The wonderful "Things I Wish I'd Known Earlier" post mentions something interesting:"* At level 20, you can purchase a "fun" spell that is based on your class. These spells are generally insignificant things that do not affect your efficiency in-game, but are meant to provide humor or an "ooh aah" factor."The original post can be seen: http://eqiiforums.station.sony.com/eq2/board/message?board.id=Newbie&message.id=47309&no_redir=trueI just turned 20 and I was wondering where I could find this "fun" class spell for Ranger. Thanks!

<DIV>Go to your trainer, there is one in Eldarr Grove (Little froglok guy standing on wall amongst three other trainers) or there is one in North Qeynos I think.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>It costs just a little over 14s.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Be warned, this really is just a fun spell which lets you summon a pet that is largely useless it just follows you around, it is not like the horse the Paladins get which at least serves a practical purpose.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>However rumour has it the bird can be indirectly useful, if you tell it to stay and call for help and run past the bird the mobs will attack the bird. I have also heard if the bird is attacked it will fight back, and that sometimes it will start getting involved in the fight however I have never had this happen.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Regards,</DIV> <DIV> </DIV>
I think we are all aware of it <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /> thanks though

<DIV>I'm looking to post less frequently on the forums I find them just full of very argumentative people :smileytongue:</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Well post less bugs/feedback/fix requests I mean, I use ingame /feedback /bug etc as you don't get someone attacking you after submitting one of those :smileyvery-happy:</DIV>

<DIV>please show some respect for this horse, it's been dead for a long time and we don't need to keep beating it.</DIV>
<DIV>My Hawk is not useless! We kiss and hug and he keeps me company on the lonely foraging trips. He loves me so much that he takes his cute little beak and tries to poke the big nasties that try to chase me. He is brave and fearless....just a little lazy...but I still love him!</DIV>
<DIV>Its not *totally* useless.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Try this.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>1) Summon hawk</DIV> <DIV>2) Attack a mob that is not grey (last 2 times I tried it with a yellow mob and it worked)</DIV> <DIV>3) Click yell for help and run away</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Most of the time this will cause the hawk to start tanking, giving you a chance to get out of dodge. </DIV> <DIV>At least, it has for me.</DIV>

Integral to the image of a Knight (the paladin) is a noble steed - their horse is a little faster than we are. It would be stupid to give them a horse that was limited to what would be (for a horse) walking. Soo I understand the paladin.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Insofar as we're doing this based on "making sense" a hunting hawk would be GREAT, if we got a ton of Exp from Rats and small possums, but we're fighting skeletons and 6ft tall gnolls. I think having a hawk fighting those mobs is inappropriate from an RP standpoint.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Furthermore, we AREN'T BEASTLORDS. We're rangers. We AREN'T MAGES, we're rangers. </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Some people have suggested that the hawk function as a "buff", increasing our Tracking skill for instance -- this is an idea I can get behind, but remember, no other classes receive a buff as their fluff spell. the paladins horse speed is incidental. Paladins are the ONLY class that receive a fluff spell that could be considered beneficial, except Rangers and assassins, whos pet sometimes tanks for them while they run away.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Lets be realistic here guys, come on. Necromancers can turn themselves into Skeletons. Shamans can turn themselves into hawks. Druids can surround someone with a cloud of dust. Inqusitors can make someone kneel down. KNEEL DOWN! Has Kneeling Down ever saved you from Debt and item decay? I didn't think so. What about surrounding your enemy with dust while he beat the daylights out of you? Our spell is the second most useful level 20 fluff spell available. Having ONE more useful spell does NOT entitle us to [expletive ninja'd by Faarbot] about our spell!!!!!</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Now that we've kicked the [expletive ninja'd by Faarbot] out of that horse, lets move on.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I'm sorry if this seems like a flame, Jahar. I've been talking about this issue for months and I'm sort of sick of our class being so whiny.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I'm really really really really sorry, I don't mean to flame you at ALL jahar. but I've expressed this oppinion a few times and I really want this put out to pasture, it's NOTHING personal. the last thing I want is to generate bad feelings within our community, but this is getting ridiculous.</DIV><p>Message Edited by blitz on <span class=date_text>12-14-2004</span> <span class=time_text>04:23 PM</span>

