Hey there Brigands,I just dinged into my 20's and having a bit of trouble figuring out exactly what Ruse does. I think I understand it but I haven't seen it actually do any dmg yet. So I hit Ruse, which makes me pretend to die, and at that point it increases my hate to the mob and if that mob turns and hits me while I'm down there, it receives my suprise attack.Am I right so far?Heres the question, I've been trying to use this on some rhino's. But I have yet to see it do any damage. Is that because Rhino's aren't using "melee weapons" as the CA specifies? Which is fine by me cause I'm on a pvp server.Just looking for advice thanks,

Well, a couple of things - first, you have to have aggro. The "you jump 2 spots on the hate list" does not work, so ifyou don't have aggro, and you Ruse, you're just going to lay on the ground and curse at your monitor.

Also, be sure that you only Ruse critters that can hit you. I don't know the level difference between you and the Rhinos, but if they're grey, you may be laying there a while before they can land a hit on you (same idea with greens, they miss a lot so Ruse may not be your best choice).

Otherwise, you know that it's going to work if you see the critter you're killing feign death too. If the critter just keeps fighting it hasn't worked because you don't have aggro, or aggro has switched.

Hope that helps!

as soon as you receive a melee attack that does some damage it triggers...you can still parry when you are down waiting to jump

Part of the problem is as Jeff says, you can still dodge/parry while prone, and monsters still miss, too.The other problem, as Kriki says, is that the +2 hate positions doesn't do anything (in some cases you can actually see the IMMUNE message when you try this) so you can lose aggro instantly within a group. Also, using this to gain hate, get hit, then lose it (which I think is Lockeye's vision of how the CA is supposed to work) is just an exercise in frustration.Short version: This CA is only reliable if you're in offensive stance, have used despairing thrust (or similar in the line) and are solo'ing. Beyond that, you're better off using something else, because the odds are, it won't work. For the record, fighting level 70 heroics in a group, I have laid prone for the entire 10 seconds (with aggro focus on ME) while the creature miss, miss miss's me with -250 defense. Riiiiiight. Pretty sure that's not working right. This was with a guild group while testing CA's after LU25, so a contrived situation to be sure, but still it demonstrates how even in a controlled environment, it's not working right. (or if it's supposed to 'work' this way, i'll be damned if I can figure out what value it offers)
Message Edited by agra on 07-27-2006 07:27 AM

Yeah the Ruse line of spells is very much a solo line of spells, however, when used properly they're very useful. As mentioned above the hate gain does not work as it should, but if you solo regularly it's definitely worth upgrading.

But you do have to be mindful of who you're using it against and how often they hit you; it has happened where I have used the skill and still not been hit by the mob and thus effectively wasted 10 seconds of my time. But hey, as long as i'm not dying, i'm not complaining :smileytongue:

Heh I've actually used it while tanking for a group just because I knew it was 10 seconds of not getting hit perfect for tanking as long as no one steals the agro.

Thanks for the info guys. I've now used it successfully a few times, but it's certainly not one of my main attacks due to it's "irregularities".One use that's seemed helpful, and i'm sure the later ruse's will be just as fun. In pvp (I'm on Venk with my brig), a nice suprise attack for 500+ is always beneficial. Since I'm only lvl 23, 500 dmg is half of a robe wearers life I believe I saw that the high end of the ruse line does over 4k dmg, wonder what that is in pvp.

Um any caster thats Meleeing you Deserves to be one shotted.... and Subterfuge does 1500-2200 ish dmg at lvl 69... that I have seen so far in PvP. It's not an I win button but it sure helps.

(for the first time ever since i started playing a brigand).... i was shocked. i did it about 20 more times... and it worked.... so, maybe you guys wanna go out and test this.... i think i'm gonna try again tonight and see if it was just a lucky night or what. but the hate positions did work, i did get attacked and the damage did go off.amazing? maybe.

I was grouping last nite and I would get aggro by just slashing/hacking away then hit the Ruse line. The mob just ignored me and turned back to the pet who was tanking at the time. This the normal behavior I have with that CA line unless I am solo. So, to me it is still broken.

While not MT i can gain agro after using my Double up chain then Ruse the mob who will 9 time out of 10 continue hitting me. Surprise attack fires and I immediately lose ago with hideaway. Like I said works 9 time outa 10.

When MT it works every time unless the mob is perma stunned for 10 seconds.

I must be the only guy that loves this ca

solo'ing this ca has no equal, especially when fighting multiple mobs (brigands true weakness.) Wait until you're on the last one or two mobs, spring this on them and you're guarenteed to get one of the mobs below 50%, sometimes one shot kill.

Grouped, I find this spell is great for WOW factor. Especially when you've got a tank that's slacking. Great way to get rid of annoying lower level adds that come with a boss mob or named.

things to take into account: I've always kept this spell at AD3 or better and my brig is geared twards max str

I love this CA as is. I think they should change the description to read as what it actually does now; ie doesn't effect hate at all. IMO, it's more fun to have to steal aggro, pop this spell, and then use your aggro reducer. There's more skill involved.Solo and MTing, it just works.

Oh, and sometimes I use our rescue CA (plead for mercy, etc) just to pop this in group combat.

Message Edited by quasigenx on 08-01-2006 11:38 PM

If I cast this at not the best time I hit it again and you get back up straight away. Is this the only way or is there others? On my necro I use the stand/sit key to get up from FD so guess I could map that key to the skill aswell.

Message Edited by Uanelven on 08-02-2006 07:09 AM

From my experience Ruse is really easy to spot if your looking for it, ive had ppl completely back off of me when they hear that (AaRggHH!) noise which i find funny. When you get higher in lv and you get the Master Book, it take a nice chunk out of thier health. Comes in handy when you solo.

Anyways, for PvP the best time to use it would be in the beginning because if they are losing the battle they are going to run and when you use it, you be laying on the griound, by then they will be long gone, or to far away.

Message Edited by Dire Spyder on 08-04-2006 06:08 AM
