you use this next week as a chance to take a nice little break. Go to the video store and rent all the movies you've missed... catch up on house cleaning etc.I just started a Mage the other day... that killed a night on the Isle.I dunno, I would rather lose you for a week than see you burn out.

First off, I hope you get to feeling better soon!

After I hit 50 I got to where I was pretty unmotivated / bored in game. I got to be somewhat unsocial - except for when my friends and guildies would drag my ranger-butt out and about to poke holes in stuff. I took a break for little while, I would still play, but just not as much. Then I decided to start crafting. Omg, the monotony made adventuring 100000 times more exciting than the mindnumbing button pushing of crafting. LOL

I was starting to get bored a while back after I hit 60, then I was playing around at the character select screen and I ended up creating a very dark female barbarian fighter - who is now a 30 Bruiser. I'm such a noob in FP. My bf created a Brigand and it's been like a whole new game for us because we've gotten to explore all of the baddie zones and whatnot. That has definitely revived my interest in the game. I still love my Ranger - but I needed something new and different for awhile.

Not crazy about the new cap level, but I'm definitely excited about the new content heading our way. If nothing - your sense of adventure will surely be aroused as KoS gets closer and closer to release date.

(((hug)))

Hope your sweetheart's puter get fixed soon! That's another big thing - I just don't have as much fun without my own sweetie there with me. (he says the same thing - it's just not as fun) He's as obsessed with the game as I am, but he actually started to lose interest when he was off for xmas break and soloing alot while I was still at work. (he's a school teacher so he gets a ton more time off for xmas than I do - grrrr, lol) Anyways, having your sweetheart back in game will perk your interest back up, too.

My guild was having trouble with raids as well, so I found a few other guilds in the same situation, and we created a raid alliance. Been doing well for a few months now, but it does require some effort. These days I'm mostly raiding and doing real life stuff when we're not raiding. When KoS comes out I'll start levelling again.I really don't do much solo/grouping at 60 anymore, except for helping guildies with peacock and ring of fate quests.

I know the feeling jay - it's common in almost all mmo's once you get near the end of the content. My best suggestions: - Roll an alt of the class you are least interested in playing (diversity baby!) - Organize raids of upper level content- don't allow others to dictate whether you can find a group or not, go outside your guild if you have to. - New expansion in 1 month or so. - PVP in 1 month or so. - Mentor some lowbies. - Try to find some pickup Roleplayers. - Write a new ranger guide Best of luck to ya!

I won't pretend I've got as high with my ranger as you but I've played 6-7hrs every weekday and 12-16 every weekend day for about 11 minths so I'm fairly intensive. I find my interest has been kept by doing crafting in the week and adventuring at the weekend (I don't play Th+Fri). In terms of adventuring I currently have a lvl48 ranger and lvl 50 shadowknight to cover two completely different playstyles. I also get a lot of kick about the FP vs Q angle and being the only high level FP person in the guild allows me to really vamp up and stay in character a lot of the time. As the "guild (psycho) crafter" I've levelled a jeweler, weaponsmith and alchemist to 60, with a sage in the mid 40's.

I tend to be goal orientated and my goal is that no guild member should need to go out of the guild for anything player crafted. Its an insane goal but means I have a BIG target to aim for and I never suffer from "completion withdrawal". Though sadly my storage is currently full of books for the other crafting paths!

That mix of classes also means that I'm nowhere near completing everything - its a running joke in guild that despite having a 3 bedroom house in Maj'Dul and ally status of the Court of Truth I've never hunted out there once. I intend to shock them all this weekend when I hit 50th and finally hit Sinking Sands etc. :smileyvery-happy:

The reason I started all the different classes above is that I HATE levelling without vitality and cycling all my characters has helped keep my interest very effectively.

