View Full Version : Confused on why someone would buff intelligence

OK, so I read in some spots that people are buffing their intelligence as a brigand. It's easy for us to self cap str so they move to intelligence as the secondary stat.

I did some testing and found some interesting information.

Procs from wizards, warlocks, conjurors, dirges, etc... damage depends on the CASTER'S (the wizard) intelligence and is not dependant on yours. If your int is cap or 16 it does the same amount of damage.

Poisons seem to be a constant number. The poison damage is the poison damage no matter what your int is so buffing your int doesn't raise the damage.

All the dots tied into our CAs are trauma dots and are dependant on your str and not your int.

So after looking at all this, there is absolutely no bonus for having a high int. So furies only benefit 1 dps in the group (the one who gets agitate) and that's it. Well and maybe if someone isn't at str cap they can benefit from the str/agi buff.

I also have no idea why someone would buff their intelligence as a brigand. If I'm wrong in some way, please enlighten me.

Intel does make a difference with poison procs. I cant speak for other buff (such as those from wizzy and the like), but you can clearly see that as you add more int, you're poisons will deal more damage.

I tested it duoing with my wife's necro. With her Int buff Master's Caustic Poison did 455 damage...without her int buff it did....455 It seems to me it does not affect damage, maybe proc chance but I doubt it. show me some other hard evidence to prove otherwise if I am wrong plz.

When raiding I usually have a fury in my group and since all the mages in the group are obviously INT capped I get the Fury INT+power buff and it does wonder for my grand master's caustic poison. I just wait with applying the poison until after I have maximum INT, if I do it before the damage number won't change as my intelligence goes higher. It's the same with my off stance too, I'm not capped on strength selfbuffed so when I get strength buffs I need to reapply my off stance for it to show the new damage number. I don't know if it is a UI bug or if it is actually a game mechanic bug.

it procs more? that doesn't sound right...anyway, if you're looking for a poison damage change, as mentioned above, you have to check the vials that you don't have applied. once you apply it, the number may be static. i know it used to change the damage of any non-physical. maybe not anymore, which would be sad.

There is nothing that affects Proc chance. Proc percentage on poisons, skills and all items is set in stone and nothing changes it.

Int however does raise Poison damage. I can confirm it, as my GM Caustic Poison goes up to ~650 or so when our Fury buffs me. It normally is at ~500 when I'm unbuffed. The DOT and Vitality/Mental Breach poisons also go up in potency.

Any magical procs on your weapons/equipment also increase their damage based on your Int.

So maybe I just wasn't buffing int enough to see a difference? I was checking with 39 and then with 119 intelligence to see the difference. I'll try to check with a fury and wizard int buff to see if there's a difference. It might take more then 80 intelligence to see the difference in damage.

Even if it does change but it takes a full 100 int to make a difference, I still don't see a point in buffing int. 10% every 100 int .... so with a wizard buff and fury you're going to get about 170 more so it will add 10% onto your poison's damage. That's not much.

If someone else can check this out before that would be nice too I'm not raiding until thursday to check the numbers.

Message Edited by mikemcmodmike on 09-19-2006 08:08 AM

You can see the difference this way:

1) Examine poison in inventory

2) Get int buff

3) examine poison in inventory again

You can't see it after you have used it, but it shows up for sure in inventory.

Just checked:60 INT, GM Caustic does 572 dmg106 INT, GM Caustic does 597 dmgSo... something like if I increased my INT by 450 from 60 (to reach 510 INT), I'd add an additional 244 or so to each Caustic poison proc dmg, if the formula is linear. (to 816 dmg per proc up from 572) Theoretically.

Oh I see the mistake I made. I was scrolling over the poison damage to see the difference and wasn't examining them. So int does increase poison damage. Since there's no way to examine procs, I wonder if they're affected or not? Hard to say.

Unless it's been changed recently, procs will be based on the target's int. Used to be that way at least.

For most brigands of the DPS, non tanking variety Int is #2 or 3 on the list of stats. Agility is nice for a larger power pool, but some brigs use mental breach all day long, so agility doesn't really matter. Stamina and HP are rarely an issue for the majority of us non-tanking brigs. Also, as long as we can maintain AR resists are not a factor. So in that case, adding a little DPS from more int is prefered to adding to less used stats.

The mini-tank brigand Int is probably last, with str, sta and wis all being very important. Str to keep aggro though DPS, Sta for HP wich are woefully low for a tank and Wis for resists that now come into play since you will definately get hit and AR is no longer a factor.

I do know for example in our guild during raids all of our scout classes that use the poisens have a ritual after death and such it is quite funny really they all put on caster gear to buff their int to cap... why because the poisen hits harder... after they are buffed int wise they then apply the poisen thus locking in the damage it does based upon the int at the time of application. After this ritual is complete they change their gear to the approiate gear needed for the mob yada yada.. Does it make sense is it logical to be done this way? im not really sure on this but it does seem that it is just using an understanding of the mechanics of the game i.e. the stat checks that an item does, then changing ur attire to get the most from that stat increase/damage increase just makes sense.. BUT MY GOD it takes forever waiting for them.. i have a baby brigand which btw i love and will prolly grind to level and raid.

I'm still failing to see the point of keeping int high just for poison damage. If I'm using caustic/hemo, I do what MisterE described - put on int gear, apply the poison, and switch back to regular gear. The poison keeps its int-buffed damage number (on the buff tooltip and in combat), even though my actual int drops. Seems to me that if you're doing it solely for extra poison damage, you'd be better off focusing on melee stats for your normal gear, and just keeping a second int-heavy set of gear to switch to right before you apply a poison buff.

If I'm missing something obvious here, feel free to call me an idiot. I usually run mental breach, so I don't even pay much attention to the int thing (int ups the power drain on the mob, but not how much power I get back... meh).

Well here's my thinking on it. I noticed that when you scroll over the poison damage in your inventory the damage doesn't change as you change your intelligence, you have to examine it. So maybe the poison not changing amount after you use it with intelligence changes is just a display error. Maybe it is changing it's just not displaying the change. Just in case I go for int gear and keep it on during raids.

About using mental breech. I was a firm believer in mental breech up until maybe 3 weeks back. I switched to grand master caustic and noticed a large jump in dps. My dps went up from 1100 dps to 1200 dps zonewide. There are the occasional fights where I might use MB though... like while doing harla... but for the most part grandmaster caustic is a lot better.

i was under the impression that the Proc from our offensive stance was also based off of our int score?

I think that's a trauma proc so str affects it's damage, not int.

Yes, the off stance damage proc is affected by Strength just like the wisdom AA line ability(lunge reversal?).

ah nice to know, i just checked it this morning and ur right, it goes off str (which of course is capped ) my offensive stance proc is like 161 dmg with 515 str self buffed, anyone seen it higher (indicating something other then str goes into it)?