You can get the bird to tank for you, without calling for help, try this:Start with a weak opener, perhaps just a ranged bow attack... then immediately start backpeddling, use evade and stalk... The skills put aggro onto the bird. Feel free to backshot, openshot, wounding arrow at will. Works even better with high level evade and stalk (mine are app3 and adept1, respectively)... evade is actually a pretty good skill, doesnt get replaced (as of level 26). I would even consider getting adept3 or master for it, assuming this trend keeps.Just thought of something: Trickshot - puts a taunt on whatever hits the mob next. Assuming we can get the bird to fight back, we can use trickshot to *get this* taunt mobs onto it using the above technique. This should hold aggro for quite a while, letting you unload more skills while being out of harms way. If this works, paladins and their *slighty* faster horse can eat ranger dust.
<DIV>aye, good strategy, I'll give it a try tomorrow night for sure. Somethign gimpy like scarecrows to start.</DIV>

ok, tried it, doesnt really work.....Can still get aggro onto the bird, however its really hard with bladeflurry and/or any poisons active...however, the 70dmg from trickshot pulls aggro right back onto me....I'm actually sitting right here while my bird and a scarecrow duke it out... with no poisons and no bladeflurry, noticed a couple things:1. With melee turned off, I involuntarily attacked once... with my hand-to-hand weapons. Bugtacular.2. the bird hardly ever attacks. Been sitting here for a couple minutes, its attacked maybe 5 times. Conclusion: even if we could get the bird to attack more reliably (in order to trigger trickshot) you'll probably still pull aggro off it with the damage from trickshot, even in the absence of poison, bladeflurry, or attacking. Additionally, since any self-respecting ranger would never want to solo with bladeflurry or poisons off, even getting aggro onto the bird without trickshot doesnt last long, its much more effective to just start with a solid opening sequence. However, the bird still can be used as a decoy, in situations where you run and call for help... so there's a little consolation. But i dont like seeing my buddy die. <img src="/smilies/8a80c6485cd926be453217d59a84a888.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />GO Keker GO! You can take a withered scarecrow! (keker hasnt been hit once, a bird can parry apparently)

the bird has to be bought at eldar grove trainers i think.as for poisons there is a thread on what wich poisons do somewhere on predator or scout boards named Poisons:a guide by erasmus i think. to apply your poisons you need to equip it into an "activatable" slot by doubleclicking it or selecting equip from the dropdown and then once equiped rightclick again for the dropdown menu and choose "use". you will then get an icon in your buff/maintanded bar that will last for 12h/12h or 100procs (i've seen both mentioned) and you will proc a dd/dot combo now and then

<DIV>Aye, poisons are fantastic. I fear they will be nerfed soon so enjoy them while you can.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>You need to look at your poisons skill and check what level it is, there is a poison shop in South Qeynos that sells level 150, 200 and 100. (100 is upstairs, easy to miss).</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Be careful there is a bug with the level 200's that say they are perfect for your level even though you don't have the skill for them.</DIV>

The bird attacked it once initially, then never even tried again. Then I went up the mob and hit it once, as it turned agro on me, I turned autoattack off. Everytime the mobe actually HIT me, I automatically attacked it back. This is normal and good, and NOT a bug. It's what bladeflurry is doing. It's basically a reposte attack, a real fast counter attack when you get hit.

<DIV>Rangers are not "beastloards" but for everyone that has any D&D background Rangers come [expletive ninja'd by Faarbot] close to it. Tame animal comes quickly to mind. The fact that Rangers can move about the wilderness without making a sound lends to the belife that we (Rangers) are one with nature and all its creatures so we can move passed that group of Deer easily without upsetting them. Rangers are able to befriend a wild animal and perhaps build a friendship with said animal then it would hunt with the Ranger and protect him/her as well. Frankly I could care less if the "pet" would attack or not having SOME sort of function like increased Tracking range would be nice. I'd just like it for the RP aspect.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> Also having to wait until lvl 30+ to get a wolf pet is kind of corny, but something to look forward to I guess. Ideally, I would like the oppertunity to choose what type of pet, having a hawk like every other Ranger is "lame". The only thing setting my "pet" aside from every other pet is its name. I'm not sure if you can do this but feather, fur color choices wuold be nice as well.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>What we also have to remember this is a new game, perhaps SOE will change it in the future.</DIV>
<DIV>no other level 20 spell is useful aside from the paladin's horse.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>There's no reason to make the hawk a buff.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I agree that customization would be completely cool, but no one else can do it, so I wouldn't expect it. It's not even in the character models (they only have one for hawks, and they all look the same).</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>we aren't special, they aren't going to change anything for us. They shouldn't have to, things are good the way they are, we just expect too much. In EQ, rangers couldn't even DO anything for the first 50 levels of the game -- I know, I was one. It's nice to have DPS, the hawk is like free candy, let it go.</DIV>