Variety is what you need. I have a Ranger as my main, but I also have a Conjuror and Bruiser with their combat xp turned off. Just quest with them, makes a massive diffrence. Obviously get them to a useful lvl first, where they get decent pets in the conjuror's case (about 33/34) and Fake Death and Fear for the Bruiser (around 30).I also find there is a completely different atmosphere in the crafting area. Usualy good chats going on in Willow Wood crafting area. Also try different types of crafting. My Bruiser is a Woodworker now and you get some fun new things to make.Variety, it's the spice of life

/breaks Kaeros' legs so he can't go anywhere. Hehe I know Cersiana would back me up on that lol. Nah bro I have had some of the same sentiments lately myself, but I know it's mostly because I'm 60, I've seen and done most of it, and raiding is seeming to go everywhere for anyone in my guild but scouts and monks hehe. My big interest peakers lol, if you can call them that, lately have been Tradeskilling /vomit and playing alts which isn't so bad since I can gear [Removed for Content] them to death with the drops in low lvls now. As far as end game goes I'd suggest doing off the wall stuff when and if you can, go to the arena and try to start up a match or four, or something I can always seem to distract myself with is using a touch of my will power to motivate myself towards doing some quests. Once I get into to it, I can usually quest all day. Pretty much since I've knee capped you now =P, just stick it out till expansion or even till LU19 hits it seems to have a virtual truckload of goodies though I guess most are going to be geared towards technical content rather than game play content. Anyways I'll try to post some other stuff at the moment I'm scatter brained I just got Hypnosis the System of a Down cd and it keeps cutting in capturing my attention. [Removed for Content] is banana teracota pie lol and I've gotta find out what kind of thought process went into making those lyrics. Ultimately play another game for a bit till expansion or try to get into beta, I keep a couple or 10 good shooters around to captivate me between eq2 fluxes and I still try to play the occasional console or pc rpg non mmo now and again. I've always got something half on teh side burner, guess it's time I quit being a pansy and got back to playing F.E.A.R even though it scares the hell out of me rofl.

I feel where your coming from. Felt the same way at both 50 and 60. Thankfully my guild raids every night. But when Im not raiding I have to find something to keep me busy. I've grown tired of doing the same instances over and over again, now they just seem like a bother I can do without. I at least managed to finally get 60 Armorer and now I'm working on an alchy. Hopefully the alchy and the raiding will keep be occupied till the expansion. I should probably put the alchy on hold and get my fat [Removed for Content] to the gym and take it easy till the grind to 70 starts, but oh well I'm addicted and the thought of having my own poison maker would be nice.

Like the others here, I would say take a longer break and maybe variety. I'm not even 60 (54 Ranger) yet but I've felt that way several times over the past couple of months. After a week off in those cases I was refreshed and ready to adventure. And I'm not a huge fan of tradeskilling, but I've leveled an alchemist to 20 and I'm starting to enjoy it. The other day I got into a pickup group in Pillars of Flame and we just went out to the island with the huge bonsai tree and killed harpies for hours till everyone leveled. While we were doing it we were laughing and just having fun bantering. It seems in EQ2 those experiences for me still happen and they make the game for me. There are also some of the very long solo quest lines in DoF...I know you're not a huge fan of soloing, but these are fun and seem to help me when I need some focus. In any case, you've always been very helpful, responding to my posts etc. in a timely manner, even when those posts are kind of "newbie" Ranger questions. :smileyhappy: I'm grateful for that and wanted you to know that your support is always appreciated.Bah, enough of the gushy stuff. I won't try to break your legs like some of our other friendly Rangers here but I'd also ask that you hang around and come back after your EQ2 break. :robothappy:Hang in there, and many thanks!

Wow!!! The outpouring of support and encouragement in this thread alone helps light a lil of the old fire again... this really is a terrific community, and I owe you guys a huge debt for being so supportive.

