So I'm looking to start an alt and I was hoping for some advice. My main is a defiler, so I'd like my alt to be basically the opposite, a melee-oriented good character better at solo-ing. I've narrowed it down to Monk, Paladin, and Ranger. Any thoughts? Thanks!

<DIV>I'f you want to be pure melee I'd say go Paladin, since their fighter based. Ranger's are off of Scout so their more DPS, than meat shields (I only have around 800+ HP with Cleric Buffs) Whereas Paladins have over 1000. Monks Im not too sure about, Their more tank based than Rangers too. Though I enjoy my Ranger alot, even if it took me 19 levels to realise I had to be evil as an assassin and go Ranger instead, its ok. <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /></DIV>

Pure melee focus is not required, I just don't want a caster. How is the Ranger's solo capability?

It's possible, but I've been hunting with my roomate who plays a Templar, so I've had it easy. <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /> </P>

Do they have heals? Can they feign death? Do they have enough defense to survive without a group? Do they have some kind of powerful ranged or first strike attack that makes them useful? Do they have any abilities that contribute to solo gameplay? I don't know, and your jibe did nothing to inform me. Hopefully it made you feel clever or superior in some way. If so then it's not a complete waste of the written word.
<DIV>Ranger's solo ability isn't that great at all compared to Monk or Paladin I would assume. Ranger's need to be behind their foe a lot, and that's not gonna happen when soloing. Maybe 1 or 2 attack's cause you can stun a bit. Ranger's do much more damage to the back, that's how it is.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>And Monk or Paladin can take more hits while still dealing a bit of damage a bit similar to the Ranger as they are in front. I would think Monk would be the best though, just my opinion.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Edit: Don't get me wrong though, Ranger's can solo pretty decent. We can at least start the fight with pretty much damage and leaving the mob at an disadvantage. But I would think the fighter types have a bit easier time soloing. Requires more work as a Ranger to solo at least, but I like that.</DIV> <DIV>I haven't tried out the Monk/Paladin classes though, so please keep that in mind.</DIV><p>Message Edited by Lolien on <span class=date_text>12-05-2004</span> <span class=time_text>01:38 AM</span>

<DIV>Monk hands down... unless you want a free horse.</DIV>
If your looking to "solo" Ranger wouldnt be the way to go, its expensive, because of bow kiting, when a mob starts kicking your behind, but possible. I would go with Paladin personally, because of self heals, or monk, since if things get hairy, you can always FD. Rangers are a rogue class now, and have no self heal, and main damaging attacks are all stealth from behind.
<DIV>Not expensive -- I haven't bought any arrows since I dinged 21 and got Makeshift. I 'm sure when I stop being lazy, and start using the 1 - 5sp arrows it'll be expensive, but for now it's really no big deal</DIV>