Yikes, I didn't realize this would generate such an uproar. It was my understanding that none of the "fun" spells were supposed to do anything. The fact that the bird even tanks when I'm running for my life is more than I expected <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />If SoE is taking the time to fix or change anything, I'm [expletive ninja'd by Faarbot] glad it isn't this. There are so many other things that deserve their attention to make the game more enjoyable for everyone, not just a few Rangers that want an extra perk.Think of all the buggy quests, items, etc... I'm sure we would all rather see these things fixed. And considering that customization in EQ2 is already light years ahead of other games, what right should we have to complain? I love the game and I love my character. Can't we all just get along? <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />
<DIV>I love you, ae2kdotnet.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>With a deep and meaningful love.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Thank you for this post, it means a lot to me to know that there are some people who aren't just out to cry "NERF! OUR CLASS NEEDS FIX!" all the time. Actually, I was contemplating no longer posting on the boards because it feels like no matter what I say people continue to complain out of a position of misunderstanding. It's refreshing to see your perspective, which I share.</DIV>

I know the bird is just meant for fun, in fact, I'd rather have a bird than a glowing fist (zerks) or a horse (we'll all have one of those too, someday). I was just curious if we could get the bird to do something it wasnt really meant to. Like tanking. Even the fluke experience that it can save you while running away isnt what the bird is meant to do. I was experimenting <img src="/smilies/8a80c6485cd926be453217d59a84a888.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />Some people go nuts that their bird doesnt breathe fire and eat halflings, b/c pld's get a horse. Think of this - when we get horses, we'll at least have our pet still chasin us around, while paladins will have... an old useless mount <img src="/smilies/8a80c6485cd926be453217d59a84a888.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />

I dont care about my Hawks color but I would Like to give him a solid name he is my companion after all tired of it being a new name verytime strain on the rp process. FYI - I have not summoned a pet since level 40. With the exception of one time to play a trick on guildies :p You don't need it.

What I would like to know is, why did everyone become Rangers? Is it because they are the best DPS dealers, highest AC, Highest attack or anything else that mankes them the terminator of classes. As far as I am concerned we are playing a role playing game here, I don't care if paladins can move faster because of their horses, or assassins can do higher damage etc. I chose a ranger becase it epitomised what I wanted to be in game. I do not compare myself to any other classes as it is pointless. I would agree that our prime skill is archery, therefore we should be the best in the game at it, as this would fit with the role that SOE have mapped for their definition of a Ranger. At the end of the day I love playing my Ranger and I don't give two hoots about the other classes abilities as long as I am having fun. Sure fix the class if it has something out of balance with the definitio of the Ranger, but not because you want all the classes to be essentially the same.

<DIV>Making posion more expensive would be better than SOE nerfing it, So its more of an item you use against nastier mobs rather than have an 11 hour dot added to your wepon. As for the hawk part from pally and sk we are the only people with a semi-useful fun spell my hawk has taken aggro as i run for my life a good few times.</DIV> <DIV>I play rangers is every game and was very surprised to see that the majority picked ranger on this game. I think we get a bit too much cool stuff scouts in general can launch all the powerful HO's. rangers get good debuffs GREAT dps, tracking, snares and alot of high damage range moves. What i find the funniest is all these people doin dps tests "[Removed for Content] i do .4 more dps than a monk" (just as example not stating i get better dps).</DIV> <DIV>I didn't pick my race or class because they were the "1337", I picked ranger because I love the image of a powerful outdoor protector of life and general hunter and have held fast as a ranger since many many years ago when i first played BG, then onto many mmorpg's. I picked half elf becaus i think wood elves look stupid compared to what they looked like in eqlive.</DIV> <DIV>Don't sit round looking for hours at what the best class/race combo is just pick what you like and enjoy the game who cares if your better dps than so an so or if your race choice is better than another person of the same class, I play eq2 to have fun with my friends and to progress my char not to become "uber" or to grind hours and hours a day to try overtake my friends.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Each person has a diffrent play style and diffrent wants and needs, whether it be Casting powerful nukes that you like or just playing as a valiant knight, Don't chose just because this class out does this one. All the classes have diffrent advantages/disadvantages Pick somthing you enjoy and don't worry what other players think of your char when it comes down to it an echie sub-class may not do the dps a pred sub-class can but they can stop a mob in its tracks and offten save your group.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>We are all diffrent and we should all show it.</DIV>
