View Full Version : Attack Skill (Ranged) vs Parry

Was gonna post this under the "STR and AGI?" thread but I thought it better served to start a new topic on this.

The forumla for accuracy I believe is along the lines of Attack Skill vs mob con + mob def skills (Defence, Parry, etc). Though I have noticed that while I can, with focus fire and my other self buffs, get a 492 Ranged Skill (equivilant of a 90.4lv character unbuffed...) it doesn't seem to reduce a mob's chance to parry. The Creature of Beauty in PP parries just about all of my attacks and drops my DPS down to something in the mid to upper 80's (as opposed to something in the 800s when I'm not faced with something with such a high parry). When we fight her normally she's an Orange Con 65lvl Heroic ^^^ (I think, might only be ^^). I usually try to buff my self then hit Focus Fire and queue up Stream of Arrows. I have yet to notice a difference between having my ranged skill buffed like crazy and not... Anyone have an similar or contrary experience?

I've seen the same. I'll throw snipe on her, burtal instinct and focus fire both on myself and then unload with skills, or stream, and still see tons of misses.

Solution...bring a couple wizard/warlocks to just nuke her down since they don't seem to have the same issue with misses on that mob.

Yeah, I'm just wondering why a ranged skill that high cannot over come her parry. Maybe she's got the Parry Skill even higher than that I guess.

There's no way to know for certain what the formula is for hitting a mob, but it seems in my experience that the con of the mob is more important than attack skill vs the mobs defensive skills after LU17. Much as mitigation goes largely out the window regardless of its actual value when facing an orange conned mob, the actual value of you attack skills doesn't seem to have as much meaning as one would expect when fighting orange cons. What's really problematic about the Creature of Beauty is that she's an orange con ^^^ named brawler type mob, so she has deflection as well as parry and defense skills, and worse can use them through 360 degrees while other types of mobs can only parry frontally. Because of this all melees have a very hard time landing hits on her.

On the bright side, she is one mob I've never had any real concerns about unloading every high damage art back to back and then hitting stream of arrows on. Barring being very lucky on the random number generator, I'll miss so often that I won't be in any danger whatsoever of hitting the top of the hate list.

Demlar, that's because Brutal Instinct and Focus Fire, and Honed Reflexes for that matter only affect auto-attack/auto-bowattack.

Honed reflexes is a skill which is gained from the bloodline chronicles as a reward (minimum lvl 30 or so?) I bought mine from the broker. Its a haste buff, which lasts like 1 min or so, has few mins recast timer. Not online atm so dont know the proper stats. Also, yes its useful even to lvl 60 char. ALL self buffs are useful even if they are lvl 1 buffs, the color and quality of those doesnt matter, just what they BUFF matters... (if lvl 1 buff would giva ya 10STR and it would stack with all other buffs, you would still be using it, wouldnt ya?) ++Xan

Sounds nice... maybe wizards should get nerfed because their spells cannot be parried... I vote for parryable spells, whos with me?! /sarcasm off Seriously, the mobs parrying/blocking when stunned/stifled and from the rear and when shooting from stealth is just rediculous! Fix the mobs already, pleage. Oh... Whats the point of having + ranged skill buffs if they DONT affect your ranged CA:s? There is none. They are near to useless regarding that. Fortunately the whopping 10s lasting buff gives us a huge haste and DPS bonus aswell... (eheh) Brutal line is better since it lasts longer and can be used in melee where it actually means something. *EDIT* accidental 2 posts so i babbled a bit more here ++Xan

Message Edited by xandez on 12-09-2005 11:08 AM
You're right, the haste and dps increases they apply only affect autoattacks, but the increase to your ranged skill should apply to every ranged skill you use while those are going. It's the only way those skills aren't completely useless for high end rangers since we don't just sit there relying on autofire.