Now, regarding the variety of suggestions... some reactions / observations / what have you:

Raiding: I've done some, not a lot, but I've enjoyed the raids I've been on. I just don't want to keep organizing and trying to lead them, it's more of a headache than I really enjoy. I guess that's being selfish...I don't mind *helping* but I've coordinated some myself and it's more stress than fun. Though it's definitely a HUGE charge and very fulfilling when the raid is successful. My guild is pretty casual, full of fantastic people but generally not inclined toward raiding (yet). We do have many level 60s who are willing to raid, but generally ppl seem to be waiting for someone else to get the ball rolling, rather than working together to make it happen. I love 'em, but this is just not a strength of ours. We're in a number of so-called raid alliances, few of which ever lead anywhere. Though one of them actually has a guildportal site and forums and they seemed to be more active last I checked, but I was too busy with other stuff to participate so I stopped checking the site and removed the chat channel. I guess I should check back now and see if they have room for some uber DPS.

Crafting: Ugh! I'm just a lousy crafter overall. It's SO monotonous. Maybe if I move a TV into my office and watch Aqua Teen and Sealab on DVD while I sit there and press buttons, it'd work. One problem is that I picked the wrong crafting class with my main - provisioner has got to be the most god-awful boring profession there is. I do have an alchemist in training but she stalled at 18 - at least that might be a little be less boring and make a little money on the side. I might do something goofy like roll a carpenter or weaponsmith, so I can at least make permanent objects. Crafting as a prov has no satisfaction to it b/c food and drink is so transient, the market is flooded, and it's torturous to make 20 of the same combine over and over. Alchemy is a bit better, and maybe another profession where I could make permanent items and go 'I made that' would be more fulfilling.

Alts: Oh, I got 'em, a full stable. A 33 inquisitor, 29 guardian, 25 bruiser, 18 enchanter, and a wee lil 4 scout who may be a dirge or brigand, depending if we betray. Here again I'm hamstrung by my own playstyle - I don't really like soloing, so most of these alts are part of existing alt groups with other friends. So I'm tied to their toons, and if they aren't on or aren't playing those characters, my alts don't go tend to go anywhere. Though my chanter could, maybe I'll at least work her up to 20 and see how that goes. It's just not much fun playing a group support class without any group. Other issue is that none of my alts hold much excitement for me right now. I was pretty fired up about the guardian for a while, til the late 20s when I realized that guardians are pretty gimped (at least at that level). Tanks that can't soak damage or hold aggro kinda aren't tanks. May be time to take the inquis out on his own, though, start getting some pickup groups and see how far I can level him on his own... hmmmm.

Anyway, enough of a diatribe... thanks again for all the suggestions and encouragement. I don't usually sink to the point of whining, but others have dealt with the doldrums before and I knew I could rely on you guys for some good ideas. Just posting and reading your responses has helped rekindle some interest, so I'll probably spend some more time in-game tonight and see what kind of trouble I can get into. Thanks all!

Take a break if you need it, and come back when you're ready. It won't do your outlook of the game any good to log in when you're not enjoying yourself. That's why you don't see me till later at night sometimes or at all. I RP out in IRC with my boyfriend before he goes to bed, then do something for an hour or so before I go to bed myself. Work and school has really given me a lot less time to play, but before that over the holidays I just had other things I wanted to do more. Gotta keep yourself happy.

As a guild leader, and just as a player, i've experienced this in a variety of ways. I see it as habituation. From a behavioral perspective, no matter how dynamic or engaging a stimulus is... repitition is going to make it less interesting if the rewards aren't that substantial in the scheme of things. Granted there are other variables to take into account to influence the rate at which habituation occurs.... but that's the general idea. For most players, I think, dinging levels and obtaining uber gear is most of the reason we play. The people we meet, and the friends we have are auxillary and enhance the expereince; but ulitmately we're all just working together to acheive the same goal. The key to satisfaction here is maintaining the sense of achievement (thank you KoS and AA's!!!). As deep and complex as EQ2 is, it's still a game; throw a little furstration (no more leveling, and difficulty to execute a raid) on top of not getting what you want out it... and it starts to look pretty drab and dreary. Examples are bountiful. Take January of '05 when there was a mass exodus of lvl 50 players. There are plenty of excellent solutions offered here, I don't have much to add to them. I've been 2-boxing a good bit, which allows me to farm for uber loot (I make sure i have the zone to myself or nearly so, i'm not THAT selfish!), or duo alts which is pretty fun and challenging. I'm enjoying playing different combos, but on a side note, no other class is really as fun to play as a ranger has been. Ultimately, if i'm getting bored with EQ, the best solution for me is to play something totally different, or get away from the PC completely for a little while.

