Ummm... I'm partial to troubador... but mostly that's because I play one and enjoy it.

Dirge!......I'm partial because I play one <ggg>

Just go look at the spell line up and see which style suits you better. If I had to choose all over again I don't think I would have any significant preference one over the other to be honest.

Make a Fury, you don't have a healer yet and they're the most offesnvie-oriented.

I have a 37 dirge and 38 troub... just never could make up my mind on a bard, and at this point I'd have to say, playstlyle-wise they are almost exactly the same. My dirge is more beneficial in melee heavy groups, troub in caster heavy groups, but for the most part, I configure the buffs I'm using to the group I happen to be in at the time, and end up playing them almost the exact same way.

Higher level bards might argue there are balance issues (then again they might not) but from what I can tell overall they are pretty well balanced against each other.

If you want to play more of a melee bard, play a dirge. If you want to play more of a caster bard, play a troub. And even in those respects there's not that much difference.

Dirge, because I play a troubador and would have selected a dirge if I had known they were going to turn troubs into caster buff bots

I enjoy my Troubador quite a bit. I like being able to buff more vs. debuffing. My buffs always land.

Having said that I have heard that Dirge's are better soloers if that is something you want.

Oh and no matter what you may hear, when used correctly Charm rocks! :smileyvery-happy:

Dirges have more song buffs that more directly affect themselves, like increased agility on top of the single target buff, the procing ability for melee skills, and the raised combat skills. This makes them a little more solo friendly for those times when getting a group is difficult. On top of that they debuff mobs better making them a nice addition to solo and group play, especially groups consisting of mostly melee.

Troubadors on the other hand have the majority of Caster friendly songs, including a song that causes proc damage when spells hit the enemy. They are more useful in groups due to the variety they add, but they lack a group agility buff which also hurts them solo. Troubadors cant debuff nearly as well as dirge can, and most the buffs they can cast dont help them much in solo play (to give you an idea I pretty much always keep defense, power regen, health regen, and haste up along with my self buff for Int and Agi while solo). Troubdor damage is slightly hampered by the fact they are more defense oriented too.

So to give you a summary: Dirges are good groupers with a lot of melee classes and decent soloers, Troubadors are excellent with a lot of priest and mage types, decent defensively, but not that great at soloing.
