Hi all

I dont actually have a character as yet in EQ II (am at work and it's dl'ing now) but I will be creating a ranger as i'm a SWG refugee.

Just thought i'd say hi and look forward to learning a whole new system with multiple characters

Just a quick question, and apologise if this is answered somewhere else, but the pet system. Are they like the creature handler pets in SWG in that u can have them fight for you, or just ornaments for your room?

Regards

They are ornaments that follow you around and get on your nerves because the continuely make the same noise over and over and over......you get the point. They are kind of neat but when it all is said and done they are fluffier than the Snuggles Bear. They will attack if they get hit by an AOE but only then and sometimes they don't even do that. My tiger has never attacked once ever, at least my bird use to save me once in a blue moon. Overall I only ever have them up if I'm bored as hell or getting ready to take a screenshot, something like that. Oh and you can't really use them in your house, you can summon them while you are in there but they don't stay in your house they go with you if you zone.

No prob bro and while your original question has been answered before it isn't all that prevelent and is also easy enough to answer. I hope you have fun in game and I wish you good hunting. As a parting tip I highly recommend you join the World Ranger channel that Kaeros set up. There are a few butt holes that won't give a new player the time of day, but for the most part there are a lot of very helpful and experienced people in the channel. In game type /join WorldRanger and you should be able to join it easily enough you may need something else in the /join command if you aren't on the butcherblock server I'm really sure. Anyways once you are in the channel, if you ever need help in game or just want to have some good old fashion conversations it is a great place to turn.

Thanks for the info and for making me feel welcome from the on-set

One thing I did find in my time in SWG is that the community, either guilded or in the forums, is what makes the game so will prob be quite an active poster

Regards

Heh, Rhanin forgot that he's on the same server I am. For those of you who are more fortunate and don't have to deal with me firsthand, you need to type /join Butcherblock.WorldRanger to subscribe to the channel.

Welcome aboard, feel free to ask us any and all questions that occur along your path to Ranger. This is a great group of people and I'm proud to be a part of this community.

Ooh a halfer scout hehe. It almost suprises me but back in eq1 halfling rangers were almost as popular as wood elf ones and I guess I never really noticed how nice it is to have them around until now cause in EQ2 it seems like I have never seen any halfer rangers on my server. I've seen an ogre ranger and even a few other wierd class race combo's but I never expected to see halfers and rangers be so seperate hehe.

Makes me more determined to be succesful then as I like doing the obscure

As a general question ... is there any issue of mentioning other SoE games in here in trying to relate what I wanna know ? (Does that make sense) What I mean is the only other MMORPG i've played is SWG (now a RTS but thats another issue) so any issues, like pets for example, will automatically be referenced to what I know from my experience there.

Oh, I apologise in advance for any anti-SoE rants re SWG's imminent demise (in my opinion), my friends cant believe i've gone for another SoE product but I luv fantasy and EQII was the only real choice as I h8 PvP.

Rgds

The pet is not COMPLETELY useless. I use my bear when I'm harvesting in the Ferrott, After I zone on the docks, I cast, and anchor him there. Then when I get an add while harvesting I [evade line], it takes off running for my bear and I can use my ranged attacks.

It's worth noting that when I do this, I don't wear imbued armor as that can either dammage the mob, or heal you generating more hate for you. /shrugIt works for me.

Just a clarification to your original post. Although rangers do not have any pets that fight for you, like the old creature handler profession in SWG. There are conjurors that do have pets that fight for them. The selection of pets u can control is far less than SWG however conjuror is actually a very useful class in EQ2. Coercer's can also charm creatures around them and use them to fight as well. So there are some profession choices in EQ that are similiar to the old creature handler of SWG.

Welcome to EQ, I am also a SWG refugee, I left 3 months ago, and cant tell u how much better this game is than SWG.

Hope this helps

Solarus of Neriak

Does it impact negatively if you are a mixed archetype/artisan in comparison to a straight artisan?

My mage has joined a society and got a trainer in her hometown but the magic system looks quite cool so not sure i'll use her in that way.

Oh, and apologies for going off on a tangent about artisans on a rangers forum but one thing I have noticed is a lack of FAQ's stickied to the top of forums.
First, go to Nettleville and walk in the alley back behind the buildings, along the wall.. you'll get hailed by some shady dude who wants you to do a beer run for him. Go meet his brother by the NH mariner's bell, then instead of going back to the questgiver, hail the guard (Hastings?) on the way back and turn in the contraband goods. You'll get a nice bag as reward for a 2-minute quest. I'd also look for bags and boxes on the broker, or by 8-slot bags for 25s from the store in North Qeynos where the broker is.

I see they have a maximum, presume thats based on either stats or your level and prof, but is there some form of 'skill point allocation' as I'm increasing loads of skills as doing alot of foraging and fighting.

Hope that makes sense, have a headache but it seems phrased right to me.

Rgds

Nah, you don't really allocate skill points, you just increase your skills by utilizing them. Which means you need to 'practice' to keep the important ones maxed - like using DW slashers and piercers is to keep both skills up. Same with your ranged skill, safe fall, defensive skills, harvesting skills, crafting skills, etc.

The only time I can think of that you make a choice of adding to one ability over the other is when you pick your attribute bonuses and can add +4 to STR, AGI, STA, etc.

Poison is absolutely essential for all rogue and predator classes, IMO. Our DPS was designed with the assumption that we're using it, so if you're not, you fall short of the damage you're intended to do.

As for RP reasons behind poison... I know my kerran ranger wouldn't think twice about using a lethal substance to hasten the slaughter of orcs and demons and the like. These are evil creatures who will kill me and my companions if given the chance, and rangers are likely to live according to the rule of tooth and claw - the strong survive, the weak perish, and I'll pursue any advantage that makes me that much stronger and more likely to survive. A wolf isn't evil b/c she attacks and kills a deer fawn - she's just hungry and needs to feed her cubs.

Besides, being a good class doesn't mean you're a cream-puff - our profession specializes in wholesale murder! Being 'good' just means that you're willing to make sacrifices to help someone, that you're inclined to put others' needs above your own, instead of ruthlessly pursuing your own self-interest at every turn.

Just my 2cp, as usual.

Another thing "I wish I knew when I was a young ranger" is dual wield...I was waiting to be "granted" this ability at a level up...I never knew that it was an automatic thing upon creation. So, if you did not know, you can dual wield. Also, there is a guy named Ian in QH to begin your armor quests once you hit 20th.
