<DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I'm close enough to lvl 20 to start deciding whether to go Ranger or Assassin with my Predator.</DIV> <DIV>My questions is about going Solo, say from 20 - 30.</DIV> <DIV>My concern is that someone seemed to think a Ranger was a backstabbing-Thief-wanna-be.</DIV> <DIV>I can picture that for an Assassin, but not a Ranger.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>So, are our attacks skewed wrong?</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Then there are the problems with Dungeons, where distance may not be available, and you especially may not be able to set up a distance shot from the back.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>What's the consensus there?  Does everyone avoid soloing in dungeons, because it's too hard to work?  Do we just regress to a poor assassin type, and Hunt/Backstab everything?  Or do the Ranger's skills with a bow seem to work out alright?</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>thanks!</DIV> <DIV> </DIV>

<DIV>Soloing gets easier as you level up in your 20s.  When you get Triple Shot - it gets even easier.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>We start getting heavy on the ranged side as we level up.  The early 20s have more emphasis on melee, while the later 20s give way to more ranged attacks.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Dungeons are a problem - but not if your puller works with you.  Naturally, where you just came from is mob-free so have the puller pull the mob a bit farther back.  It seems like common sense but I frequently have to remind tanks (although they seem to be getting better the more they XP with Rangers) to do this. </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>There is a sweet spot - 2m~ back - that is perfect for all your ranged attacks.  No need to go any further back.  And don't forget that your skills can be used at flank too.  So if you can't get behind a mob, the side is still effective.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I don't solo in dungeons specifically because of all the group mobs and the inability to run off adds without adding more.  Evac is available at 25 but its a 30 min ability.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Don't get me wrong, melee still plays a large role in our damage even at 30.  Who would shirk a 200 and 300 damage melee attack?</DIV>

<DIV>Rangers are very much of a group based class.  We can definitely Solo, but all of our higher damage attacks are positional (flanking, or right behind).  The same holds true for Assassins, and it makes sense..of course you can do more damage from behind.  It doesn't make me feel like an assassin [Removed for Content] or a bow toting assassin at all. </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>As far as ranged weapons in dungeons, the only time I have problems with this is when our tank doesn't know how to position mobs.  These tanks usually don't know how to keep aggro either, so I almost never stay in a group like this, it's just a waste of time and a good way to get debt.  it only takes about 4 steps backwards to be able to use your bow, and even in corridors I can usually pull off a few bow attacks from behind the mob before moving in to melee.</DIV>

<DIV>OK, glad to hear our ranged attacks aren't useless in Dungeons.</DIV> <DIV>That was my biggest worry.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>thanks!</DIV> <DIV> </DIV>

Heya,<blockquote><hr>Kyklopes wrote:<DIV> </div><DIV>I'm close enough to lvl 20 to start deciding whether to go Ranger or Assassin with my Predator.</div><hr></blockquote>I know this is a pretty dumb question, but you do realise that if you're in Freeport you can't be a Ranger, and if you're in Qeynos you can't be an Assassin? If by close to 20 you mean 18+ then you're too far along to betray (have to do that by level 17) - which means you're stuck with whatever subclass your city has.

<DIV>I have not noticed any real problems getting bow specials off in dungeons.  I have actually had a bit harder time against Giants, because they are so big themselves, that you have to be farther from your group.   </DIV>
