Can swashbucklers tank? And if they can would there dps be more or less then a monks when dpsing? Do they have good AE's attacks. Currently Im using a monk but the idea of a Swash tank intrigues me but i dont want to lose dps while tanking.

I regularly have a 3 man group consisting of a 70 Fury/70 Swash tank/70 ranger. All of us have a bit of raid gear or two, though my melee weaps leave something to be desired. I don't know what the swash tank's AAs are set to, but the difference between tanking swash and raid dps swash is all in the one-hand and shield vs dual, and the AA choices. So far we haven't found any mob or named in a dungeon that we can't take down with ease. Enmity in PoA went down in about 12 secs.As a ranger I have some AAs that lend themselves to tanking, but as my melee combat arts aren't as good as a swash's, a swash makes a far better tank, when properly outfitted. The swash does have about 1/3rd of his relic set, but not the legs or chest.I'm getting dangerously close to rambling, but I think if you want to make a swash tank, you're going to spend a long time collecting your AAs and being a DPSer, until you aquire proper tanking gear. It's certainly not handed to them.

A swash can tank but not nearly as well as a equally equiped equally well played fighter. If you want a tank that can do decent DPS roll a monk. If you want DPS that can tank in a pinch, roll a swash.

(note I have no idea how we are in PvP nor do I care)Swashies are a versatile class, we can tank in a pinch but not as good as a real tank, we can dps though not as good as an assassin etc. On multimob encounters we do shine though. We have debuffs that can help quite a bit though our debuffs are mainly single target. (poision debuffs can proc on multiple mobs). We have an agro transfer and a detaunt so agro isn't usually a problem. Our gruop stealth can be handy. And no we can't do it all, but we do a lot of things well. We don't do great ranged dps, we don't provide buffs for our group. we don't heal others (but can heal ourselves somewhat with our vitalilty leech poisions). We don't tank as well as a real tank.I do love my swashie though, I like the mix of opportunities it provides. I like that we can choose AAs to further enhance ourselves based on our playstyle. I like that I have fun be it solo, in a group or raiding and I feel usefull in all those situations.D

Message Edited by Drevva on 01-15-2007 01:56 PM

Message Edited by Drevva on 01-15-2007 01:57 PM

There are a lot of things Swashbucklers can't do. So somehow I don't beleive your statement.

Yeah swashies can tank, just not as good as fighters can but better than rangers, assassins, troubadors, and dirges can because swashies get a single target taunt and have an AA line that is directed towards improving tanking abilities. Brigands can tank better because of their self mit buff and they also have access to the same stamina AA line.

I don't know about the dps dif between a tanking swash and a tanking monk but I'd guess the monk would come out ahead because a swashbuckler loses dps by going down the stamina line. Swashies would likely do better burst damage but less overall than a similiarly equipped monk.

It's like asking if a paladin can work as a healer. Sure they can but not as well as a healer class can.

Swashies have 2 ae attacks and receive a limited ae proc buff at level 52.

I'm a STR/STA swash in a small guild with no high level plate tanks, so I tank all the time. We do perfectly well for ourselves, and can do a fair amount of EoF instances though Valdoon is a little too high. I'm in a mix of Legenday/MC/a few fabelds, and in defensive I have around 2900mit/8k avoidance/6800HP self-buffed. This can easily reach almost 10k fully buffed. We're no plate tanks but with a couple good healers you can go almost anywhere and still put out respectable DPS. I would still recommend recruiting a bruiser or plate tank though

My opinion is that we can tank just fine, hell many a time i have cleared HoF with me being the only tank.

It's not the same as having a dedicated tank and it might take a little more effort but it can be done.

Lera! Get a new freaking sig..Yes swashies can tank just fine In fact there is a certain (raid) mob in EoF that was custom made for swash tanks Yeah just make sure your group knows you don't have a rescue and only one taunt But your dps will be good enough to hold most mobs most of the time.

I'll add another "yep, swashies can tank". For my two cents, the stamina line was designed to help swashies be a better tank, in fact.

If the question had been "are swashies the best tank" then of course not.

I think of swashies as being a really good "light" tank. There are some mobs and zones/instances we might not stack up against very well. And having good gear is a must, imo, but that's probably true of any tank. Still, all in all, we do fine.

I would like to add that it's true, Lera does spend a great deal of time flirting in the 60-69 chat, as he favors "the younger lasses". :smileywink:

Message Edited by kellan123 on 01-19-2007 02:06 PM

I'm a swash tank (str/sta) and love it. I do just as much dps or more on raids as the other swash's. Self buff'd I have 51%mit,59.1%avoid, and just over 8300hp.

I am sort of trolling but i just made a swashy alt and since i am going to be soloing a lot decided to read up, as far as tanking goes, my main is a wizzy and i went down the sta line for him to be a battle mage for a few weeks, I have some decent raid gear, but even with that i was able to get close to 2600 mit wearing cloth and around 7400 avoidance along with a 500 point ward, this is self buffed, I tanked a lot in that set up was really fun, but being a raid wizzy dps is more improtant so i switched back.

But the sta line looks pretty ineresting for a swashy and i think it will be the first line i go down with my AAs as i get them. The swashy is a awesome class to play so far and i cant wait to get more CA lines opened up.

If you know you are going to be in a raid group where you will not recieve any outside DPS buffs then STA line rocks. Say you are a MT swash for transfer and only get dirge DPS. As a MT swash staying alive is very important. The extra avoidance, stats, resists, and mit found on many shields is going to make a huge difference surviving both direct hits and AoEs. If you regularly get significant DPS buffs than the Wisdom line with Coule, and riposte increaser will mean more DPS and better tanking abiliites than standard dual wielding.Either of those lines can be coupled with the defense bonus from the STR line to turn the swash into a more than capable tank.

If a str/sta swash is outparsing a str/wis swash, the str/sta knows his/her class better than the dps specced one.

Or the dps specced one loves to slack.