And thanks for the info Kaeros, now that I went and checked out a lot of Suite's work I noticed she has done just about every sig I've ever looked at and said "wow thats cool I want one like that" hehe. I'll get to work on batching together the info and screenies she'll need.

Kaeros (BTW sorry, just saw this today)

It seems you are in a similar place to where I was...while this game is very fun, can be very social...it can get monotonous ([Removed for Content], I think I spelled that right) after awhile. I am just normally a pretty outdoorsy person...but I found that when I came back to the game, I was more than ready to put my time in again. I enjoyed playing my toon much more. You chose a ranger as your main for a reason, remind your RL self about why you enjoy playing one in a fantasy game.

When it comes down to it...as long as you are happy in RL what does any of the other stuff matter. Buy 'Serenity'. Watch it, love it, watch it again.... then go buy 'Firefly' when you realize that you want more 'Serenity'

2 days solid crafting, no adventuring, while watching Arrested Developement. Comedy doesn't come any better than that, and next thing you know you have a lvl 30 Woodworker and your tailor had made a stack of coin :smileyhappy:

Yeah, I might find that excitement... but at the heart of it, I play this game for the people, not the loot or raid mobs. Leaving the guild isn't really an option for that reason - whatever I accomplish in this game, I want to accomplish with the guild I helped grow from the beginning. I could go elsewhere and get a lot more stuff done much faster, but the achievements would be hollow if they occurred with a bunch of strangers. Generally speaking, I really like the people in my guild, I just wish there was more direction and motivation to move forward as a whole. I try to provide it when I can, but I'm not a leader and my cat-herding skills are back in Tier 2 somewhere.

Heya Jay, you and I go back to launch on these boards, and I can empathize with what your going through, I was feeling the same thngs about 5 months ago, finally I decided that I should just walk away and take an EQ vacation, including EQ1, I had been playing for a total of about 30 months straight and just hit a wall.

So I took off for about 2 months and came back after DoF launched, to see what changes were made, and frankly think is was the best thing I could have done. I love the game and class again, I'm playing less but enjoying it alot more. Everything is fresh again, and I've been having the most fun playing my Ranger since launch. Crap I'm even Tradeskilling alot now......

So my advise, and I'm no expert do what you think is best, but take a break, walk away before you get so bored, that it turns to frustration and you end up hating the game. Come back when you feel the timing is right.

But your [Removed for Content] better still come to the boards and post, these newbie Rangers need people like you......without you half will think they are tanks.

If i may make a suggestion, Perhaps you could help those who are just starting out to learn how to group (maybe turn the exp off one of your alts and just run newbs thru some of the lower quests) make new friends introduce them to ald friends when they come on and enjoy the company.

I know I wont have this problem for a year or so as I started quite late after launch. But when i get sick of trying to find a group at level 30 (and am not picking on those that I read in the forrums) I will log on to my new warden to be and run around collecting and looking for pickup groups that want or need a healer.

Game is a much more fun experience IMO in the 30's - first tentative steps into RE, Varsoon access quests.....actualy, just getting to RE alive is a fun challenge.I love Buggy but sometimes it's fun to see things in a different light - Bruiser and mage are solo elite, and a completely different style of play to the Ranger (conjuror is like an all-in-one group with pet tanks, healer (she can heal pet) and nuker....oh, and adds if you include the fishys :p)
