<DIV>Do you do it? Tactics? How are your results?  Reason I ask is because a Pally asked to Duel me, 3 lvls my senior and I whupped his @$$.  This was my first duel.  It was a ton of fun and I hope to do it more often.</DIV>

<P>I duel occasionally, probably will more often now that poisons don't disappear on death. I've won most of the duels I've fought, got caught off-guard a few times by people exploiting the start timer and learned to always receive the challenge instead of being the challenger. Lost one time against my friend's guardian but I've beaten him four other times so that's all good. <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /></P> <P>As for tactics... I used to rely primarily on Cheap Shot but I've been using stealth more in the last few fights and it's worked well. Almost too well. Tactics vary according to the opponent, but in general I stay moving, stun and debuff as often as possible, and unload with my high-damage multi-arrow attacks whenever I can. </P>

I almost never duel. They are fun (especially if I win - LOL). I've been trashed by bruisers and monks, but have held my own against Furies, Swashies and other Rangers. Funny story about this one Ranger, he was 7 or 8 levels my junior and wanted to see some of the big stuff coming his way. So he had me duel him and hit him (ROFL) I used my Sniper's Shot adept3 on him. I have never laughed so hard in my LIFE!!!!! When he revived he was all genuflecting to me and whatnot - it was hilarious!!

<div></div>This IS NOT my writing or work, it belongs to Mortred at: <a target="_blank" href="http://www.thescoutssanctuary.com/viewtopic.php?t=5055">http://www.thescoutssanctuary.com/viewtopic.php?t=5055</a>I saved this excellent post for my own reference from Scout's Sanctuary. I'll repost here.<b><font color="#ff0000">The comment below was posted by '<font color="#ffff00">Mortred</font>' on Nov. 18, 2005 in the Scout's Sanctuary forums.</font></b><font color="#ff0000">Begin quote:</font>As a ranger your biggest weakness is your bow, your biggest weapon is your bow - use it wisely. Always make sure you are equiped before starting a duel with someone, and keep in mind who you are up against. Each class posses weaknesses and challenges. First, always always ALWAYS have a poison equiped, and your offensive used when you start the duel.Mage - Mages are the easiest for a ranger to duel, because of there lack of health, and there longer casting times, and there lack of defense. - The best way to defeat the typical mage is to move up to the mage use stun, debuff it while moving back while using the dirty tricks line (it can be used while moving), and dont hold back, open up with the tripple shot line, and the double shot line - The typical mage will be dead quickly. This works for conj's and sorc's. You have to be carefull of chantys (FEAR THEM) Use the same strat as mentioned but instead of using another double shot - use Hunt. That will give you an edge for some time.Fighter - Fighters are generally the same type of duel, they have to use melee to hurt you, pallys and SK's can hurt you from a ranged and heal themselves int he duel. I will give two types of dueling strats for both. For your typical Monk/bez/guard - Open with stun - move behind them and use the dirty tricks line spell while moving - then keep running and use the backshot line. You should have enough distance to use tripple shot, and double shot, and leg shot , once the fighter gets close enough run away and use snare to refresh the snare while moving. Then continue moving and use pick off - by this time you should be able to pick off the war with the rest of your ranged attacks - if the war is NOT dead and at 20% hp or so - turn on yourdefensive stance then walk in and use cheapshot - and dot him to death. OR - invis (invis is safer but your oponenet will not take the second duel Razz). For pallys and SK's you have to keep them guessing for they can either do some heavy damage to you - or keep healing themselves.. Open up with cheapshot again - and run away using dirty tricks and then crippling arrow then invis. This will keep them debuffed for some time leaving you to take them down as fast as you can before you run again - Wait about 20 seconds so cheapshot can activate again - then use your hidden shot, tripple fire, double fire, and then use cheapshot when they get close - backstab then invis. When you are invis they will likely be healing themselves, or looking for you or hiding.. (note - the longer you make people wait the more anxious they will get, and themore theyw ill start moving around.. Leaving you to hide ina cornerner and use backshot and a full arrow volly against them before they notice you)<!-- D(["mb","<br >Priests - Preists can be quite the challenge to duel because of there ability to heal themselves, druids have the ability to put on damage shields, and then mystics have the ability to ward themselves - dont be afraid of any of this.. You have to time everything right though. Open up with cheapshot and then go all out on them with tripple shot, double shot - when they start trying to heal themselves (Depending ont he class, they will probabbly be taking 2-5 seconds to heal themselves) run up to them and stun them (long cast times mean big spells), and dot them as best them with one dot than invis, and run back and use hidden shot and give them the rest of your abilitys.. - the trick with dueling priests isent in killing them quickly, its outlasting them. You have to use preventitive measures from keeping them from keeping there health to high.<br ><br >Dueling other scouts - This is a tricky one because its almost like dueling a mirror - For those of you who are combo attack nuts - BEWARE ROGUES - They have the ability to fall down and make a combo attack hit you for ALOT harder than they would get hit (For you rogues out there, I suggest you perfect this technique for dueling- For others, keep this ability in mind for if you dont throw them off ballance you will find yourself dead or both of you dead in a duel), Since other scouts cannot see other scouts in stealth, stealth will put things at a stalemate, if you do use stealth after cheapshot remember to use your ability immediately after to keep the duel hot.<br ><br >Some tips - Stealth will break if your oponent is in midcast against you when you stealth - always make sure you have enough time to do your attacks with cheapshot running.<br >- Remember what attacks you can use while moving (snare, wounding arrow, backshot, dirty tricks, and any melee ability)<br >- Some melee abilitys have a slightly longer range than our actuall melee.<br >- Having a proc on your bow will change the damage you do on your trippleshots/double shots by more than you can immagine - Keep that in mind.<br >",1] ); // -->Priests - Preists can be quite the challenge to duel because of there ability to heal themselves, druids have the ability to put on damage shields, and then mystics have the ability to ward themselves - dont be afraid of any of this.. Mortred has some nice points, but there is one oddity. He makes mention that you should prepare with a vision totem of the butterfly (which is totally correct) but all the fight strategies are assuming your opponent does not have that as well. I would say that most people who like to duel, like to win. 2 gold or so for a butterfly totem is not that big a cost for potential victory versus a scout.Personally, I find phantasmic visions to be the best (and cheapest) way to win. The only real difference is that most classes seem to have stuns they can cast whereas, we must buy ours/rely on procs or live with cheap shot/sniper shot. The easiest way is just to hit auto ranged attack followed by your regular vollies. Ofcourse, you can always opt not to use them, some people are adamant about not using extras, though poisons are fundamental to rogue/pred classes imo.Either way, dueling is fun, and losing is not bad, if you learn something/have a close fight.Merkades, 60th Ranger.Tradeskills Suck, 34th Jeweler.Siege, Najena.

