I tried using the charm song once, found it very ineffective. Would break after like 30 second everytime..Well i just won a master1 of the lvl 34 charm so im maybe reconsidering trying it out again.. So charm uses subjugation i think? Does having a low subjugation skill also effect charm breaks? And if so is there anyway i can practice a song over and over to raise this skill up?And one last question.. Do pets leech exp? If i am increasing my risk of death by charming something, will i also gain less exp from pet taking xp?

Message Edited by Kazdun on 03-13-200605:29 AM

From what I know pet only leech exp if he did 100% of the damage on the mob so you should be safe with that and increasing subjugation should be lowering your resist.

From what i know the troub charm spells are worthless. Your "pet" cannot attack.....so you can use if for a pulling tool or ghetto CC? And it uses up a conc slot.....I think they missed the mark on this one.

Spectred

You let your pet tank for you? I thought charm has a 10% chance of breaking each time your thrall takes damage. What I've been doing with an Adept III level 34 charm is charming one and tanking while the pet does damage from behind. It's been a godsend for soloing ^ solo and green Heroic encounters.Your pet will attack, but you have to take damage first. You can't command it. It's like the enchanter animation pet in EQ1 if you're familiar with that game.

Ah, I see. I'm 40 so I don't have mez yet. Having an ex-pet and a monster beating on me is a good recipe for escape or death.I don't see the quality of the spell making a difference in any case. It is still a 10 percent chance for charm to break each time the monster takes damage. We aren't Coercers. I don't think they intended our pets to tank for us.
Message Edited by Jooneau on 03-16-200602:26 PM

I think it's terrible that we don't have a "real" charm. Take away the pet commands, reduce the duration, increase the concentration fine. But why in the world add the 10% break to it? Makes it *almost* useless.

I just picked up Bria's Charming Sonnet Master 1 (I think, at work so spell name isn't in front of me) or whichever charm you have in your early 40s and decided to play with it. Now, I'm level 44 and I charmed a level 34 triple up heroic Great Briarwood bear. He was sooo cute following me around, but I digress. I decided that I needed to test him out. Went up to Bumspear and smacked him in the bum with a strength debuff. As soon as Bumspear attacked me, the bear went into action. I was actually doing really well in this fight (Bumspear, even at 10 levels below me, always kills me) until I peeled agroo off of my bear. He was tanking wonderfully, but once I took agro back, I was dead before long. I watched my bear continue on bravely as I hit the revive button. When I got to the docks, I heard the sound of a dropping chest, so I ran back to the area. The bear, and bumspear were both gone. Now, I don't know who got who, but the chest was mine. The loot in the chest was also pretty darn good (not great mind you), but honestly, it could have come from either the bear, which was triple up heroic, or the wasp, which was named triple up heroic. Bumspear could have just despawned in the time it took me to get back also. Regardless, I had a blast.

So, these are the things I learned.

Make sure, if you are going into a battle with a charmed pet, it's something that you can kill yourself, if you have to.

Don't accidentall target him and hit him (he doesn't like that much) :smileytongue:

Area of Encounter spells do not hit your pet.

You may not get another charm off if you do lose your charm (which can happen). I had to hit escape one time, and the other time my pet turned on me, he killed me.

My charm lasts like 3 minutes at Master 1, so choose your pet right before a fight.

Actually not getting a mez earlier is my biggest grippe about troubs.

I dress defensively while doing this...but this is my solo grind w/ charm...(being that 70 spells have longer durations and better quality effects, I dont know how low of a level troubadour could repeat this)BUFFS/SONGS:Str/Sta Song (1), Defensive Song (2), Self-buff Agi/Int, or Haste for your new pet (3), Dove/Swan Song (4) fifth slot open for Charm (5)GETTING A PET:1. Look at your enviroment, whats your space, limits, roamers/adds...where do you flee...it can be a sloopy fight. Identify your target by understanding what their names mean....what type of class matches that name...ie "Goblin Prowler" = scout-type, "So-so Shadowspeaker" = Necro or SK...you get the point2. Pick a target that is likely to have high avoidance to start...your scout type or brawler/monk type mobs, this will reduce the chance of charm breaking by limiting the number of hits take by pet by its natural avoidance (less hits taken = less chance of hitting that 5% or 10% chance of breaking charm)3. Once charm is fired...now you have your agile-archtype pet/mob, your buffs are defensive so your new pet gains more def, more stats (harder to hit).STARTING A FIGHT:1. Pull with a low agro method...body pull or single arrow (or better yet new AA line arrow+agro debuff CA). You can't tell your pet to attack, but it is defensive of you...so once you pull and take a hit, it will attack your aggressor.2. Once this has happend, you turn off auto-attack, use no combat arts or spells and pop off all your agro reducers to pass agro to your pet.3. Once your pet has agro, debuff the mob with all debuffs (beware of dot/wis debuff if you need to mez later). Here again making it harder for your monster to hit your pet.4. Then go into a light dps combo...save snare, stuns, and mez for the occational break, hopefully it dies, all is well...IF CHARM BREAKS:1. Don't freak out, staying calm and knowing your spells timers/recasts help. The mob you were killing (not-charmed) is debuffed and weak...I choose to take hits from that one, while using all my crowd control methods on the broken-pet.2. This takes some practice and fast keyboard work, but figure out what combo you like of mez+snare+stun+charm (not in that order specificly)...you can cast charm on the move...so its possible to snare and kite while charming. First target to control would be your broken pet since he is likely full life and has no debuffs on him...you should want to re-charm him to finish off the debuffed mob or mez him and finish off the debuffed mob yourself.Thats about it...or at least that I can think of atm...and these fights go bad fast, I agree. One missed stun or mez means waiting for recast timers and taking hits while doing so (if their solo, meh...if herioc you might not have time to evac).

I tend to use it as emergency crowd control. If healers are oop, I will drop the last song to get conc to charm a remaining mob until power comes back. I don't use it regularly, though, but then I don't solo.

If you want to know what real charming is, go to Bonemire and charm a Corpse Candle. Then target the next mob and attack it and watch your pet nuke from 4k to 7k.

Bria's Entrancing Sonnet is level 20, not 24.I can cast Bria's Charming Sonnet (level 34 charm) on the run. This is incredibly handy, especially if you snare. The last time I tried the level 20 charm, it interrupted when I tried to move.I tried pet tanking, but charm breaks too often for that to be reliable. It can be very effective if you get lucky, and the 10% rule doesn't kick in. Last night I killed Gurk Strongarm with a charmed level 44 roekillik assassin tanking for me.By the way, the Disturbance world quest is great for spawning a nice agile Scout ratonga you can use as a charm pet. In Zek, that level 44 roekillik will absolutely trash any solo encounter you face and do a great job on green heroics. One other tip: do not have your magic/mental resist buff up while charming. Your pet gets that after you charm him.
Message Edited by Jooneau on 03-21-200603:15 PM
