I posted this in the Ranger section also.

Most people just don't understand how Skill upgrades work. This is mainly because of how new the game is and because those who did not participate in the testing during Beta just have not figure how things work yet. I'm posting this in an attempt to help remedy this.

This will focus on the Ranger skill tree but the rules mentioned apply to all skill trees.

Rules

1) A skills "con" color reflects how useful it will be at your current level.

2) A newly acquired skill will always con Orange.

3) As you level your damage will increase for an Orange to white skill. I'm not sure if it stops increasing once it goes blue or green....I KNOW it does not increase once it's grey and is even a little less

4) Once you start to pass a skill by, its effectiveness starts to go down.

5) Number 4 does not apply to any skill that only affects yourself (not sure about this one)

6) When a skill becomes "grey" it will lose most of its effectiveness and will be resisted by most exp giving mobs. (Though not necessarily against other grey mobs...an example of this would be a skill that also has the ability to lower a mobs resistance. Once it grey's out, it will do reduced damage and the debuff will almost never land)

7) Most skills that affect a mob have an upgrade every 14 levels. Entertainment skills do not follow the 14 level rule.

8 ) Having Master level of a grey skill is not as valuable as having Adept of a non grey skill of the same type. (i.e...you have master of a skill that just upgraded. Getting Adept 1 of the new skill will be more affective than the master 1 level of the "grey" skill)

Note: I'm not sure why Sneak attack and Cheap Shot do not have upgrades, but my Cheap shot still stuns my target 90% of the time. So it is at least one grey skill that seems to still work. It does not do much damage but it's good for interupting a spell caster. So I still leave this one up.

Below are the Ranger Skill upgrade paths. As each skill upgrades, you can discard the previous skill from your Hot bar.

Ranger Skill Upgrade Paths.
12/18/04

(1.6)) Quick Stike >>> (15) Pierce >>> (29) Lighting Strike >>> (43) Blazing Thrust

(3) Sneak >>> (17) Hunt >>> (31) Huntsmans Trap >>> (45) Stalk Prey

(4) Pathfinding

(4.6) Evade

(5) Sneak Attack

(6) Cheap Shot

(7) Ambush >>> (21.6)Shadowflame >>> (35) Raven Embers >>>(49) Tanglethorn

(8 ) Dirty Tricks >>> (22.6) Corner >>> (36.6) Pick Off >>> (50) Snipe

(9) Ensanre >>> (23) Impede >>> (37) Entrap

(10) Shadow Blade >>> (24.6) Shadow Lunge >>> (38.6) Crippling Blade

(11) Reconnoiter >>> (25) Natural Instinct >>> (39) Primal Reflexes

(12) Bleed >>> (26.6) Leaping Cut >>> (40.4) Deadly Reminder

(13) Impale >>> (27.6) Lunging Thrust >>> (41.6) Survival of the Fittest

(13) Hunters Instinct >>> (27) Foresters Insight >>> (41) Veil of the Forest

(14) Stalk

(15) Back Shot >>> (29.6) Sniping Shot >>> (43.6) Culling the Herd

(16) Open Shot >>> (30.6) Flaming Shot >>> (44.4) Sharp Shot

(17) Battle Flurry

(18 ) Survival Instincts >>> (32.6) Adroit >>> (46) Dance of Leaves

(19) Pounce >>> (33.6) Spring >>> (47.6) Natural Selection

(19.6) Shrouded Strike >>> (33) Pouncing Attack >>> (47) Longshank

(20) Phyn Hunting Hawk >>> (40) Jeths Cuddly comp. >>> (50) Rhyns Feline Hunter

(20) Wounding Arrow >>> (34) Crippling Arrow >>> (48 ) Debilitation Arrow

(21) Makeshift Arrows

(22) Steady Aim >>> (36) Take Aim >>> (50) Focus Fire

(24) Trick Shot >>> (38 ) Trick Arrow

(25) Escape

(26) Hidden Shot >>> (40.8 ) Hidden Fire

(28 ) Triple Shot >>> (42.6) Triple Fire

(30) Rip >>> (44.8 ) Tear

(32) Miracle Shot >>> (46.6) Mirricle Arrow

(40) Feral Instinct

(44) Leg Shot

(50) Storm of Arrows

I hope this helps.

--Siege--

Ranger of Clan WhiteStorm

www.clanwhitestorm.com

Message Edited by Tylis on 12-19-2004 07:00 AM

can we also look at this and say "color code" skills that use the same timer ?.. i'd be very interested to see if some of the "replacements" use diff timers than the skill they replace..i have a sneaking suspicion that shared timers are all over the place.

If I remember right, Quick Strike doesn't use the same reuse timer as the Pierce line.... it doesn't do much damage in the later levels, but useful for finishing off HOs if nothing else is ready to be used.

I personally consider:(19.6) Shrouded Strike >>> (33) Pouncing Attack >>> (47) Longshankupgrades for Sneak Attack. They share the same reuse timer. And even though they have the added effect of stealthing us, they are still the same basic concept, a backstab that you don't have to be in stealth to use. I use them after Cheap Shot when soloing.sOh and also:14 stalk --> 28 shadow --> 42 surveilI consider upgrades of Evade, (even though they do not share a reuse timer) because they have the same principle of reducing threat/hate.Other than that, amazing post. 5*EDIT: Dashofpepper, I just tried a Triple Shot and it did not grey out Open Shot. They are not related skill.
Message Edited by Jinsou on 03-11-2005 11:25 AM

Any chance of an update on this list? The skill upgrade paths have really helped me plan my upgrade expenses. This list has been a fantastic resource for me.

Well, IMO, you should upgrade almost every skill to App4, melee and bow attack skills to Adept1, and then the end-game (or "never replaced") skills to Adept3. I have a great working relationship with a local jeweler; I bring her a lot of free harvests and she makes me App4s (and so far two Adept3s) in return, so any new skill I get is almost immediately upgraded to App4 at the very least. If I can find Adept1s on the broker for a decent price, I pick those up too. I also make sure I go out of my way to provide my friends, allies, and guildmates with any Adept1s that I get in drops, and so I have a lot of people looking out for anything requiring Archery skill for me. Karma is good.

And yes, mods, please sticky this thread...

In case you want to add the training options into the mix: 1. Hager's Befuddling Strike (level 10) replaces Quick Strike. It is also, IMO, better than Pierce, so it effectively replaces that as well. YMMV. 2. Hager's Camouflage (level 20) replaces Hunt. On a related note, Hunt doesn't technically replace Sneak (they're not on the same timer and you can have both running simultaneously). However, I have no reason to believe that the effects stack, so it does -effectively- replace Sneak. Yeah, I can be a bit nitpicky ;^) Great post, great replies. My thanks to everyone involved.