Theirs many flaws in that so called guide to dueling. Those tactics wont work more then once against a good dueler. <div></div>

<P>I have dueled only 10 times, but I have fraps videos of each one and watched all of them a couple of times each.  Here's a few things I noticed...</P> <P>- Keep moving!  95% of all people you duel cannot stand a moving target.  Set your auto fire on (with poisons equipped of course) and circle them.  If they start trying to cut you off, leg shot them or snare them and change direction.  Melee is not our strong suit (especially since poison only procs off of your primary dual wield weapon) especially against fighters... we go down kinda quickly that way.</P> <P>- Do not get into a war of attrition with any class, particularly a Paladin or an SK.  Generally you will lose, since we are made to kill opponents quickly, not fight a long drawn-out slugfest.</P> <P>- Guardians seem to be the wimpiest fighters, monks seem to be the toughest when it comes to damage output.</P> <P>- A DOT is one of our worst enemies.  Assassins hate this because you can't stealth if you have a DOT active on you, reducing most of their high damage attacks.  It takes a lot away from rangers, too.</P> <P>- Pets suck.  They make life hard for us.</P> <P> </P> <P>So my duels...</P> <P> </P> <P>1) VS. TEMPLARS.  He cast a DOT on me which prevented stealthy fire.  He resisted my poison at first, but eventually it hit.  Using auto fire I got him down to orange health, but he hit me with some smites and I had to jump into melee range to finish him off.  The only thing that made it as close as it was, was he knows how to heal and I had a hard time hitting him as hard as I am using to due to his good mitigation.  I fought another Templar and whipped his butt.  He didn't DOT me and I killed him in 5 bow shots.  </P> <P>2) VS. NECROS.  I hate these guys.  I couldn't get past the pet, which killed me in four hits.  I did hit the necro once, but the pet was simply to much.  I only got to fight this guy once, but I would have to seriously rethink my strategy against him prior to a rematch.</P> <P>3) VS. MONKS.  Of the fights I lost, this one was the closest.  I had her down to orange health before she had even hit me.  Then I was getting stunned, knocked down, and she did some 5000 damage attack that killed me instantly.  My poison had almost killed her, and it was almost a lucky win for her.  Monks are good.</P> <P>4) VS. GUARDIANS.  I fought two.  The first one couldn't figure out how to corner me when I moved, and I think I finished him in about 20 seconds or so.  The second Guardian mitigated a lot of my damage, but my poison finished him.  He did hit me with some decent shots, but I was never worried.</P> <P>5) VS. SWASHBUCKLERS.  This was laughable.  He tried matching ranged attacks with me, and I finished him in 4 hits.  Swashies really suck.</P> <P>6) VS. PALADINS/SK's.  Paladins are similar to Templars but with a little bit better offensive skills.  SK's are just plain mean.  I beat the Paladin I fought, although it was close, and was beating the SK until he harm-touched me.  I died very sadly.</P> <P>7) VS. WIZARD.  I don't know what happened here, but I had him to yellow health before he almost killed me with two spells.  I do not know what the spells were, but they hurt.  I only needed one more shot to finish the job.</P> <P> </P> <P>That's my limited experience in dueling.</P>

