View Full Version : How to fix Ranger DPS/Thoughts on our role...

I was in a group with a few of my slightly higher-level guildmates in Runnyeye, and the thing I noticed most during fights was that rangers consume a LOT of power! If I actually want to do decents DPS, I have to constantly spam skills, most of which, including the 10-second, low-damage Lightning Strike and the 20 second (I think) Rip, cost 40 power. During long fights, which many of the fights were, I would run out of power quite a while before the rest of the people in my party. We were doing HO's to try to conserve power. Eventually, especially during the battle to kill a certain named Evil Eye, I would be using my lowest-level spells (I keep them on a separate hotkey page) in order to perform quick Ringing Blow HO's and get in a small amount of extra damage, but the sacrifice of my higher-level skills meant that, even with the quick HO's, my damage output was minimal. If the power cost of our low-damage abilities was reduced, Rangers would be much more effective in dealing damage.

Here's a thought, though, for the rest of you Rangers (instead of to the dev's): since I also play a conjuror of comparable level to my Ranger, I can say that the conjuror deals INCREDIBLY more damage than my ranger when it comes to groups of creatures. The EL boat right was a joke for my conjuror, who contributed the vast portion of the DPS to the group. Despite the massive damage from the conjuror, though, my ranger can kill a single target far faster than my conjuror. When I was in that aforementioned RE group, I would, instead of merely assisting the tank, take out whichever creature(s) posed the greatest threat to the group, like the healers or casters. If the group was concentrating on one of two healers, I would switch to the other healer, to prevent him from healing the first one by interrupting him with tons of skills and low-delay weapons. I can't tell you how many times I saw, after I switched to the other healer, that the first healer would go down almost instantly. There's more to fighting than merely doing damage. Use your single-target damage ability wisely, and you will be a great asset to the group.

Tied for #1 on my list to help Rangers is fixed broken skills and max 250 poisons(which helps Assassins also). After the skills are working right then look at power/damage ratios.

As for power, well the best bet right now is getting your PGT and Manastone. They help immensely. If your slashing is low grab a couple cheap t1 shortswords and head out to Antonica and just swing away at Basilisks till it is up to snuff. No CAs just use auto attack, it'll go up fast.

There is nothing broken about ranger DPS in the 35-40 range. Our bow arts are no longer tied to arrow type, so we can maintain max damage even with summoned carbonite. At 36, parsing next to a 35 wizzy, he was averaging about 100-150 DPS and I was averaging about 80-120 DPS. I see nothing wrong with that, considering how many more hits I can take than him. A good tip for multiple mob encounters is to use your highest-poison-proccing bow skills on each mob in the encounter after the tank has established good agro. This works especially well if you have another AOEr in the group to help out. I'm glad you've noticed how quickly we can take out caster mobs, though. There is nothing quite like hearing my buddy on teamspeak say "ok take out the heale... ok um take out the rest now!" after I Sniping Shot/Triple Shot an unsuspecting defiler. Oh and yes, with PGT and manastone I generally end fights with full power when the rest of my group has none, even when I have done the most damage.

Message Edited by Fennir on 04-05-2005 04:39 PM

Power was a problem with me also, but with the PGT and imbued armor I do more dmg and the leggings heal me and my other wepaon SSoY procs as well as my bow. I am usually at a min of 50% power and doing real well on HP's I am very happy right now as a lvl 40 Rgr.

I currently have:

SSoY

PGT

Imbued pristine:

Cedar LB

Fulg legs

Fulg BP

Bloodstone ring of AGI

I am calling myself a rainbow of death.

Message Edited by Caltros on 04-06-2005 09:33 AM
