I am a level 27 Ranger in Thundering Steppes and I can't seem to solo any Heroic Greens. I pull using my variety of ranged arts and get 30-40% Hp damage, but then they close and proceed to take me to school! I have poison and all my buffs going...... Is it that my armor and weapons stink????

Im a lvl 27 ranger too. The only way i can kill greens heroics is to KITE them. Completly 100% of the fight. Start with wounding arrow or backshot hit openshot and backpedal. Turn on normal ranged attacks and recast open shot when it refreshes. BUT you have to have the room to do this. If you get adds its gonna hurt. If its a castor its gonna hurt. I use poisons but greyed out now (until i find resonable priced t4 crafted). I also buy app IV or adapt spells whenever I get a new one. Soloing is hard for a ranger but not impossible. It is hard to complete quests solo because you cant pick the most ideal fights. If you just want xp though you should be able to find suitable mobs. GL

Its probably that your equipment and skills are to high a level to be effectively battling greens. If you look at your persona window all the attack ratings and defence numbers compare you to an even level mob, so try hunting blue or white heroics and you should definatly see a huge difference if the flow of the battle.

/sarcasm off

Oolan Woodswraith Ranger of the 23 season Najena

Message Edited by Serventof Wrath on 04-06-2005 11:22 AM

Is there somewhere that will explain how the relative level of equipment and arts measures against the relative level of mobs?

I had a look at your character, and the only thing that really jumps out as inferior are your head and chest armor. Not to be harsh, but you should really upgrade to some medium armor as soon as you are able. Even though the AC may be higher on the leather stuff, the mitigation on the medium armor will almost always be better than light armor. This is of course just my point of view, but I wouldn't dream of walking out of Castleview Hamlet with very light or light armor. Also, just a tip, if you haven't already, go to Stormhold and talk to Sir Valinayle. This triggers the Stormfire quest. The One-Eye bow is good, but Stormfire is incredible. Above all, don't feel inadequate because you can't solo a green heroic. Currently, that is one of the shortcomings of our class. It sucks, and hopefully SOE will do something about it soon. But until then, in general, we can't solo nearly as well as most of the other classes.

Thanks. I am on the last leg of the Valinayle Bow Quest right now. I've been looking to upgrade my head for a while, but I just don't have the cash and I am currently working on my last Armor Quest now, so hopefully that will help..... I just keep reading these posts where people say they are soloing all the double ups heroic white and yellows and I can't seem to do the greens...... Thank you all for your input on this as it at least makes me feel like I'm on the right track!

Talk to the Gnome in the bank at the Baubleshire for a nice helmet quest. Tinker Spindlecog I believe. Its comparable to the AQ stuff and is blue to me at 27. The quest should be very easy to do at 27.

I'm a 27 ranger myself. And I've been kiting around blue centaur groups, double up griffs and even a few even double up giants.

There are two ways you can go about it. You can open with backshot/wounding arrow and go full kite(you do this on group encounters)

Or

If your trying lets say a double up even or blue and its a solo mob, sneak up behind it and use a shadowlunge/Ho/corner (ringing blow) impale/bleed combo. You can spin that off pretty fast and due some decent damage. Then use cheapshot to stun and back away fast. Now you go into kite mode. Break cheapshot with wounding arrow so its fully debuffed and then snare it and run in a elliptical circle. I always keep fully pulled back so I have some view of whats behind me and use mouse control to tighten or widen the circle as needed. If the mob gets close use sprint to put some distance between you (note don't leave it on sprint get some distance and turn it off).

Your arrows will hit harder fully debuffed then its just a matter of using whatever ca's you have until its dead. Also keep bladefury up as the higher parry rate really helps out alot.

It can be tough until you get the hang of it but its not impossible.

Nial Bladestorm

27 Ranger Antonia Bayle

Good points, Rian. Esp using Cheap Shot to stun and give yourself that extra room - that's a technique I've (sadly) only recently begun to use when soloing.

Also, don't get discouraged if you aren't King Solo in the 20s. Most of us aren't. Especially if you're using anything less than Stormfire. (Frankly, there need to be more / better bows available at earlier levels.) Definitely upgrade to medium armor ASAP after hitting 20, as Zholain (I think?) mentioned. Make sure your jewelry is all yellow / orange b/c a lot of your resists and stat bonuses come there.

I think for late 20s, my biggest recommendations would be (A) Stormfire, and (B) player-crafted poison. Your NPC junk is nearly worthless by 28, and you'll see a very noticeable increase in damage if you switch over to some 150-level crafted poisons like Rancorous Affliction (small DD, high DoT) or Irrepressible Vexation (high DD, low DoT).

I recommend using the Crafters or Traders global chat channels to personally contact an alchemist and set up a one-on-one deal for poisons. Barter or trade as necessary, and don't be afraid to shop around - if someone's trying to charge you 80sp+ for a single vial, thank them kindly for the information and let them know that you'll try and find a better deal elsewhere. Good luck!

Also -

Pick your targets carefully. There are "high" ^^greens and "low" ^^greens. At 27, a level 23^^ is green to you, but you will have difficulty without kiting(high green). A 22^^ is also green to you(low green), and depending on your gear and how far you are into 27 will dictate your success.

If you are 90% into 27, you should be able to handle the ^^22 since your 27 level skills will be maxed out by then. On the other hand, if you are barely into 27 and your skills are not maxed out you will have problems.

This leaves you with a small window in which you are able to solo ^^greens without kiting.

At least, that is what I have found. Good luck.

Kwent

That sounds reasonable..... I thought greens were only 4 levels below and didn't pay enough attention to notice they would vary. Thanks

I think the answer lies in your subject line - What are you doing wrong? You're trying to solo heroic greens. Seriously though, with my equipment (which I view as reasonably good for my level) at 38 I can easily take a solo mob two levels above me with some room to run. But I won't go after a heroic green unless it's pretty close to the green/grey borderline.