<DIV>I love dueling.  We even set up a "Fight Club" in the bottom of Fallen Gate ( the arena thing ).. 10g entry, winner walks away with the pot.  I think I made 1.5 plat that night.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>My strategy is fairly simple.  I dont like to overcomplicate things.  First and foremost, know your opponent.  Know what kind of damage each class does, and buy yourself a potion to protect you against it.  Fighters do melee- buy a physical damage resist, Wizzards will Ice Comet you- get one against cold damage... so on and so forth.  And I cant stress enough good poision... poision poision poision... and a poision debuff to boot.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Cloth armor wearers are by far the easiest to kill.  After the duel is accepted, go invis.  They loose the target ( ie, you ) and spam that Cheap Shot button so the second you become visible, youve stunned them and they cant cast.  Then back up behind them, hit them with a Culling and Tripple and they are dead.  Usually takes about 5 seconds.  Those with pets are a little trickier, but ive found that ignoring the pet and killing the mage is the key.  Once he/she falls, the pet goes away.  Trying to fight the pet can be long and tedious.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Fighers can be tricky because of their high mit and avoidance.  I have one monk that I can wipe the floor with, one that i beat but gives me a run, and one that kicked my butt.  It all depends on the skill of the player.  I havent perfected a tried and true method for killing them, but i will say that Stream of Arrows has become invaluable against them.  I know that doesnt help those under lvl 58, but its great to have a point blank bow shot for when they are on you.  A stun-root poison is great for plate tanks, since if you keep them away from you you can put serious holes in their armor.  Monks also have something called Tsunami, that turns all the damage they get back on the opponent for 15(?) seconds.. beware of this. you can end up committing suicide.  And you cant see when they cast it, so you never know.  </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Priests are casters.  No matter what type of armor they wear, they cast. The trick with them is to stiffle.  A stiffle-stun potion works wonders and Cheap Shot is your freind.  If they are stiffled, they cant cast, cant heal, and go down.  Oh, and beware of Druids, they see your stealth.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Scouts are a pain.  If you both invis right off its a stalemate, unless one of you has a butterfly totem ( reccomend!)  For another ranger, its a matter of who cheap shots who  first, then who has the better stats, and poision.  Havent dueled many rogues at all, so not alot of advice here.  Assassins are ... well... fierce.  Dont let them get behind you to use assassinate.  They are more melee than ranged, so a stun-root potison is good here too.  And now that i think about it, that potion would be good to use against rogues too.  Never fought a Bard at all, so if anyone has, let me know about it.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I am not by far the world expert on dueling, but i love it even when i lose. I chalk it up to learning experience, and i love trying to figure out strategies to get around their strengths, and find their weaknesses. I think that every class has the ability to beat every class if you do it right and educate yourself.  But most of all, win lose or draw, have fun with it.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>And beware of lag ;-P</DIV>

<P>just wanted to addwhat i do when fighting summoners:</P> <P>when i fought a 60 conj(i was 55 btw) well she kinda kicked my butt the first cpl of times even though i stunned her</P> <P>so i tried looking at the combat and the pet did everything so i just started the fight with a cheap shot on the pet and then blast the conj. pretty easy to do. the pet also had stuns and such that were nasty with the dps it can deal. with the pet out of the picture for 6 secs the summoner has almost nothing to do against u put on a stun poison and use presice shot before they manage to use any of their stun skills.</P> <P>hope this helps some of u</P>
