Well, I'm a new player who dabbled in eq1. I loved bards there and so rolled a troub here. I've been reading the boards and starting to think a dirge was a better choice? Did i make a mistake?

Dirges and troubs could both use a little help. Not much to choose between them I think. However, they might get some loving in LU 32, so you might want to see what's up there.

I'd think about a necro, swashbuckler or brigand if I were starting EQ2. Good luck whatever you choose.

If you played a bard in eq1, like myself, then expect a troub or dirge to be nothing like in eq1. I rolled a bard as my first character hoping to have a modified version of an eq1 bard. I stopped playing him and rolled a conjuror because it felt nothing like a bard to me. They do have some good group buffs, but the diversity just isn't there like eq1. You won't be leading your group, pulling and mezzing, sensing traps and everything you got used to on eq1, you are more of a background buffer here. Just research the class and if it still sounds appealing, than go for it, just be wary if you think it will be like eq1's bard.

Some people like them, others don't.

I've been playing my troub for over 2 years. We've gone through a TON of changes and that has put many people off.

I'm fully mastered, mostly fabled (I don't wear an item because it says fabled, but instead for the effects/role that it plays in my style) and I do well compared to some and poor compared to others. By and large though, I am not representative of the vast majority of troubadors and based on my gear/experience/etc I think we should be definitely boosted. For those that are not as well equipped as I am, I feel they're vastly underpowered and do not compare in the endgame to other classes.

Troubs do not scale well in the later levels. We have to be tricky to get the job done soloing. Much of our utility goes to waste in groups (pvp excluded). We're prized for a few spells in raids.

My troub interests me enough to raid with and quest a bit (gotta get more AAs for the marginal benefit they bring past 75 points), but not much more than that. I don't have the patience to play another toon to level cap, so I stick with the troub until I decide to quit all together.

Here is the way I see the Troub class; I had fun playing it low to upper middle levels, I'll even go so far as I loved it. after about 55 I think I REALLY started seeing the disadvantages of playing a troub. At this point there are starting be a class out there that can "just about" do every thing you can and more. When I hit 60ish I started getting random tells from raiding guilds to ask if I wanted to join them. Coming from a raiding background, I was shocked. What raiding guild would just ask someone to join with out knowing their skill level. Well I know now, because it doesn't take a lot of skill to play a bard as it is designed ATM in EQ2. Now it does take a skilled bard to maximize DPS and all the other good things. But to do what the bard in EQ2 is designed for ATM all you really have to do is stand around with your buffs on.

Unless you have exactly the right gear and maybe group members' buffs,it won't make much of a change to the success of a raid whether you press buttons like crazy or you just stand in the corner, sadly.LU32? I spend a lot of time on warlock, templar, wizard, and necro boards and none of them think every other class is over-powered, or that they are weak. Troubadours and Dirges have valid complaints.
