View Full Version : What the heck is this trap thing all about?
<DIV>This is snipped from another thread and the accusation on rangers using this to ks other players is disturbing to me , especially if its false but generates an unessary nerf. </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV><SPAN> <DIV><BR></DIV> <BLOCKQUOTE><FONT color=#ccccff>" </FONT><FONT color=#ccccff></FONT> <HR> <FONT color=#ccccff>Feawin wrote:<BR></FONT><BR> <BLOCKQUOTE><FONT color=#ccccff></FONT> <HR> <FONT color=#ccccff>Gorhauth wrote</FONT>:<BR><SPAN><BR> <BLOCKQUOTE><FONT color=#ccccff></FONT> <HR> <FONT color=#ccccff>TalenMorgan wrote:<BR>The ranger trap only lasts a few minutes and then despawns so this isn't really viable unless you know the mob will be up in under three minutes.<BR></FONT> <BR><FONT color=#ccccff></FONT> <HR> </BLOCKQUOTE><FONT color=#ccccff>Most of the mobs in Clefts have do not have variable timers that people are camping. That ranger would throw the trap, go do whatever, come back before or soon after the mob spawned, kill him, wait 6-7mins and then repeat."</FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT color=#ccccff></FONT> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>its from this thread:</DIV> <DIV><A href="http://eqiiforums.station.sony.com/eq2/board/message?board.id=spellart&message.id=71875" target=_blank>http://eqiiforums.station.sony.com/eq2/board/message?board.id=spellart&message.id=71875</A></DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>So I was wondering what all the more experenced rangers had to say about this as mine is only 41 and have no clue what this is.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV><BR> </DIV></SPAN> <P>Message Edited by Feawin on <SPAN class=date_text>12-08-2005</SPAN><SPAN class=time_text>10:36 AM</SPAN></P><p>Message Edited by Feawin on <span class=date_text>12-08-2005</span> <span class=time_text>10:36 AM</span>

<div></div>Thorny Trap, is a spell you can scribe at 52. It puts a trap on the ground that roots any non-epic mob for a while, deals some damage while doing it, and then slows the mob when it is finally released. It can also be broken early by damage. I've never used it to kill-steal someone, just cuz that's not really my thing, but yesterday in the Hidden Cache (instanced zone off sinking sands) I told my group to stay at the entrance, while I invis'd over to Bruticus, laid a trap, pulled him into it, and invis'd back to the group. About 60 seconds later, Bruticus came running towards me from across the zone.. .one quick Elude and he was on the paladin and dead. Not very time efficient, but possible. And yes I guess you could easily kill steal with this on a mob with a short static timer.. but a good ranger doesn't need to KS.... <div></div><p>Message Edited by Fennir on <span class=date_text>12-08-2005</span> <span class=time_text>01:45 PM</span>

<P>It is called Throny Trap and it is a level 52 Ancient Teachings Spell. Here is how I use it. I set the trap at the longest range possible (it looks like a nest on the ground) and then take a couple of steps forward. I first use Spring (AoE) and then run backward and use storm of arrows befire they hit the trap. Once they hit the trap they take a certain amount of damage (400-600) and are basically snared. All non-heroics are snared and can stay snared through damage. The trap makes groups no arrow mobs very easy as you can burn them down while they are trapped. At the very least they are released from the snare at different times so you only have to take on a couple (or one ) at a time.</P> <P> </P> <P>For heroics it usually breaks on damage but it still allows me to get a couple of shots extra off. I have an AD1 but I have heard the AD3 holds longer and breaks less on heroics. The problem is it will trap any creature that wanders across its path so be careful when in a area with roaming mobs.</P> <P> </P> <P>Elbryan</P> <P>55 Ranger </P> <P>Everfrost Server</P>

<DIV>this is what i posted a second ago on another post..</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> <DIV>Thorny traps is awesome with doing groups of mobs. Put it infront of them.. then cast the AoE Arrow attack and pull them onto the trap. Dmgs them about 400-500 on adept 1 i have and they are all stuck in place till i hit them. So i can get a ranged attack on one then melee it to death..then go to the next. I havent used it on ^ or higher mobs yet but in none to / mobs it works great.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I would try it <IMG height=16 src="http://eqiiforums.station.sony.com/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif" width=16 border=0></DIV></DIV>
Could be used to lock down camps so no one else can get a shot. I don't think that's nerf worthy though and I hope the Devs agree with me. This is not a problem with the ability. It is a problem with the ranger who use it in this manner to far things.

EQ2 has for the most part stayed away from the whole "camping" bit. If a ranger is using his Thorny Trap to do that, then its that rangers fault and should be /petitioned as to what he's doing with it, not the entire skills fault. Thorny Trap is one of the few unique skills we get, and i hate seeing it being abused in such a manner, but to punish all the other rangers simply because of one bad egg, thats just stupid.<div></div>

<P>/raises hand</P> <P>Yep I've done that and freely admit it. What can I say I just find bot crews that try and control all the named spawns annoying. It was quite enjoyable to take away their camped named.</P> <P> </P>

Some bot crew walked in and started stealing my spawns! Since batu was the most regular spawn i kept laying my trap whenever all the trigger mobs were dead so i went to go kill gatekeeper trigger mobs and when i see the trap spring i would know the bot crew had it popped!</P> <P>The best part was tho it was only three peeps and the only named they could handle in there were warpaw (which they got a few times, but ussually drops crap anyways) batu and gatekeeper! They tried curator and karmut but they wiped so fast it aint even funny he he! </P> <P>So i just kept letting them try killign those till they had armor at 0% while i kept taking the ones they could do easy! Eventually they left........</P> <P>[expletive haxx0red by Raijinn] i hate botters!</P>

<P>Done it while camping some of the Bouncers in Feerrott (for the Stein HQ), and with 30 mins between pops it was a GREAT help.... playin' the PSP and able to hear the trap go off and see ANOTHER #$%%$&"# Greenhood Bouncer trapped there :smileytongue:</P> <P> </P> <P>PS: yup... I got them all eventually, and the mug is in my house now (since its No Value and I cant sell it).</P>
<P>Agreed, this is a problem with the player in question, not the class or the skill. There are plenty of classes that have skills which can be used to grief other players in various ways. Should all those classes be nerfed? I call BS. </P>
<P>I have done this as well in Clefts when some idiot wizard walked up, saw me camping a named and then moved to stand in front of me so he could ae the mob as soon as it popped to get the shot at the master chest. </P> <P>It was a way for me to try to deal with an [expletive haxx0red by Raijinn], that was it. Not something I do out of practice.</P>
